  • Patent number: 8941500
Abstract: A computing device is described that can receive contextual information related to a user associated with the computing device. The contextual information may relate to at least one of a physiological condition of the user at a current time or a type of activity associated with the user at the current time. The computing device can select, based at least in part on the contextual information, a type of alert to output as an indication of notification data. The type of alert may include at least one of an electric stimulus type alert, a shape-memory alloy type alert, and a vibration type alert. Responsive to selecting the type of alert, the computing device can output an alert based on the notification data, the alert being of the selected type of alert.

  • Patent number: 8898316
Abstract: An enhanced collaboration system makes it possible for viewers of post-original video presentations to collaborate online with others who are viewing the same video presentation at the same time. A collaborate room controller establishes and maintains sets of online collaboration sessions for the post-original video presentation with each collaboration session being associated with a particular time slot in the presentation. Typically, a viewer is assigned to a collaboration session that is associated with the user's current view point; i.e., the presentation time slot the user is currently viewing. A graphical user interface conveys information about existing collaboration sessions to the user to assist the user in selecting an appropriate collaboration session.

  • Publication number: 20140340196
Abstract: A system is described for controlling a locking system restricting physical access (e.g. a door lock). The locking system is accessed (e.g., actuated and monitored) via dual communication path types used by a mobile wireless communication device. The locking system includes an electro-mechanical access control security device, and a receiving unit controlling the electro-mechanical access control security device. The receiving unit is paired with the mobile wireless communication device for receiving input from the mobile wireless device for activating the electro-mechanical access control security device using both low energy and high energy operating modes. The mobile wireless device is configured to access the locking system via both direct BLUETOOTH and indirect mobile wireless data network communications. Moreover, the operating range of the receiving unit is extended by connections to networked devices operating BLUETOOTH 4+LE at a high power-extended range mode through the use of an amplifier stage.

  • Patent number: 8856223
Abstract: A technique that reduces the possibility that a message received at a computer terminal during an instant messaging conversation will become accessible to unintended viewers. One embodiment is directed to an arrangement wherein a computer terminal at a first client work station is disposed to receive chat messages from a second client work station during an instant messaging conversation. An apparatus associated with the computer terminal for limiting access to the received chat messages includes a device for attaching a security identifier to each received chat message. A display device at the computer terminal generates a window that selectively provides a specified one of the chat messages in viewable form. A concealment device coupled to the display device is operable to make the specified chat message unviewable on the display device. A component connected to the concealment device activates the concealment device when a prespecified event occurs.

  • Publication number: 20140282233
Abstract: A computing device (CD) outputs a graphical user interface (GUI) for display at a display device (DD). The GUI includes a grouping of elements that includes an expandable element (EE) having a first size. While the DD displays a first or a last element of the grouping, the CD receives an indication of a gesture including a linear movement of an input point away from the first or last element, e.g., in a direction in which the EE is expandable, and outputs a modified GUI that includes the EE having a second size. Alternatively, the GUI includes multiple EEs having respective sizes. The CD receives an indication of a gesture including a linear movement of multiple input points across the DD, and, while the input points are located within a region of the DD that displays an EE, outputs a modified GUI that includes the EE having a different size.

  • Patent number: 8719719
Abstract: Aspects of this disclosure may be directed to one or more techniques for a mobile device to present a graphical user-interface with different graphical user-interface layouts. The mobile device may present the different graphical user-interface layouts based on whether the mobile device is resting or not resting against a surface. For example, the mobile device may present a graphical user-interface layout that is more conducive for user interface when the mobile device is not held against a surface. The mobile device may present another graphical user-interface layout that is more conducive for user interaction when the mobile device is held against a surface.

  • Publication number: 20140048303
Abstract: A magnetic wall cover system that includes an inner cover made at least partially of a ferrous material. The inner cover has an outer alignment surface. The magnetic wall cover system also has an outer cover that has an inner alignment surface. The outer cover is adapted to be removably mounted on the inner cover such that the inner alignment surface is in engaging relationship to the outer alignment surface when the outer cover is mounted over the inner cover. The magnetic wall cover system also includes at least one magnet disposed on the outer cover. The magnet is adapted to form a magnetic attraction between the magnet and the ferrous material of the inner cover.

  • Publication number: 20140033773
Abstract: The disclosure describes a locking system for a door with a mortise pocket. The locking system has a mortise case within the mortise pocket. The mortise case defines an alignment hole. The locking system also has a gear box with a worm gear that defines a notched passage that receives a lock knob shaft. A worm within the gear box is coupled to a motor that rotates the worm. The worm engages the worm gear such that the worm gear rotates when the worm rotates. A control board in the gear box is adapted to receive electronic signals and transmit them to the motor to cause the motor to rotate the worm. The gear box also has a worm gear hub that defines a keyed passage and a hub tab. The worm gear hub fits within the notched passage and the keyed passage receives the lock knob shaft. The worm gear also has two notches that the hub tab contacts individually when the gear hub rotates within the keyed passage.
