  • Publication number: 20130124826
Abstract: A technique for optimizing program instruction execution throughput in a central processing unit core (CPU). The CPU implements a simultaneous multithreading (SMT) operational mode wherein program instructions associated with at least two software threads are executed in parallel as hardware threads while sharing one or more hardware resources used by the CPU, such as cache memory, translation lookaside buffers, functional execution units, etc. As part of the SMT mode, the CPU implements an autothread (AT) operational mode. During the AT operational mode, a determination is made whether there is a resource conflict between the hardware threads that undermines instruction execution throughput. If a resource conflict is detected, the CPU adjusts the relative instruction execution rates of the hardware threads based on relative priorities of the software threads.

  • Patent number: 8441645
Abstract: A microfabricated analysis chip with integrated waveguides for evanescent field absorption detection is provided. Fabrication of the microfluidic device may be performed by micropatterning a layer of photoresist or other suitable material using a single step photoresist process to produce a microchannel and an optical structure (e.g., a U-bend waveguide) in the microfluidic device. The microfluidic device couples a micro-channel network with a waveguide in a collinear fashion to maintain higher path length and incurring little or no scattering, dispersion, and divergence losses. A sample can be passed through the microchannel while light is transmitted through the waveguide. Any change in refractive index as well as change in optical absorbance property of fluid flowing in the microchannel can be detected by detecting changes in light output power (e.g., changes in absorbance). A change in concentration of solution in the microchannel can be determined by detecting a change in light absorbance output.

  • Publication number: 20130115744
Abstract: A method of fabricating a vertical gate region in LDMOS transistor includes depositing a first masking layer on an n-well region implanted on a substrate, patterning the first masking layer to define an area, depositing a second masking layer over the area, etching through the second masking layer in a first portion of the area to expose the n-well region, and etching the exposed n-well region to form a first trench. The first trench, extending from a surface of the n-well region to a first depth, is filled with an oxide. The second masking layer is etched through in a second portion of the area to expose the n-well region. A second trench is formed in the n-well, the second trench extending from the surface to a second depth, less than the first depth. An asymmetric vertical gate is formed by filling the second trench with a conductive material.

Abstract: A method in one example implementation includes intercepting a request associated with an execution of an object (e.g., a kernel module or a binary) in a computer configured to operate in a virtual machine environment. The request is associated with a privileged domain of the computer that operates logically below one or more operating systems. The method also includes verifying an authorization of the object by computing a checksum for the object and comparing the checksum to a plurality of stored checksums in a memory element. The execution of the object is denied if it is not authorized. In other embodiments, the method can include evaluating a plurality of entries within the memory element of the computer, wherein the entries include authorized binaries and kernel modules. In other embodiments, the method can include intercepting an attempt from a remote computer to execute code from a previously authorized binary.

  • Patent number: 8436852
Abstract: Image editing which is consistent with geometry of a scene depicted in the image is described. In an embodiment a graphical user interface (GUI) is provided to enable a user to simply and quickly specify four corners of a rectangular frame drawn onto a source image using the GUI. In embodiments, the four corners are used to compute parameters of a virtual camera assumed to capture the image of the drawn frame. Embodiments of an image processing system are described which use the virtual camera parameters to control editing of the source image in ways consistent with the 3D geometry of the scene depicted in that image. In some embodiments out of bounds images are formed and/or realistic-looking shadows are synthesized. In examples, users are able to edit images and the virtual camera parameters are dynamically recomputed and used to update the edited image.

  • Patent number: 8438139
Abstract: A dynamic layer above a sequential deduplication file system (denoted as DFS) implements the rewrite functionality. A user file is composed of one or more DFS files. As incoming data is written into a user file, the data is written by the dynamic layer sequentially into DFS files, created one by one. For each user file this dynamic layer creates and maintains a dynamic metadata file, in a regular, non deduplicated file system. This metadata file contains entries pointing to sections of DFS files.
