  • Publication number: 20210288617
Abstract: A power amplifier linearization circuit and related apparatus is provided. In examples disclosed herein, the power amplifier linearization circuit includes an analog pre-distortion (APD) circuit coupled to an input of a power amplifier. Notably, the power amplifier can exhibit linearity response deviation, namely linearity amplitude response deviation and linearity phase response deviation, when amplifying a radio frequency (RF) signal under a compression condition. As such, the APD circuit is configured to receive a control signal corresponding to the linearity response deviation and pre-process the RF signal based on the control signal before providing the RF signal to the power amplifier. As a result, it may be possible to reduce the linearity response deviation in the power amplifier, thus helping to improve linearity and RF performance of the power amplifier.

  • Patent number: 11094459
Abstract: This disclosure relates generally to substrates having three dimensional (3D) inductors and methods of manufacturing the same. In one embodiment, the 3D inductor is a solenoid inductor where the exterior edge contour of the winding ends is substantially the same and substantially aligned with the exterior edge contour of the exterior edge contour of conductive vias that connect the windings. In this manner, there is no overhang between the windings and the conductive vias. In another embodiment of the 3D inductor, via columns connect connector plates. The via column attachment surfaces of each of the conductive vias in each of the columns is the same and substantially aligned. In this manner, carrier pads are not needed and there is no overhand between the conductive vias.

  • Publication number: 20210233708
Abstract: Inductor trimming using sacrificial magnetically coupled loops is provided. Embodiments disclosed herein realize a trimmable inductor by using one or more magnetic sacrificial loops that are galvanically isolated from an adjacent primary loop of an inductor structure and which can be disabled by interrupting conduction in the sacrificial loop. When the magnetic sacrificial loop is closed, it magnetically couples to the primary loop and impacts an overall structure inductance. When conduction through the sacrificial loop is interrupted, there is no more magnetic coupling to the primary loop and there is no inductance impact from that particular sacrificial loop. The trimmable inductor can be permanently or temporarily trimmed. For example, conduction through the one or more sacrificial loops can be interrupted by removing a portion or the entire sacrificial loop (e.g., using a laser cut process). In other examples, conduction can be interrupted by a switching element, such as a transistor.

  • Patent number: 11069970
Abstract: A multi-radio access technology (RAT) antenna assembly and related front-end package is provided. In one aspect, the multi-RAT antenna assembly includes a radiating structure that radiates/absorbs a first electromagnetic wave corresponding to a first RAT in a first RF spectrum (e.g., below 6 GHz). A number of slot openings are created in the radiating structure to function as a number of slot antennas for radiating/absorbing a second electromagnetic wave corresponding to a second RAT in a second RF spectrum (e.g., above 18 GHz). As such, the multi-RAT antenna assembly can support both the first RAT and the second RAT based on the radiating structure, thus helping to reduce real estate requirements of the multi-RAT antenna assembly. In another aspect, a front-end circuit supporting the second RAT is coupled to the slot openings via shortest possible paths in a front-end package, thus helping to reduce propagation attenuation in the front-end package.

  • Patent number: 11018702
Abstract: A multi-radio access technology (RAT) circuit is provided. The multi-RAT circuit includes a radio frequency (RF) circuit(s) coupled to an interconnect medium(s). The RF circuit(s) includes a power head circuit configured to receive a local oscillation (LO) pilot and an RF signal via the interconnect medium(s). The power head circuit generates an LO signal based on the LO pilot without requiring a synthesizer. Accordingly, the power head circuit modulates the RF signal to a carrier band based on the LO signal for transmission in a millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum. By generating the LO signal and modulating the RF signal to the carrier band in the power head circuit, it may be possible to minimize attenuation and/or interference to the RF signal. Further, it may also be possible to share the interconnect medium(s) with existing RATs, thus helping to reduce size, power, and cost impacts associated with supporting an mmWave RAT.

  • Patent number: 11005181
Abstract: A multi-layer antenna assembly and related antenna array are provided. In one aspect, a multi-layer antenna assembly includes a first radiating layer(s) and a second radiating layer(s). The second radiating layer(s) is provided below and in parallel to the first radiating layer(s). The second radiating layer(s) overlaps at least partially with the first radiating layer(s). In this regard, an electromagnetic wave radiated vertically from the second radiating layer(s) is horizontally guided by an overlapping portion of the first radiating layer(s). In another aspect, an antenna array can be configured to include a number of multi-layer antenna assemblies to enable radio frequency (RF) beamforming. By employing the multi-layer antenna assemblies in the antenna array, it may be possible to flexibly and naturally steer an RF beam in a desired direction(s) without causing oversized side lobes, thus helping to improve power efficiency and performance of the antenna array.

  • Patent number: 10951183
Abstract: Power amplifier (PA) output memory neutralization is disclosed, using baseband input/output (I/O) capacitance current compensation. Radio frequency (RF) PAs experience I/O memory effects when used with envelope tracking supply modulation schemes. Envelope tracking supply modulation results in a nonlinear variation of the I/O capacitance. Traditional approaches compensate for such effects with a current provided by a bias circuit which is band-limited. This results in memory effects which distort the amplified signal, becoming more significant as the modulation bandwidth increases. An RF communications system according to embodiments disclosed herein mitigates such memory effects by compensating for the non-linear effect of the I/O capacitance in an RF PA.
