  • Patent number: 4789937
Abstract: A shift control of an automatic transmission including a first transmission section and a second transmission section, which are capable of shifting automatically and independently of each other, and the first transmission section and the second transmission section are simultaneously or alternately shifted, to achieve multi-gear shifts, in which when shifting is to be achieved by shifting the first transmission section and the second transmission section in directions opposite to each other, and shifting is a down shift in the automatic transmission as a whole, such shifting is prohibited. The advantages of the multi-gear shifts are thus fully utilized to avoid high shift shocks.

  • Patent number: 4788650
Abstract: The average color, and excursions outside predetermined acceptable color limits, of non-solid-shade fabrics, such as denim, can be determined utilizing a filter colorimeter, an A/D convertor, and computer. A swatch of fabric having a length greater than its width is continuously moved past the colorimeter, and is continuously sampled at the rate of at least about 100 readings per second until the length of the entire swatch has been sampled and analog signals have been generated for all readings. Analog signals are continuously passed from the colorimeter to the A/D convertor, and from the convertor as digital signals to storage in the computer. After sampling is completed the stored digital signals are analyzed. The voltage of the electric light source of the colorimeter is monitored to calibrate the digital signals depending on the voltage to the light source.

  • Patent number: 4787044
Abstract: Engine speed is controlled during gear change by way of both fuel supply apparatus and exhaust brake so that engine speed is equal to the rotational speed of an input shaft of a transmission coupled via a clutch to the engine. When the engine speed is higher than the rotational speed of the transmission input shaft, exhaust braking is performed to quickly reduce the engine speed thereby establishing synchronization. Then the fuel supply apparatus is controlled to reduce the amount of fuel for maintaining the decreased engine speed. On the other hand, when the engine speed is lower than the rotational speed of said transmission input shaft, only the fuel supply apparatus is controlled to increase the fuel amount. Engine braking is performed only when the clutch is in disconnected state, and therefore, vehicle speed is not decelerated due to the engine braking.

Abstract: A system for detecting engine speed in a multicylinder internal combustion engine provided with at least two sets of camshafts which are adapted for separate operation of valves connected to the sets of camshafts. The time detected is that for allowing one of the camshafts to rotate for an angle which is equal to or substantially equal to (720/N).times.n, where N is the number of cylinders and n is the number of sets of camshafts. The engine speed is calculated from the detected time. • Patent number: 4775939
Abstract: A tilt steering mechanism, a telescopic steering mechanism and a seat attitude adjusting mechanism are controlled in their attitudes by an electric motor such that the respective attitudes are automatically set into a retreat attitude where the driver easily gets on and off a vehicle upon boarding/alighting, and into a driving attitude assumed before retreat upon the completion of boarding. Whether or not the driver is about to get on and off the vehicle is judged in accordance with the status of an ignition switch, status of a door switch, vehicle speed, status of a parking brake, shift lever position of a transmission, etc. A change speed of attitude is monitored during energization of the electric motor and, if the change speed is less than a predetermined value, this is judged as the presence of overload and the electric motor is stopped.

  • Patent number: 4763274
Abstract: A digital computer performs a complete eddy current analysis of the tubes of a steam generator from data input to generation of a final report. The computer extracts signatures generated by various structural features and tube defects from the data, breaks down composite signatures into their component parts and classifies each such signature by applying thereto a cascading set of experience based rules. Signatures classified as structural features are examined closely for the presence of colocated tube defects. A post processor correlates the location of the indication identified from the time based eddy current data with the known physical location of the structural features so that the position of the defects can be presented in terms of distances from fixed structures.

  • Patent number: 4757452
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for measuring the timing jitter of a tributary data stream that has been multiplexed into a higher-rate multiplex stream using pulse stuffing techniques. The required jitter measurement is carried out by monitoring the relevant stuffing control bits of the multiplex stream. In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises a first microprocessor for determining the tributary stuffing ratio from the stuffing control bits, and a second microprocessor operative to determine a current jitter signal value by using both the stuff information contained in the stuffing control bits, and the stuffing ratio determined by the first microprocessor. The second microprocessor carried out its task by updating a preceding jitter signal value by incrementing this value each time a stuff occurs while decreasing the jitter signal value at a rate dependent on the stuffing ratio. Preferred algorithms are disclosed for determining both the stuffing ratio and current jitter signal value.

  • Patent number: 4755953
Abstract: An improved ultrasonic inspection system is provided which allows ultrasonic inspection to be performed using either of two ultrasonic frequencies and which also provides improved system sensitivity and dynamic range. In operation, the system produces two signals, one an amplified receive transducer signal and the other an attenuated receive transducer signal. Each signal is converted into a logarithmic representation. The two logarithmic representations are selectively provided to a read-only memory, which operates to output a signal corresponding to the receive transducer signal. Means are also provided which allows the system to use either of two ultrasonic frequencies.

  • Patent number: 4751657
Abstract: Axial cracks in the rotor assembly of a variety of rotating machinery are detected while the rotor is being rotated, by sensing mechanical vibrations of the rotor at a location along the length thereof to produce a corresponding rotor vibration signal. A background vibration signal representing the vibration response at an earlier time is provided, as well as a monitor vibration signal representing the vibration response of the rotor at the time the monitor signal is obtained. A speed-dependent first harmonic difference signal is found by vectorially subtracting the first harmonic of the background vibration signal from the first harmonic of the monitor vibration signal.

  • Patent number: 4751650
Abstract: A method of controlling the fuel supply to an internal combustion engine in response to operating conditions thereof. First and second groups of basic fuel quantity values are set beforehand as a function of a first engine operation parameter including at least the engine rotational speed, the basic fuel quantity values of the second group being each larger than a corresponding one of those of the first group for the same first engine operation parameter value. When it is determined from a detected second engine operation parameter value indicative of engine load that the engine is operating in a predetermined high load condition, one basic fuel quantity value of the second group is selected that corresponds to a detected first engine operation parameter value, and corrected by a fuel increment based upon a detected engine temperature value and the detected second engine operation parameter value. A fuel quantity is set on the basis of the corrected one basic fuel quantity and supplied to the engine.
