Patent number: 6785510Abstract: A method of relaying data between mobile stations in a cellular communications system is provided. The system comprises a number of mobile stations and base stations. Each base station makes synchronization transmissions within its area of covers, which define a broadcast control channel for the transmission of broadcast data from the base station to mobile stations within the area of coverage. The synchronization transmissions are received at mobile stations within the area of coverage, which extracts data defining the broadcast control channel, and at least one calling channel on which mobile stations can transmit probe data to one another. The probe data is used by the mobile stations to obtain connectivity information relating to the availability of other mobile stations. The synchronization transmissions also contain data which is used to define at least one traffic channel which is used by the mobile stations to relay message data between themselves.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2000Date of Patent: August 31, 2004Assignee: Salbu Resarch & Development (Proprietary) LimitedInventor: James David Larsen

Patent number: 6782280Abstract: Rapid text entry using a wireless telephone is facilitated by correlating at least some of the letters represented by a number key to a two-key combination, namely, the number key and an indicator key such as the star key (which, when depressed along with a number key, can indicate the second letter on the number key) and the pound key (which, when depressed with a number key, can indicate the third letter on the key). Thus, at most two key strokes are required to positively indicate any letter on a numbers-only keypad.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 2002Date of Patent: August 24, 2004Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventor: Kyle J. Patent number: 6775550Abstract: An upstream transceiver, coupled to an upstream end of a long haul, single digital subscriber loop of an extended range asymmetrical digital subscriber line communication system, ‘spoofs’ a (co-located) digital subscriber line access multiplexer to reduce its downstream data rate over a short haul loop to the upstream transceiver. The reduced downstream data rate is compatible with the data rate that can be supported by the long haul loop and also accommodates an auxiliary (64K) POTS channel thereover. The reduced data rate may be derived by preliminary signal quality measurements upon the long communication loop conducted between the upstream transceiver and a downstream transceiver coupled to a remote end of the long haul loop.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 2001Date of Patent: August 10, 2004Assignee: Adtran, Inc.Inventors: Thomas L. Patent number: 6763241Abstract: Disclosed is a system that uses GPS synchronization pulses in a communications system to provide synchronization of the transmission of data during assigned time slots. In addition, mobile units can calculate the distance from a base station based upon GPS coordinates that are provided by the GPS system. The distance of the mobile unit from the base station is then used to calculate the time required to transmit data from the mobile unit to the base station so that data from the mobile unit arrives at the base station during the assigned time slot for that particular mobile unit. Additionally, base station synchronization pulses are transmitted by the base station to the mobile units to empirically synchronize the internal bit clocks of the mobile units to insure proper sampling of data.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 2001Date of Patent: July 13, 2004Assignee: Varitek Industries, Inc.Inventors: John Peter Gous, Timothy J. Patent number: 6751480Abstract: A method for increasing the capacity of a communication network by assigning subscribers of the communication network to individual antennas of an antenna array and allowing the antenna array to convey information to the assigned subscribers under the control of a scheduling algorithm. Antennas—under the control of the scheduling algorithm—in the antenna array are thus able to convey information to different subscribers at different times. The scheduling algorithm determines when to convey information to an assigned subscriber based on channel condition information it receives from the subscribers. The scheduling algorithm also uses the channel condition information to assign certain subscribers to certain antennas.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 2000Date of Patent: June 15, 2004Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Achilles George Kogiantis, Ashok N. Patent number: 6748228Abstract: A cordless telephone includes a handset cordlessly linked to a base unit. The base unit includes a storage device for storing a security ID. A detection device detects a start of a charge. A first transmission device transmits the security ID to the handset. A generating device generates a new security ID which is different from the security ID. A second transmission device transmits the new security ID to the handset. A judging device judges whether a response corresponds to either the security ID transmitted by the first transmission device or the new security ID transmitted by the second transmission device has been received from the handset. A link device establishes a cordless link with the handset. An update device updates the security ID stored in the storage device. The new security ID is generated when response from the handset is not received within a predetermined time.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 2000Date of Patent: June 8, 2004Assignee: Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd.Inventors: Masahiro Izaki, Keisuke Nakaya

Patent number: 6745050Abstract: For multichannel multiuser detection in a wireless communication system such as a CDMA system, for a set of user spreading codes, coefficients to delay lines are adjusted and the delay line output processed to estimate a symbol. The symbol is estimated based on a space-time correlation for an antenna space delay time correlation. The estimated symbol is then remodulated and subtracted from the received antenna signal corresponding to other users of the wireless communication system. The adjusting and processing are iterated until the estimated symbols converge such that they correspond to a predetermined symbol decision criteria.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 2001Date of Patent: June 1, 2004Assignee: Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyInventors: Keith W. Patent number: 6738647Abstract: A mobile station having the capability of inserting data content into the dialed digits field of a Call Origination signal issues a Call Origination signal to the mobile switching center (“MSC”) servicing the cell in which the mobile station is located. In response to receiving the Call Origination signal, the MSC issues an Origination Request message to a visitor location register system (“VLR”). The MSC issues an Origination Request message rather than a Qualification Request message because of the prior setting of one or more appropriate call processing trigger(s) at the switch. The dialed digits field of the Origination Request message comprises data content from the dialed digits field of the Call Origination signal received by the MSC.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 2000Date of Patent: May 18, 2004Assignee: Numerex CorporationInventor: Charles M. Patent number: 6738626Abstract: In a wireless communication network, a system and method for transferring a wireless session context allows a subscriber access unit to transfer the session context from one base station to another base station depending on a loading factor which indicates the throughput load through each of the base stations. A subscriber access unit which is located in an overlapping wireless coverage area served by both base stations can transfer the session context such that it is served by the base station having the least throughput load. Subscriber access units in overlapping coverage areas will therefore tend to transfer session context to the least burdened base station processor. In this manner, performance is improved because subscriber access units within a wireless coverage area of multiple base station processors are transferred to the base station able to provide the maximum throughput.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 2000Date of Patent: May 18, 2004Assignee: Tantivy Communications, Inc.Inventors: Kevin L. Patent number: 6731906Abstract: The present system for determining the phase and amplitude of a radio occultation signal modifies the traditional Open Loop tracking process to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio, minimize the sampling rate, and also preserve the structure of the radio occultation signals. A radio occultation system includes a transmitter system, a receiver system, and a post-processing system. The receiver system receives the radio signal that is transmitted by the transmitter system through the earth's atmosphere, where it is occulted, and down converts the received radio occultation signal to generate a down converted signal based on a phase model that uses a refractivity climatology. The receiver system then low pass filters the down converted signal and samples the in-phase and quadrature components of the down converted and low pass filtered signal.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 2001Date of Patent: May 4, 2004Assignee: University Corporation for Atmospheric ResearchInventors: Sergey V.
