A slack preventing member integral with the discharge frame suppresses slack of the continuous label strip as the adhesive backed labels are peeled by the peeling member from the backing member of the continuous label strip.

Data D0 to D2, among gradation data D0 to D5, are written in a memory provided in each of the pixels. The pixel is driven by applying voltage to the pixel with a time density in response to the data D0 to D2 written in the memory and gradation signals P0 to P2. In the same frame where the data is written, the remaining data D3 to D5 of the gradation data are written in the memory. The pixel is driven by applying voltage to the pixel with a time density in response to the data D3 to D5 written in the memory and the gradation signals P0 to P2.

    Abstract: A thermal printer has an outer frame that rotatably supports a platen roller. An inner frame is detachably attachable to the outer frame and has assembled thereon a head support body, a thermal head supported by the head support body, and biasing springs for urging the head support body toward the platen roller to apply a pressing force between the thermal head and the platen roller. During a printing operation, heating elements of the thermal head are energized to perform printing on a paper sandwiched between the thermal head and the platen roller. The inner frame together with the head support body, the thermal head and the biasing springs are detachable as an assembled unit from the outer frame. This enables easy maintenance of the thermal printer, such as replacement of the thermal head, and shortening of the time for maintenance and a reduction in maintenance cost.

When producing an 8-level gray-scale display, a single frame (1f) is divided into a first time period T1 to apply two-level signals to a liquid crystal layer in accordance with gray-scale data and a second time period T2 to apply an H-level voltage to the liquid crystal layer in accordance with a threshold voltage of liquid crystal. The first time period T1 is further divided into 7 sub-fields (Sf1 to Sf7) in accordance with gray-scale characteristics of an electro-optical device. Either an H or L level is written in accordance with a gray level of each pixel every sub-field. Thus, the ratio of an on period or an off period of the pixel to the single time frame is controlled.
