  • Patent number: 6571106
Abstract: A digital system is provided with an interface circuit for interconnecting two modules in different clock domains. The interface circuit can selectively respond to a request signal from a remote source and immediately de-assert a ready signal in response to either a rising edge or a falling edge of the request signal asynchronously to a local clock signal. When an internal circuit connected to the interface circuit has completed a requested operation, the interface circuit asserts the ready signal. The ready signal is de-asserted and asserted in a glitchless manner so that the remote module can respond to the ready signal asynchronously to a remote clock signal.

  • Patent number: 6571084
Abstract: A method is disclosed for determining whether to transmit from a first unit to a second unit, where the transmission is one of a first type and a second type. In the method, a signal from the second unit is received at the first unit, and the strength of the signal as received at the first unit is measured. A determination is made of whether the transmission is of the first type or the second type, and a first threshold is selected if the transmission is of the first type, or else a second threshold is selected if the transmission is of the second type. The measured signal strength is then compared to the selected threshold, and the transmission proceeds only if the measured signal strength exceeds the selected threshold.

  • Patent number: 6571083
Abstract: An automatic simulcast correction method (300) for a selective call receiver (100) includes the steps of measuring a received signal (304) for a received signal strength indication measurement and then determining if a protocol indicates a simulcast signal (310). If the received signal strength indication measurement is above a predefined threshold and the protocol indicates the simulcast signal, then the selective call receiver is optimized for simulcast delay spread distortion (312). If the received signal strength indication measurement is below a predefined threshold or the protocol does not indicate the simulcast signal, then the selective call receiver is optimized for static sensitivity (314).

  • Patent number: 6567645
Abstract: A method for operating a mobile satellite telecommunications system has steps of (a) providing a user terminal that is operable to simultaneously receive a communication signal from a gateway via a plurality of satellites; and, (b) at the gateway, selectively transmitting the communication to one satellite or a plurality of satellites each having a coverage area that includes a current location of the user terminal. The step of selectively transmitting includes a step of considering a plurality of factors, including a current reception state of the user terminal, a current state of satellite power of at least one of the plurality of satellites, and a predicted required state of satellite power of the at least one satellite. The current reception state of the user terminal is indicated by a received signal quality indicator, which in the preferred embodiment is expressed as the Frame Error Rate (FER).

  • Patent number: 6564048
Abstract: In a radio communication system, efficient information provision services obtained, where various information is provided to mobile communication terminal devices separately from call services, update information on information to be provided is transmitted from a base station unit, and a mobile communication terminal device receives the update information and then receives the desired information upon confirming that the desired information has been updated. Consequently, due to the ability to easily determine whether or not the information to be provided has been updated, the mobile communication terminal device need not receive all the information or connect to an information service center, but can efficiently use the information provision services.

  • Patent number: 6564066
Abstract: Each communication unit (112A through 112F) and talkgroup in a communication system (100) is assigned a priority at each site (106, 108, and 110) in the system. As communication units (112A through 112F) request resources, contention among requesters at a site is resolved by the priority of requesters at the site. System-wide resources are allocated equitably based on the geographical location of the communication unit using site-based priority.

  • Patent number: 6564036
Abstract: A method and system for providing selective interference mitigation (or nulling) in an adaptive array system. A communication device, typically employing an adaptive array, determines an indication of signal reception quality for a first remote user terminal in communication with the communication device. The communication device provides a first mode of operation wherein a first amount of nulling with respect to at least one interfering source is generated by the communication device. In addition, the communication device provides a second mode of operation characterized by generating a second amount of nulling with respect to the at least one interfering source, wherein the second amount of nulling is relatively greater than the first amount of nulling. Based on the relative signal reception quality indication, the communication device selects one of the first and second modes of operation.

  • Patent number: 6564074
Abstract: In a wireless network containing battery powered stations, one station is designated as a control point (CP). Each of the remaining stations has two operating modes: an active mode in which it receives and transmits messages, and an inactive or sleep mode which incurs reduced power consumption. The Control Point periodically transmits a beacon signal, and each station switches to its active mode to receive at least some of these beacon signals. A beacon signal may indicate that data is available for transmission to a particular station (from another station), in which case that particular station then broadcasts a message to indicate that it is awake and can receive messages.

  • Patent number: 6560456
Abstract: The present invention discloses a system and a method for providing information to a communication device in response to a request for such service received from the communication device. The request may be in the form of a digits request trigger or short message service (SMS) origination message that is initiate from a wireless telephone. The digits request trigger and SMS origination request may be initiated when a user selects a menu option or it may be initiated using a microbrowser. The digits request trigger or SMS origination message is sent from the communication device to a wireless web information services gateway. The gateway retrieves the requested information from one or more sources. The gateway then forwards the retrieved information to the user via an SMS message or via a microbrowser message. The information may be formatted according to a preselected configuration that is stored in a user service information profile.

  • Patent number: 6560457
Abstract: The invention expedites the delivery of a call originating in a circuit-switched network to a mobile terminal camped on a packet-switched network. Information representing the location of the mobile terminal in the packet-switched network is provided to the circuit switched network. A call setup with the mobile terminal is initiated with reference to the previously received location information, frequently more expeditiously and using less resources. Location-based services are also provided by the circuit-switched network with access to such mobile terminal location information.

  • Patent number: 6560468
Abstract: A cellular telephone system, including a cellular telephone transceiver unit, an ear piece which receives the voice vibrations of a user, and a wireless linkage operatively connecting the ear piece to the cellular telephone transceiver unit, allows a user to be in a hands-free mode when using a cellular telephone. The cellular telephone transceiver unit includes a personal digital assistant and a pager with a vibration module. The ear piece generally uses a bone sensor along with an air sensor placed in the external auditory canal of the user to detect the voice vibrations of the user. Further, a speaker is included in the ear piece to allow the user to hear incoming data from the cellular telephone transceiver. The wireless linkage uses low power radio frequency waves to send and receive signals between the ear piece and the cellular telephone transceiver unit. Both the ear piece and the cellular telephone transceiver unit require power which is supplied by batteries.

  • Patent number: 6560448
Abstract: A wireless communication device including a radio frequency (RF) circuit, a ZIF transceiver and a baseband processor. The ZIF transceiver includes an RF mixer circuit that converts the RF signal to a baseband input signal, a summing junction that subtracts a DC offset from the baseband input signal to provide an adjusted baseband input signal, and a baseband amplifier that receives the adjusted baseband input signal and that asserts an amplified input signal based on a gain adjust signal. The baseband processor includes gain control logic, DC control logic and a gain interface. The gain control logic receives the amplified input signal, estimates input signal power and asserts the gain adjust signal in an attempt to keep the input signal power at a target power level. The DC control logic estimates an amount of DC in the amplified input signal and provides the DC offset in an attempt to reduce DC in the amplified input signal.
