  • Patent number: 4578979
Abstract: A method for producing a strip of material having a non-uniform cross section is carried out by passing a strip of material in the longitudinal direction through a first set of working rolls, at least one of which is provided with an annular slot intermediate the ends thereof so that a reducing force is applied only to those portions of the strip engaging said roll on opposite sides of the slot whereby the excess material flows toward that portion of the strip opposed to the slot to cause the strip to buckle outwardly into the slot. The strip is subsequently passed through a set of smooth rolls to flatten the buckled portion. This procedure is repeated any desired number of times with the width of the slot becoming progressively smaller. The strip may then be passed through one or more sets of finishing rolls and a heating and annealing operation can take place before each passage through a set of finishing rolls.

  • Patent number: 4577483
Abstract: A spur gear assembly for axially mounting and supporting an end of a feed screw for each carriage and is driven from the main drive, since these feed screws of each carriage are arranged coaxially along a line parallel to a passline of the pilger mill. This spur gear allows relative rotation of the feed screws in this gear assembly mounting and a similar mounting is provided for the other screws of the pair of screws for each carriage. A first gear unit connected to the main drive causes a reciprocation of the stand along with the two feed carriages, and a second gear unit including a shaft clutch assembly is selectively brought into engagement and disengagement with the spur gear assemblies and the first gear unit to impart rotation to the screws to separately and independently advance and return the feed carriages to their starting position while one of the feed carriages continues to advance the shell through the mill.

  • Patent number: 4574609
Abstract: A nut forming apparatus in which a pair of identical die assemblies are housed in a pair of diametrically opposed boxes in a rotary block and rearward movement of the die assembly relative to the rotary block at a first die station is precluded but rearward movement of that die assembly is allowed as it is moved to a second die station by rotary movement of the rotary block. A fixed back pierce pin, associated with each die assembly, is thus inoperative in response to a front forming blow struck by a punch positioned at the first die station but operates to back pierce the nut blank upon rearward movement of the die assembly in response to a front forming blow struck by a punch positioned at the second die station. A pair of cammingly interfaced cylindrical members associated with each die undergo relative rotation as the die assembly is moved by rotation of the rotary block between the first and second die stations to respectively preclude and allow rearward movement at that die assembly.

  • Patent number: 4570472
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for controlling lateral unstable movement and camber of a strip being rolled in which the lateral displacement and the camber magnitude of the strip being rolled are directly detected. The lateral unstable movement is controlled by changing the right and left roll gaps of the horizontal rolling mill while the camber of the strip is corrected by changing the path line through the vertical rolling mill. As a result, the lateral unstable movement of the strip can be prevented so that the rolling operation can be carried out in a stable manner. In addition, the quality of the rolled strip can be improved and the yield can be increased.

  • Patent number: 4566954
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for effecting slitting rolling on a steel sheet, wherein a wide steel sheet is slit in the breadthwise direction into a plurality of steel sheets having smaller width and the slit steel sheets are moved in the breadthwise direction to form and maintain a predetermined distance therebetween. The steel sheets are then rolled independently to have edge drops on both breadthwise ends thereof, and, thereafter, the slit steel sheets having edge drops are subjected to a plating step. According to the invention, it is possible to obtain plated steel sheet product of high quality by slitting rolling.

  • Patent number: 4561282
Abstract: A diminishing arm toggle linkage has the work site within the toggle geometry and thereby provides exponential force enhancement. In preferred embodiments the mode of operation shifts on demand from a light-load-pivoting mode to a heavy-load-rolling element mode thereby easing operation and reducing friction and wear so as to provide prolonged durability and continuing dimensional accuracy. When the toggle linkage is embodied in a crimping tool an optional anti-reversing ratchet assembly prevents the tool from opening during use until a crimp is completed.

  • Patent number: 4548063
Abstract: A metal rolling mill for reducing the thickness of a metal workpiece passed between a pair of opposed work rolls is controlled to maintain substantially constant tension in the workpiece on the entry side of the work rolls to thereby improve the uniformity of the workpiece gate at the mill output. Working in conjunction with a standard control for delivering the workpiece is a scheme for compensating for thickness variations in the workpiece at the entry side of the work rolls which variations would result in tension changes which would adversely affect output gage consistency.

  • Patent number: 4537056
Abstract: A rolling mill is disclosed wherein mill housings have an inverted U-shape forming windows that receive chocks for roll assemblies. The windows are open at the bottoms of the housings and chocks for the lower roll assembly have lugs that project into recesses formed in the lower portions of the housing post sections and rest against removable keys supported in slots that are generally parallel to the rotational axis of the roll assembly. A platform supports the rolling mill when processing workpieces. Pad surfaces on the platform engage the lower end faces of the housing post sections and anchors engage the housing post sections at the sides thereof which are opposite the housing windows to resist a component of the rolling load transferred by the keys to the housing post sections.
