Abstract: A system and method for antibiotic susceptibility testing efficiently determines whether bacteria are alive or have been killed by antibiotic treatment. The antibiotic susceptibility testing device includes at least one reservoir into which a bacteria solution is introduced and a microfluidic channel connected to the reservoir, wherein the cross-sectional size of the microfluidic channel is selected to be comparable to the size of the bacterium to be tested. Furthermore, the electrical resistance or voltage signal across the microchannel is monitored as bacteria swim into and out of the channel. Alternatively, a small population of bacteria can be immobilized in the microchannel. The resistance or voltage signal fluctuates when the bacteria are alive and moving in and out of the channel or wiggling on the microchannel walls. If the bacteria are dead, they have limited motility and the signal fluctuations are significantly smaller.

Abstract: Provided are a nanocomposite including a nano-drug delivery system; and a ginseng extract or a ginsenoside isolated therefrom, and a preparation method thereof, in which the nanocomposite may be used for the prevention or treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases. The metal nanocomposite of the present invention may be prepared in a uniform size without using an additional reducing agent or stabilizing agent in a significantly shortened time, as compared with known metal nanoparticles. Further, since the metal nanocomposite has high solubility in water and high targeting ability for cancer cells, it can be advantageously developed as drugs. Further, the metal nanocomposite exhibits high anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activities, and thus may be usefully applied to prevention or treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases.

Abstract: Thin film devices, e.g., multilayer thin film devices, that encapsulate cells for transplantation into a subject are provided. Also provided are methods of using and methods of preparing the subject devices. The thin film devices include a first porous polymer layer and a second porous polymer layer that define a lumen therebetween and encapsulate a population of cells within the lumen. The thin film devices can promote vascularization into the lumen of the device via the pores in the first polymer layer and/or second polymer layer; limit foreign body response to the device; limit ingress of cells, immunoglobulins, and cytokines into the lumen via the first and the second polymer layers; and release from the first polymer layer and/or the second polymer layer molecules secreted by the population of cells.
