Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting delay sensitive information (DSI) and non-delay sensitive information (NDSI) over a communication link where the NDSI is fragmented in an efficient and intelligent manner and the fragmentation is based on parameters of received DSI so as to reduce the likelihood of transmission conflicts between the DSI and the NDSI. DSI and NDSI are thus interleaved over the communication link in an efficient manner. Both the NDSI and the DSI are transmitted in accordance with a network layer protocol.

Abstract: Devices, softwares and methods for network telephony sense if a party that has been placed on hold is talking. If it does, transmitting on hold music or other characteristic sound is discontinued. Accordingly, the other party is not annoyed, such as in a conference call scenario.
Abstract: A method for providing supplementary services in a packet voice network. The method includes the steps of receiving a list of information elements from a sending station and then inserting the list into a call control message. The message is inserted in such a manner as to ensure that any supplementary services information included in the information elements is preserved. In addition locally significant messages are included in a globally significant message so any supplementary services information in the locally significant messages is preserved. After the supplementary services information is preserved, the messages are sent to a receiving station. A network device operable to provide this functionality is also discussed.
Abstract: The method enables a set of services to be maintained within a private communications network even in the event of the network becoming split. It uses emergency means providing dynamic accesses that are previously defined by the user of the network. The dynamic accesses serve to carry signaling signals. Calls are routed using a method of routing that is both static and predetermined, imposing a path that is predetermined before a fault occurs, thereby making it possible for the network to react more quickly once it detects faulty operation.
Abstract: An Internet communication technique is provided for making efficient use of available bandwidth between network points by analyzing responses to received requests for information items to identify multiple responses that include the same item and optionally that also have a common next hop address, and responding to the multiple requests with a combined packet addressed to multiple addresses. The combined packets include sufficient information from which to generate reliable unicast packets, that will ultimately be formed from the contents of the combined packet. The combined packet is received by a network router identified by a common next hop address, and a sequence of addresses are associated in sub-groups corresponding to common next hop addresses. A plurality of packets are generated based on the combined packet, each of which includes addresses that correspond to destinations that share a common next hop address. The plurality of packets are then sent to their corresponding next hop addresses.

Abstract: In the method and apparatus for transmitting data packets, a source device places identifiers in data packets being transmitted. The identifiers identify data packets that the source device considers properly received by a destination device or identify data packets that have had their transmission aborted by the source device. When the destination device receives data packets including these identifiers and the identifiers identify data packets that the destination device has yet to receive, the destination device will proceed as if the identified data packets have been re-sequenced.
Abstract: The invention relates to a multiplexing method used in a PDH network. Standard PCM signals are received in the network element, at least some of which are multiplexed on a time-division basis into the same outbound transmission frame, the capacity of the payload portion of the frame substantially corresponding to the capacity required by N PCM signals. In order that ATM cells may be transferred more advantageously than heretofore through an existing PDH network, the multiplexing is implemented as configurable in such a way that the total capacity of the payload portion cab be divided between at least two parts of variable capacity in such a way that each part can be allocated a desired portion of the total capacity of the payload portion in accordance with the current transmission requirement.
Abstract: The combination of narrowband applications with broadband transport may be enabled by implementing a hybrid switch capable of operating as a narrowband switch, a broadband switch, and/or a combination narrowband/broadband switch. The hybrid switch may be initially installed/activated as a narrowband switch in order to operate with a network of all or mostly all narrowband switches. Eventually, the hybrid switch may be used entirely as a broadband switching mechanism when operated with a network of all or mostly all broadband switches. In the interim, the hybrid switch may be operated in a narrowband or a broadband mode on a communication-by-communication basis, for example, depending on the capabilities of the node or nodes to be used in establishing a given communication. The hybrid switch may include both broadband (e.g., ATM) and narrowband (e.g., STM) switching components.

Abstract: In an apparatus, there are provided an IP transmitting and receiving unit for transmitting and receiving an IPv4 packet and an IPv6 packet; an IP header converting unit for performing a mutual conversion of the IPv4 packet and the IPv6 packet by an IP header conversion; a DNS substituting unit for receiving a domain information capturing request sent from an IPv4 terminal or an IPv6 terminal and substituting its process; an IPv4 address capturing unit for capturing an IPv4 address from a DHCP server; and an IP address conversion information holding unit for holding an IPv6 address of the IPv6 terminal and the IPv4 address captured by the IPv4 address capturing unit in correspondence to each other. Thus, a communication with the IPv4 terminal can be executed without preliminarily fixedly allocating the IPv4 address to the IPv6 terminal.
Abstract: A single instruction, multiple data (SIMD) architecture for controlling the processing of plurality of data streams in a digital subscriber line (DSL) system has a memory for storing the data from the channels, a processor operatively coupled with the memory for processing data from the data streams, and a controller for controlling the processor. Storing the data in the memory de-couples the operating rate of the processor and the operating rate of the data streams.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling OFDMA cellular networks is described. In one embodiment, the method comprises receiving channel characteristics and noise-plus-interference information measured at spatially distributed subscribers and assigning traffic channels for an orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA) network.
Abstract: In network for forming a VPN on a shared network and communicating via the VPN, a core network of the VPN is formed by an MPLS network, access networks for accessing the core network are formed by VLANs, and edge routers are provided between the MPLS network and VLANs for interfacing the MPLS network and the VLANs. A transmit-side edge router converts a packet, which enters from a VLAN, to an MPLS packet and transmits this MPLS packet to the MPLS network, A receive-side edge router converts the MPLS packet, which has been received from the MPLS network, to a VLAN packet and directs the VLAN packet to a VLAN that belongs to the same VPN as that of a VLAN on the transmit side.
Abstract: A method for inverse multiplexing of unmanaged traffic flows over a multi-star switch network, where the ingress process for each switch handles managed traffic for its switch first, then pulls a single unmanaged traffic packet off of the unmanaged traffic queue, and processes and transmits the packet. At the destination node unmanaged traffic packets received from the fabric output are acted upon by the Sequence-Checking Process to determine if the packet is in sequence. If the received packet is in sequence, the Sequence-Checking Process sends it on to the output queue. If the received packet is not in sequence, the packet is placed in a buffer. The Sequence Checking Process then checks the fabric output and the buffer by scanning for the next in-sequence packet.

Abstract: The digital data stream (e.g. ATM cell stream) replicating device features an input port for receiving a continuous digital data stream at an input transmission rate; a broadcast mechanism for replicating the input digital data stream N times; N output ports for transmitting each such replicated digital data stream through a separate output port at an output transmission rate at least equal to the input transmission rate; and a delay mechanism for introducing a relative delay for each said output digital data stream with respect to the input digital data stream such that the output streams are identical but out of phase with one another. Use of such a device enables a multi-port digital data communications device such as an ATM network switch to be tested using only one (expensive) performance test generator while still respecting the statistical multiplexing advantages of the multi-port digital data communications device.
