Abstract: This invention loads tape into cassettes which have a zigzag shaped tape track. Positioning pins, which are located apart from the cassette's guide pins, shape the tape to conform to the cassette's zigzag pattern. When the reels are lowered to the cassette for loading, the positioning pins load tape between the guide pins without striking or contacting the guide pins.
Abstract: An aperture plate for an ink jet head is formed by micro electrical discharge machining one surface of the plate to form a dimple-like recess with a relatively wide flat base. An aperture is then formed through the plate in the region of the dimple, as by micro electrical discharge machining. In one method of the invention, recesses are formed in two plates which are then mounted to the body of an ink jet head. A third plate with a formed third aperture is then mounted to the body such that the first, second and third plates overly one another and the third aperture is aligned with the recesses. Apertures of a smaller cross-section than the third aperture are then formed in the first two plates by drilling through the third aperture. The aperture through the first plate is then enlarged.

Abstract: A self-lubricating track-roller bearing and the method of manufacturing the same that includes such a bearing with an inner race ring having a liner of self-lubricating material bonded to the outer surface of the inner race ring which is manufactured by the use of such a liner having self-lubricating material on one side and adhesive on the other side, with the latter side applied to such inner ring outer surface, positioning such inner ring with the liner thereon and a transparent heat shrinkable tubing assembly fixture together in a concentric relation so that upon the application of heat to said fixture it shrinks into a circumferential contact with the said liner to exert a force as the shrinking occurs to press said liner and said adhesive thereon against said outer surface to bond the latter thereto and thereby compress the thickness of said self-lubricating material, with said heat-shrunken tubing fixture maintaining said liner in position during additional heating to cure said adhesive, then removing
Abstract: A bladed rotor assembly for a turbomachine includes a hub having a circumferential blade retaining groove and a plurality of blades which have rhombic shaped platforms. The blade retaining groove is continuous and the blades are loaded into the groove by inserting them with the generally axially directed faces of the platforms directed circumferentially. Each blade is then turned to its final operating position when the axially directed faces are axially directed and then further turned to reduce the amount of room the blade platform takes up in the circumferential direction to allow enough room for all the blades to be loaded. After all the blades are in the groove they are all turned finally to their operating positions and locked in place. A method for assembling a turbomachine rotor assembly is disclosed, also.
Abstract: An aluminum header tube having a plurality of integral and regularly spaced lateral extensions is formed according to a method which includes the steps of forming stubs for the extensions, inserting a tool through each stub and into the interior of the header tube, sizing each stub to reduce its inside and outside diameter and, while maintaining the clamp, withdrawing the tool through the stub to cause metal to flow outwardly, thus raising or lengthening the stub to the desired degree.
Abstract: A system for securing a measurement-while-drilling (MWD) instrument in a generally centralized position within a protective drill collar. The system includes a pressure responsive slidable contact pad member in combination with a plurality of fixed contact pad members. As the instrument is subjected to an increase in pressure, above atmospheric, a slidable contact pad member moves longitudinally along an inclined angle face of a base member into contact with the inner wall of the drill collar to thereby centralize and secure the instrument within the drill collar.
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a rotor (70) for use in an air motor. A shaft (10) is machined to have bearing surfaces (16 and 18) and adjacent ends (12 and 14), respectively. A working surface (20) with helix grooves (22, 24 and 26) is machined into the shaft (10). A locking surface (34) is machined into the shaft between the working surface (20) and end (14). A ring (36) is machined with helix grooves (38, 40 and 42) on its periphery and an inner diameter (44). The inner diameter has a diameter less than the locking surface (34) but greater than the bearing surface (18). The ring (36) is placed on bearing surface (18) of shaft (10). The shaft (10) with ring (36) on bearing surface (18) is placed in a fixture (50) and a tension force is applied to ends (12) and 14 ). The tension force causes the shaft (10) to axially expand and radially contract.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for forming intruded sleeves in extrudable metal tubing thereby to receive branch tubes which are brazed in place. The apparatus comprises a split mandrel and a punch which drives a punch head through the tube wall section and into a pocket in the upper section of the mandrel to form the intruded sleeve structure. Removal of the mandrel is accomplished by removing a lower section, dropping the upper section off of the intruded sleeves, and thereafter removing the upper section.
Abstract: A hydraulic actuator (26) for removing a plug (14) from a tube (12) including tube gripping means (28, 32), the actuator having a double piston arrangement (38, 52), which when energized quickly and efficiently first causes the gripping means to positively grip the plug, and then thereafter remove the plug from the tube, all in one continuous motion.
Abstract: An improved valve bridge assembly and improved method of manufacturing the same, both new and rebuilt, are disclosed. The valve bridge is of the type that actuates the exhaust valves in larger internal combustion engines, such as locomotive diesel engines, and that has oversized lash adjuster sockets due to wear. Abstract: A silencer comprising a cylindrical casing assembled from two half-cylindrical shell members is produced by placing in one of the shell members a row of modular channel blocks and then completing the silencer by mounting the other shell member over the row of blocks. The modular blocks are selected from a multi store holding groups of blocks of generally uniform outer shapes, but prefabricated with mutually different inner shapes such that the different blocks, each one or each pair thereof, show specific characteristics with respect to the throttling and/or sound damping capacity, whereby effective silencers for different engines are easy and cheap to manufacture, even with the use of non-corroding materials.
