  • Patent number: 6263553
Abstract: A machine tool has a cam shaft and indexing drive mechanism which is driven by a servomotor and is therefore adapted for operation within a wide range of operational parameters. An encoder mechanism provides feedback to the servo drive mechanism to effect operational control. The machine tool further comprises a variable frequency drive motor which operates the spindles of the machine tool independently of the cam shaft and indexing drive. A servo-operated threading mechanism is operable at one or more workstations of the machine tool to provide threading of parts manufactured thereby. A computer control system controls and monitors the entire operation of the machine tool.

  • Patent number: 6263571
Abstract: A method of gear design perfects design of gear teeth geometry (30) instead of limiting gear-tooth design to present cutter geometry and manufacturing methods. A pair of varied-diameter cutters (22, 29), such as hypoid cutters, have a geometric form that generates variable diameter toothed elements. Structures of hypoid or other varied-diameter cutters are achieved with a cutting tool (9) having a design cross-sectional shape of an idealized space between gear teeth on both of a pair of cutters. The cutter tool is rotated and reciprocated in shaping or machining relationship to other cutter blanks (18) or workpiece (10) in design rotation on cutter axes of a cutting-machine spindle (5). The cutter axes have variable heights above the cutter tool. Simultaneously with shaping or machine cutting either cutter blank, the angle of reciprocation and linear positioning of the cutter tool and height of center of the cutter axes are varied designedly.

  • Patent number: 6241435
Abstract: A method for automatically minimizing an undesirable motion of a workpiece during a machining operation, and a universal adaptive machining chatter control fixture that operates in accordance with the method. The method comprises the steps of mounting the workpiece to an active, supporting structure, and then machining the workpiece. During the step of machining, an undesirable motion of the workpiece is sensed in the supporting structure. Thereafter, a compensating motion is applied to the supporting structure for minimizing the undesirable motion of the workpiece. The chatter control fixture can be attached to various types of machine tool devices, without requiring that the machine tool devices be retrofitted, and operates to minimize undesirable motions of the workpiece independently of the machine tool devices.

  • Patent number: 6241645
Abstract: A magazine which retains tools within the working area of a machine tool has a storage port which is mounted to a base via a compliant mount which provides two degrees of rotational freedom, and two degrees of translational freedom. The mount enables the storage port to be brought into register with a chuck on the spindle of the machine as a result of mutual engagement between surfaces on the storage port and the chuck during a tool change operation. The tool is retained within the chuck by using hydraulic pressure chambers in the chuck to deform an interior wall of the chuck cavity, and thereby causing it to grip the sides of the tool. Such a retention mechanism requires a relatively small clearance of the tool within the chuck when the wall is underformed, thereby necessitating the compliantly mounted storage port and alignment surfaces.

  • Patent number: 6241437
Abstract: A hexapodal machining center comprising a fixed frame (1) and a support (2) which are interconnected via six struts (3) of an adjustable length. The connecting points (T1, T2, T3) of three struts on the support form a first working plane, whereas a further working plane is formed by the connecting points (T4, T5, T6) of the three further struts on the support. The frame connection points (G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, G6) of the struts are also arranged in two separate working planes. The connecting points of the two working planes of the support are superimposed such that the connecting lines of the superimposed pairs of connecting points (T1, T4; T2, T5; T3, T6) extend in parallel with each other. This allows a high degree of movability of the support in all of the six degrees of freedom. In particular, the movability in the three rotational degrees of freedom and the force receiving capacity of the support are optimized.

  • Patent number: 6238152
Abstract: A fixed first sleeve and a movable second sleeve are arranged in a center through hole of a main spindle. Balls at the rear end of the second sleeve engage a recessed slope of the first sleeve and a recessed slope of a draw bar, thereby amplifying the urging force of a spring for urging the draw bar upward. Balls at the distal end of the second sleeve hold and pull in the head of the pull stud with the amplified force. The pull stud has an axial through hole and a hole that connects with the through hole and opens sideways. Compressed air passes through these holes, thereby cleaning the respective taper surfaces and end faces of the main spindle and a tool shank. Switching means is used to close the hole that opens sideways, whereby a cutting fluid is allowed to flow through the axial through hole only.
