The apparatus also includes a plasmonic transducer that has two metal elements configured as side-by-side plates on a substrate-parallel plane with a gap therebetween. The gap is disposed along the substrate-parallel plane and has an input end disposed proximate the transducer region and an output end. The transducer is configured to provide a surface plasmon-enhanced near-field radiation pattern proximate the output end in response to the light received by the waveguide.

Abstract: Systems and methods provide variable spring stiffness for weight management in a vehicle. One system includes a plurality of springs and a plurality of spring retainers configured to adjust a number of inactive coils of the plurality of springs. Additionally, a motor is provided that is connected to the plurality of spring retainers and configured to actuate the spring retainers to adjust the number of inactive coils of the plurality of springs. Further, a controller is provided that is coupled to motor to control the motor to actuate the spring retainers to adjust the number of inactive coils of the plurality of springs.

Abstract: A forecast model processes performance data from a site, e.g., a cable modem termination system (CMTS), to obtain a set of concurrency equations for existing speed tiers that is based on an observed subscriber bandwidth for the site. A new set of concurrency equations is obtained for new speed tiers so that a new subscriber bandwidth can be predicted for the new speed tiers. Based on the new subscriber bandwidth, expected subscriber growth, and changes in data consumption, the site is reconfigured with additional ports based on the forecast. This process can be repeated for the other sites. Sites may be grouped together based on the observed subscriber bandwidth. A new subscriber bandwidth may be predicted for the group with the new speed tiers so that additional ports can be configured for each of the sites in the group.

Abstract: A PDF document is repurposed to save paper and ink. Preprocessing is performed on the PDF document. The PDF document has a first quantity of pages of content and a first quantity of ink. Further, complexity analysis is performed on the PDF document. In addition, a document object model based on the PDF document is created. In addition, content re-layout is performed on the PDF document based on the content repurposing such that a printer prints the PDF document with the content in a transformed format that results in a second quantity of pages being printed without falling below a predetermined readability threshold and a second quantity of ink being utilized. The second quantity of pages is less than the first quantity of pages. The second quantity of ink is less than the first quantity of ink.

Abstract: A downhole communication system and method is presented for communicating between a downhole location within a wellbore and a surface location. The system preferably comprises a first and second telemetry module, a downhole tool, and an interface electrically connecting the downhole tool to the first and second telemetry modules. The first telemetry module is connected to a string and positioned downhole within the wellbore, and configured to receive communication signals via acoustic propagation or low frequency electromagnetic transmission. The second telemetry module is connected to the string and positioned downhole within the wellbore, and configured to receive communication signals via fluid pressure pulse commands. The downhole tool is operatively connected to the string. And the interface is adapted to selectively relay digital communication signals between the downhole tool and at least one of the first and second telemetry modules.

Abstract: An apparatus for and method of encapsulating Ethernet frames over a Very high speed Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) transport facility. The VDSL frames are transmitted over a point to point VDSL link where they are subsequently extracted and forwarded as standard Ethernet frames. The VDSL facility transport system comprises an Ethernet to VDSL Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) coupled to a DSL Access Multiplexor (DSLAM) over a VDSL transport facility. The Ethernet to VDSL CPE functions to receive a 10BaseT Ethernet signal and encapsulate the Ethernet frame into a VDSL frame for transmission over the VDSL facility. The DSLAM is adapted to receive VDSL frames, extract Ethernet frames therefrom and generate and output a standard Ethernet signal. Ethernet frames are encapsulated within VDSL frames and transmitted on the wire pair without regard to the state of the SOC signals.

Abstract: An embodiment of the present invention takes the form of a system that may recirculate a portion of the exhaust of at least one turbomachine where it may be mixed with the inlet air and re-enter the turbomachine without affecting reliability and availability of the unit. An embodiment of the present invention provides an inlet system for an exhaust gas recirculation system. This inlet system may take a variety of forms and may optimize the direction that the portion of the recirculated exhaust stream flows within the inlet system.

Abstract: A mechanism for implementation of system signaling 7 (SS7) layers as microcontainer beans in a media gateway is disclosed. A method of the invention includes implementing one or more System Signaling No. 7 (SS7) Message Transfer Part (MTP) layers as plain old JAVA objects (POJOs), associating each of the one or more SS7 MTP layers with JBoss Microcontainer Beans, and installing the one or more SS7 MTP layer Microcontainer Beans in a media gateway.
