  • Patent number: 7076214
Abstract: A method is disclosed for determining whether to transmit from a first unit to a second unit, where the transmission is one of a first type and a second type. In the method, a signal from the second unit is received at the first unit, and the strength of the signal as received at the first unit is measured. A determination is made of whether the transmission is of the first type or the second type, and a first threshold is selected if the transmission is of the first type, or else a second threshold is selected if the transmission is of the second type. The measured signal strength is then compared to the selected threshold, and the transmission proceeds only if the measured signal strength exceeds the selected threshold.

  • Patent number: 7076263
Abstract: Techniques for controlling the transmit power for a number of data streams in a wireless multi-channel (e.g., MIMO) communication system. In one method, a number of received symbol streams are initially processed in accordance with a particular (e.g., CCMI, CCMI-SC, MMSE, or MMSE-SC) receiver processing technique to provide a number of detected data streams. The post-detection SNRs of the detected data streams are estimated, and each SNR that exceeds a setpoint is identified. This setpoint may correspond to (1) the SNR needed to achieve the maximum allowed spectral efficiency or (2) the target SNR needed to achieve a specified spectral efficiency. A new (or adjusted) transmit power for each detected data stream associated with a post-detection SNR that exceeds the setpoint is determined and used for the data stream. Different power control schemes are provided for different classes of receiver processing techniques with different characteristics.

  • Patent number: 7065371
Abstract: A novel and useful apparatus for and method of determining the channel order and channel estimate in a communications system. The present invention is suitable for use with a wide range of channels and is particularly useful in estimating wireless channels such as GSM and other types of cellular channels. A channel estimate is performed on the entire received training sequence. Those taps having an energy larger than the energy of a channel estimation error quantity are selected for the final channel estimation model. The estimation error is calculated by dividing the complete received training sequence into two different portions, wherein both portions are of equal size. A channel estimate is used to calculate the channel estimate of both portions which are then used to calculate the channel estimation error quantity.

  • Patent number: 7047016
Abstract: Techniques to schedule uplink data transmission for a number of terminals in a wireless communication system. In one method, a number of sets of terminals are formed for possible data transmission, with each set including a unique combination of terminals and corresponds to a hypothesis to be evaluated. The performance of each hypothesis is evaluated (e.g., based on channel response estimates for each terminal) and one of the evaluated hypotheses is selected based on the performance. The terminals in the selected hypothesis are scheduled for data transmission. A successive cancellation receiver processing scheme may be used to process the signals transmitted by the scheduled terminals. In this case, one or more orderings of the terminals in each set may be formed, with each terminal ordering corresponding to a sub-hypothesis to be evaluated. The performance of each sub-hypothesis is then evaluated and one of the sub-hypotheses is selected.
