  • Patent number: 8279567
Abstract: A circuit breaker for protecting a power line. The circuit breaker includes a control unit and a circuit breaking element disconnecting the power line from a power source. The control unit detects a fault on the power line, opens the circuit breaking element, which opening starts a disconnection time interval, injects a test signal into the power line, measures a response, determines an impedance of the power line from the response, analyses the impedance during the time interval based on comparing the impedance with a reference threshold, determines a permanent or a temporary fault based on the analysed impedance, re-closes the circuit breaking element after the time interval if the fault is temporary and keeps the circuit breaking element open after the time interval if the fault is permanent.

  • Patent number: 8279566
Abstract: An electrostatic discharge (ESD) clamp (41, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91), coupled across input-output (I/O) (22) and common (GND) (23) terminals of a protected semiconductor SC device or IC (24), comprises, an ESD transistor (ESDT) (25) with source-drain (26, 27) coupled between the GND (23) and I/O (22), a first resistor (30) coupled between gate (28) and source (26) and a second resistor (30) coupled between ESDT body (29) and source (26). Paralleling the resistors (30, 32) are control transistors (35, 35?) with gates (38, 38?) coupled to one or more bias supplies Vb, Vb?. The main power rail (Vdd) of the device or IC (24) is a convenient source for Vb, Vb?. When the Vdd is off during shipment, handling, equipment assembly, etc., the ESD trigger voltage Vt1 is low, thereby providing maximum ESD protection when ESD risk is high. When Vdd is energized, Vt1 rises to a value large enough to avoid interference with normal circuit operation but still protect from ESD events.

  • Patent number: 8218277
Abstract: A system for protecting metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) output drivers within an integrated circuit (IC) from an electrostatic discharge (ESD) includes a first MOSFET output driver and a second MOSFET output driver positioned within a common IC diffusion material. The system includes a contact ring coupled to the common IC diffusion material and arranged along an outer edge of a perimeter surrounding the MOSFET output drivers. A centroid of each MOSFET output driver is common with a centroid of the perimeter surrounding both MOSFET output drivers. Each MOSFET output driver has a value of substrate resistance (Rsub) that initiates bipolar snapback in the MOSFET output driver at which an ESD event occurs. The value of Rsub depends upon a composite distance from the centroid of each MOSFET output driver to the contact ring.

  • Patent number: 8184413
Abstract: A regulator for a switched mode power supply includes switching regulator logic, a counter and a switching transistor. The switching regulator logic is coupled to receive a feedback signal and to generate a switching signal in response. The feedback signal periodically cycles between a first state and a second state when the power supply operates normally. The counter is coupled to receive the feedback signal and an output of the counter indicates an auto-restart mode of the regulator in response to the feedback signal remaining in the first state for a predetermined count. The switching transistor is turned on and off in response to the switching signal when the output of the counter does not indicate the auto-restart mode and is disabled when the output of the counter indicates the auto-restart mode.

Abstract: Integrated circuit (20) comprising several different voltage rails (V5 to V1) and an on-chip ESD protection circuit. The ESD protection circuit comprises at least one group (21, 22, 23) of ESD clamp devices (C1-C4). The ESD clamp devices (C1-C4) are arranged in a ladder-configuration. • Patent number: 8159809
Abstract: A reconfigurable system is described that can optimize the performance of the system. Substrates can be detached, levitated, moved, dropped and reattached as desired by the use of Coulomb forces generate between Coulomb islands. Thus, a system using a first set of substrates for a given frequency range can be exchanged with a second set of substrates operable at a different frequency range by the use of Coulomb forces. Making this exchange in an RF system can improve the selectivity and decrease the power dissipation of the system. One of the exchanges can involve inductor to shift the frequency of oscillation, for example. A control unit can be used to control the movement and replacement of all substrates. The formation of minimal energy potentials of Coulomb forces are determined to move a substrate over an underlying substrate.
