  • Patent number: 4915595
Abstract: A radial piston pump is provided with a plurality of valve/piston cartridges. Each cartridge includes the piston and at least one of the valves connecting the piston to the inlet and outlet passages of the pump. The bearings for the main rotor are pre-loaded using a threadedly adjustable end quill. Once adjusted, the end guill is held in location by a pin or the like. The rotor itself is provided with counterweights to balance the eccentric cam surface. These features allow construction of a pump housing which is substantially a single unit, rather than two pump halves. A significant reduction in the number of machined bores also is obtained.

  • Patent number: 4913625
Abstract: An automatic pump protection system is comprised of a plurality of sensors for measuring process parameters indicative of a loss of pump suction or of pump motor failure. Analysis of the parameters is performed by a microprocessor in order to determine whether conditions leading to a loss of pump suction or pump motor failure are present. The microprocessor then automatically initiates pump protective action in response to the foregoing analysis by tripping the pump or by providing an alternate suction source.

  • Patent number: 4892467
Abstract: A rolling rotor motor/compressor is provided with counterweights for mechanical balancing while permitting radial movement of the rotor/piston. This permits unloading of the compressor such as when there is a liquid slug. The rotor/piston and the counterweights are driven by diametrically opposed windings so that the rotor/piston does not drive the counterweights with attendant power/capacity reductions.

  • Patent number: 4881877
Abstract: A pressure-limiting valve coaxial with the drive shaft is installed in a multi-piston pump. The valve is biased by a compression spring to closed condition to prevent output flow from the pump into a pressure-collecting dome of the housing. The spring is supported for reaction against a gasket having a throttle bore leading directly for flow toward a return chamber wherein the end of the pump shaft is a radial wall. When pressure in the pressure-collecting dome reaches a certain value, it will open the pressure-limiting valve against spring bias to relieve pressure through the throttle bore back into the suction channels of the pump. However, the relief flow through the throttle bore causes heating of the oil, an effect which is an important purpose of the invention on pump start-up. Thus, by making the return flow of reduced viscosity due to heating, such oil impinging against the shaft of the pump does not cause a sudden shift of the shaft against the pump housing.

  • Patent number: 4881879
Abstract: A hermetically sealed rotary compressor is disclosed wherein gas compressed within a compression chamber defined by a cylinder block is discharged through respective discharge ports in the main and outboard bearings defining the ends of the cylinder. Mufflers are provided on the outside ends of the bearings into which the compressed gas is expanded. A constricting gas passageway extending through the bearings and the cylinder block provides a path for constricted flow of gas from one muffler to the other. The constricted gas expands upon entry into the other muffler, thereby providing a cooler recombined discharge gas for use in cooling oil in the oil sump and cooling the motor stator windings.

  • Patent number: 4880356
Abstract: In a wobble plate type compressor having a wobble plate that converts a rotational motion of a rotatable drive plate having a variable angle of inclination to a linear reciprocating motion of a piston, a method of controlling the wobble plate type compressor to control a displacement of the compressor by changing an angle of inclination of the wobble plate according to a pressure difference between a pressure in a crankcase chamber acting on one side of the piston and a suction pressure acting on the other side of the piston. A solenoid-operated control valve is disposed in a pressure control passage extending from a discharge chamber to the crankcase chamber. The control valve is opened and closed to control the above-mentioned pressure difference, thus controlling the angle of inclination of the wobble plate. An opening of the control valve is increased during a period in which the displacement of the compressor is to be reduced, according to a displacement rapid reduction command signal.
