  • Patent number: 5978142
Abstract: Image display apparatus comprising projector means, a first modulator and a second modulator, the first and the second modulators being such as to modulate picture elements in an image whereby finite minimum image brightness above true black is reduced, and whereby the contrast range of the projected image is extended.

  • Patent number: 5865989
Abstract: A process for sweetening high mercaptan content gasoline or other liquid hydrocarbons is disclosed which utilizes aqueous caustic solution. A recycle stream is used to increase the conversion potential by reducing the relative mercaptan concentration of the untreated gasoline. Part of the treated gasoline effluent is recycled to the untreated feed. The treated gasoline has a low mercaptan concentration while the untreated gasoline is high in mercaptans. As the two streams combine, the feed to the unit becomes less concentrated in mercaptan compounds. In effect, the mercaptan concentration of the untreated gasoline has been diluted by the treated gasoline. Nitrogen inhibits the solubility of oxygen into gasoline. Nitrogen present in the recycle stream would create a system high in nitrogen and low in oxygen. By increasing the level of nitrogen, oxygen is limited in its ability to complete the sweetening reaction.

  • Patent number: 5807627
Abstract: An electroluminescent device has at least two active semiconductive conjugated polymer light emitting layers arranged between a cathode and an anode. The layers are arranged so that at least part of at least two layers lie in an emission zone of the device.

  • Patent number: 5747182
Abstract: In an electroluminescent device which comprises a layer of a semiconductive conjugated polymer between positive and negative charge carrier injecting electrodes, a barrier layer is arranged between the layer of semiconductive conjugated polymer and the charge carrier injecting layer for negative charge carriers. The barrier layer protects the layer of semiconductive conjugated polymer from for example mobile ions released by the reactive charge carrier injecting layer. The barrier layer can in some circumstances also itself be light-emissive.

  • Patent number: 5745674
Abstract: A method of moving records, stored on a recovery log, which are associated with units of work which have waited for a long time is described. Units of work which have waited for a long time, such as those which are in-doubt have their records copied from a recovery log to a secondary log. When the earliest-written record for this in-doubt unit of work has been copied, a new record called a fork record is written on to the recovery log which has two effects: to subtract the log records currently on the recovery log for this unit of work from the recovery log and to refer to the copied records written on the secondary log. The new record achieves this using two pointers, a pointer to point to the most-recently written record on the recovery log for this unit of work and a pointer to point to the most-recently written record on the secondary log for this unit of work.

  • Patent number: 5653914
Abstract: An electroluminescent device is provided incorporating an emissive layer comprising a processible polymer matrix such as poly(methylmethacrylate) and a chromophoric component such as an asymmetric stilbene or distyrylbenzene. The chromophoric component is blended with the polymer matrix or covalently attached thereto as a side chain and is selected to emit radiation in the region 400 nm to 500 nm when excited to luminesce.
