  • Patent number: 4803865
Abstract: The stand-supported bending device for the axially slidable rolls of a rolling mill comprises at least one bending cylinder whose piston acts on a mount of a slidable roll provided with an intermediate piece guided tilt-free in a supporting block covering one or more of the pistons. The intermediate piece is provided with a mount facing planar pressing surface. Since the opposing pressing surface is located on the mount, e.g. on laterally extending engaging lugs of the mount, symmetric to the transverse central plane of a radial bearing of the mount, the bending force acts continuously on this mount in this central plane whose lateral relative position the mount of the axially slidable rolls may take relative to the bending device. The tilt-free guiding which absorbs the tilting torque or moment of the intermediate piece can be improved by a mechanical or hydraulic synchronizing device. Then the pistons are no longer exposed to transverse forces due to the axial sliding of rolls and/or their mounts.

  • Patent number: 4800742
Abstract: During operation of a rolling mill the roll gap and roll shape change, because of the influence of heat, bending of the working rolls or the roll mounting, wear and the like, and must be compensated and/or balanced to make a planar product, particularly a planar rolled sheet or strip. To compensate for these undesirable disadvantageous influences on the operation of the rolling mill frequent axial sliding of the rolls with respect to each other and/or positioning of the working rolls transverse to the plane of the rolled material is required. These undesirable influences are prevented in a particularly simple way and/or are compensated when the contours of the rolls in the initial state and/or unloaded state of the rolling mill are such that the sum of the roll body diameters at each relative axial position of the rolls varies axially from a constant value.

  • Patent number: 4796452
Abstract: A setting device for adjusting the position of a roll with respect to a mating roll, as in the press section of a paper machine, or the like. A roll trunnion or journal at the end of the roll is received in a bearing which is supported in a bearing housing that is axially outward of the roll. The outer part of the bearing is in turn supported to an actuator which is shiftable to move the roll transversely of its axis with respect to the mating roll. A base plate hydraulically supports and raises the actuator for the bearing housing. A guide plate supported to the base plate extends past the roll trunnion or journal. Linear motion guide elements for guiding the motion of the bearing housing under the influence of the actuator are provided. They are guide claws on the bearing housing which wrap around the guide plate and move along it. An additional actuator piston operates on the roll trunnion or journal to move it in the opposite direction from the actuator.

  • Patent number: 4787226
Abstract: A method of aligning the horizontal and vertical rolls of a beam mill stand. First the upper horizontal roll is brought to a datum position, and then the vertical rolls are brought into contact with the opposite flanks of upper horizontal roll, to establish datum positions for the vertical rolls. The vertical rolls are then withdrawn from their datum positions, and the lower horizontal roll is brought into contact with the upper horizontal roll to establish a datum position for the second horizontal roll. The vertical rolls are brought into contact with the flanks of the upper and lower horizontal rolls. The initial inter-roll spacing of the vertical rolls at first contact is compared with the inter-roll spacing of the vertical rolls at the second contact to determine if there is any axial misalignment of the horizontal work rolls.

  • Patent number: 4785654
Abstract: To protect a heat shield arrangement over a hot-rolling mill, at the entry end of the table contact members of large mass are suspended over the path of the hot material to form a height barrier for distorted material. The members are suspended displaceably from bars on a cantilevered support that leaves one side of the table open for the removal of scrapped material. The bars pass through contoured apertures in the members which permit the members to move in forwards and upwards so that when struck by the material they can lift and can also yield to the frictional force of the material travelling under them. The loading on the cantilevered support is thereby reduced. Reduction in peak loadings also result from mounting the members on an upwardly pivotable cantilever frame and by damping the return movements of the members and/or the frame.

  • Patent number: 4783983
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for continuously slitting amorphous ribbon into a strip without adversely affecting the unique electrical, mechanical and magnetic properties of the material. The method includes the steps of heating a localized zone to approximately the glass transformation temperature and substantially simultaneously indenting the ribbon. The combined heating and indenting force produces a clean, high quality cut edge along the strip. Preferably, the positive engaging force causing indentation is effective to plow softened material to form a crystallized ridge adjacent the cut edge. The ridge is easily removed by a rotating brush. The indenter roller preferably includes a substantially V-shaped peripheral edge to concentrate the heat and force against the ribbon. A control unit is employed to provide the optimum heat, force and speed of relative movement between the indenter and the ribbon.

  • Patent number: 4781052
Abstract: Actuator device for axially shifting rolls which can be powered rolls journaled by way of radial bearings in holding elements in a rolling mill frame, uses hydraulic cylinders. At the drive side, the journal portions of the working rolls are respectively stepped to provide a centering roll portion, onto which respectively, an axial bearing is mounted to be positively held in position. At the housing of this bearing is attached a hydraulic cylinder which carries out the adjustment/control operation. The respective locking after mounting a new roll, for example, is achieved by a spindle head which is slipped on and which transmits the motive power of a driving spindle by way of the locking function performed by this spindle.

  • Patent number: 4781051
Abstract: The rolling mill has two working rolls and at least two supporting rolls. At least both rolls of one roll pair are axially slidable opposing each other and each of the oppositely slidable rolls has a curved contour extending over its entire length which is convex over one longitudinal half segment and concave over the other longitudinal half segment. The contours of both rolls of these roll pairs complement each other continuously in one definite axial position. So that the occurence of increased load points and moreover as a result increased pressure at the contacting positions of the working rolls and the supporting rolls is prevented, the curved contour of the roll body at the free end of the concave longitudinal segment of the roll body extends to the body edges in an at least partially cylindrical longitudinal segment.

  • Patent number: 4781050
Abstract: A process and apparatus for producing increased reductions in strip material, particularly soft metal strip materials, are disclosed. The process and apparatus utilize a rolling mill having at least two offset work rolls driven at a peripheral speed ratio less than a desired gage reduction ratio but greater than zero and a mechanism for applying forward tension to the strip material. The desired gage reduction may be obtained using reduced separating force magnitudes and minimized tension force magnitudes. The rolling mill utilizes relatively small diameter work rolls without having to provide additional support structures other than the back-up rolls and frame roll supports to prevent roll bending in the rolling direction. Roll flattening is substantially eliminated resulting in improved gage control and strip flatness.
