  • Patent number: 5164047
Abstract: A method is provided for the removal of water from a web by hot-pressing while the web is in direct contact with a heated cylinder face. The web is passed, while being supported by a press fabric, through at least two separate press stages. The web is first passed into direct contact with the heated cylinder face and into an extended-nip press stage. At the beginning the extended-nip press stage, a press-glide belt is passed into contact with the press fabric, the press-glide belt is pressed by means of a press member in the extended-nip stage against the heated cylinder face. This press-glide belt is separated from the fabric and the web is passed to the next stage where the web is pressed against a cylinder face only by means of the tension of the press fabric. After this latter stage, the web is passed to an intensive roll-nip pressing stage, through a roll-nip which is formed between the hot cylinder and a hollow-faced press roll.

  • Patent number: 5158629
Abstract: A physicochemical process for refining metal surfaces which includes the steps of introducing metallic objects to be refined and a solution capable of reacting with the metal to produce a softer phosphate or oxalate conversion coating on the metal surface into a finishing unit for agitation. Agitation is carried out to produce movement among the metallic objects for conversion of the metallic surface by the solution. The mechanical and chemical action achieves a reduction in the surface roughness of the metallic objects. A burnishing step is carried out by agitating the metallic objects with a burnishing liquid to remove the conversion coating and to achieve a specular finish. The burnishing liquid contains 0.01 to 1.5 weight percent of a phosphate compound and 0.002 to 0.2 weight percent of an organic slip agent and is used at a pH of 8.5 to 10.5. The low organic content of the burnishing liquid produces a waste stream having a low oxygen demand for waste treatment facilities.

  • Patent number: 5152816
Abstract: A method of forming a tapered aperture at the end of a capillary tube bore. A gaseous etchant such as a fluorine-containing compound flows through the bore and emanates from the first end of the tube. That tube end is heated to create a longitudinal temperature gradient. The gaseous etchant reacts with the tube and enlarges that portion of the bore at the first end. The resultant tapered aperture has a surface smoothness and shape that greatly facilitates the insertion of optical fibers during the fabrication of optical energy transfer devices.

  • Patent number: 5149374
Abstract: An LB film forming device according to the present invention having a packing control device by which a barrier is moved under the control of the packing control device to compress a sample until the sample spreading over the surface of a subphase liquid provides a predetermined set surface pressure, the absorbance of the thus compressed sample is measured, and thereafter the barrier is moved under the control of the absorbance as desired so as to provide a predetermined set value of the absorbance. Such an LB film forming device may stably provide a film having predetermined film characteristics.

  • Patent number: 5147462
Abstract: Paint or the like coating is applied to a gap between an elongated strip article and an extended surface, such as a coating head. A variable load, such as provided by air cylinders, is continuously exerted on the extended surface during operation for urging the extended surface against the applied layer on the strip, so as to maintain a uniform metering gap between the extended surface and the coated strip surface. The extended surface has a sensor for repetitively determining metering gap. A computer monitors the sensor output and causes load-exerting air cylinders to vary their applied load, in order to urge the coating head toward or away from the back-up roll, so as to reduce difference between the sensed metering gap and a predetermined gap, thus producing a uniform coating film thickness on strip articles having non-uniform surface topography.

  • Patent number: 5145072
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a device for screening and treating pulp. In the invention, the pulp is screened in a screen into an accepted fraction and a rejected fraction, the rejected fraction being treated after the screening by removing water from it. In order to reduce the energy consumption of the refining process, the rejected pulp fraction is screened by means of a means (13) rotating rapidly in a reject space (12) of a screen (1) in such a manner that the rapidly rotating means (13) effects a radial flow of the fine-grained material contained in the rejected fraction outwards through a perforated wall (14) surrounding the rotating means (13) into a space (15, 15a) from where the fine-grained material is discharged.

  • Patent number: 5140937
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for forming a three-dimensional article with thermosetting material on the basis of a three-dimensional information on the article by means of an ink jet method. The material is jetted from at least one ink jet head to a stage and laminated thereon. The laminated material is supplied with heat by a heat source so that it is cured. In this process, a jetting direction of the material from the ink jet head to the stage and/or a jetting amount of the material jetted from the ink jet head is changed in accordance with the information by a control unit, thereby forming a solid article having a desired three-dimensional shape.

  • Patent number: 5141873
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the selective determination of the oncentration of a substance dissolved in a solvent by means of an osmosis cell. The osmosis cell according to the invention contains a substance not contained in the solution to be tested, which is either practically insoluble or is impermeable for the membrane. This substance reacts chemically with the substance permeating into the osmosis cell, with a product resulting from it in the cell or with a product resulting from the substance in the solution to be tested and permeating into the cell. Reaction products are thereby formed which produce a pressure in the osmosis cell, which is different from the osmotic pressure of the chemically converted portion of the substance. A pressure increase thereby occurs in the cell, from which the concentration of the substance in the solution to be tested can be determined on the basis of standard values.

  • Patent number: 5136974
Abstract: For filling the edge groove (26) of an insulating glass pane (1) of an arbitrarily designed outer contour with sealing compound, stored geometrical data of the outer contour of the insulating glass pane (1) are utilized for controlling the relative motion between the insulating glass pane (1) and the filling nozzle (4). The relative velocity of the relative motion between the insulating glass pane (1) and the filling nozzle (4) is varied in such a way that the desired extent of filling of the edge groove (26) remains constant even in case of a change in the depth of the edge groove and/or in case of fluctuating feeding rate of a sealing compound. Furthermore, the relative speed between the filling nozzle (4) and the insulating glass pane (1) is selected to be higher in the zone of linear or less strongly curved sections (6) of the edge groove (26) than in the zone of more strongly curved sections (5).
