  • Publication number: 20090049513
Abstract: A method and a system for controlling a virtual environment of a user, e.g., a child is provided. In the virtual environment, users are able to interact with other users using messages. Each message is made up of one or more items contained in a dictionary. Information is transmitted, e.g., by e mail, to an agent, e.g., a parent. The transmitted information is information that may be used to authorize the agent to control the virtual environment of the user. The virtual environment of the user is controlled by setting a level of interaction at which the user is permitted to interact with others. The messages may include pre-written messages and messages composed by a user using items contained in the dictionary. A message checker bars unsuitable combinations made up of items contained in the dictionary. Inappropriate language and personally identifiable information may be excluded from the contents of the messages.

  • Publication number: 20090031208
Abstract: A method for modifying a table to show cell and row details. In one embodiment, the method includes receiving a command to expand a row with multiple cells to disclose details or in another embodiment to expand a single cell of a row, shifting the cells positioned below the row downward and expanding the row. The row or individual cell is expanded by displaying a detail region that is contiguous to row and positioned below the row. The cells positioned below the expanded row are shifted downward to provide sufficient space for the detail region such that the detail region does not hide any portion of any of the cells positioned below the expanded row.

  • Patent number: 7480686
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing a shift operation on packed data elements having multiple values. One embodiment includes accessing the shift control signal of a first format from a memory. The shift control signal identifyies a first packed shift operation and whether the shift positions are byte positions or bit positions, and causes a processor to execute a set of control signals of a second format, thereby accessing the packed data, shifting the packed data by the number of shift positions according to the first packed shift operation, generating a first replacement data for one of the number of positions, and producing a shifted first packed data comprising the first replacement data.

  • Patent number: 7451167
Abstract: A storage server provides a set of client devices with access to a set of mass storage devices. The storage server receives requests from the client devices, each request representing a storage operation to be performed by the storage server on the set of mass storage devices. The storage server maintains a log of write requests received from the client devices, the log including a separate log entry for each of the write requests, and a separate checksum in each of the log entries. Each checksum is for use by a checksum algorithm in determining data integrity of the corresponding log entry. The checksum algorithm is selected, from among a number of selectable a checksum algorithms, based on one or more predetermined criteria, such as a desired balance between performance and checksum strength.

  • Publication number: 20080255930
Abstract: A targeted information and incentive distribution system that protects consumer privacy and analyzes individuals', including individual households' or individual groups, purchase histories obtained from several retailers and other providers of goods and/or services to determine targeted information and/or incentives to deliver to individuals. Purchase history and other relevant data for each individual user are accumulated at a computer that is under the control of that user and analyzed to determine which targeted information items and/or incentives to deliver to that individual user. Purchase history data in the exemplary embodiment is only maintained at the user's computer so as to increase the privacy for the user of this extensive purchase history data that was derived from multiple sources. Abridged purchase history data that does not contain information to identify the individual to which it pertains is uploaded for comprehensive analysis to develop future purchase incentive programs.

  • Publication number: 20080247408
Abstract: A method for broadcasting messages in an ad hoc wireless network having a tree-based architecture is provided. When a node receives a broadcast message for re-broadcasting to other nodes in the network, it builds a list of identifiers of other nodes in the network from which the node requires reception of a broadcast message as an implicit acknowledgment that said other nodes in the network have received said broadcast message. The node builds this implicit acknowledgment list based on stored data pertaining to an existing tree-based topology of the network. After this list is built, the node re-broadcasts the broadcast message. Each node in the network executes this broadcasting protocol and in so doing a broadcast message quickly and efficiently propagates through the network with minimal redundancy and impact on the topology of the network.

  • Publication number: 20080212695
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for use in a multi-band OFDM wideband transmission systems are disclosed. A frame of source data is mapped by a transmitter for transmission using a first mapping. The frame of source data is then mapped by the transmitter for retransmission using a second mapping to increase frequency diversity. A receiver may identify source data that experiences fading and communicate the tone/frequency on which the fading occurred to the transmitter so that the transmitter may map the source data that experienced fading during transmission to another tone/frequency for retransmission.
