Abstract: Disclosed is a method of communicating image data to a second communications device from a first communications device while the first communications device is in an image communications mode of operation. The method includes the steps of checking the codecs of the second communications device when receiving an image communication; storing the codecs of the second communications device if the codecs of the first communications device do not match with the codecs of the second communications device; and encoding selected image data using one of the codecs of the second communications device when the encoded selected image data is to be transmitted to the second communications device.

A captured image signal is coded into a still picture signal based upon a frame size. A received audio signal is coded. An image header containing image pattern information and frame size information is inserted into the still picture signal based upon the frame size. The still picture signal based upon the frame size into which the image header is inserted is combined with the coded audio signal. While the above-described operations are repeated, consecutive still picture signals based upon the frame size are combined with corresponding audio signals. When a recording operation is completed, a combined signal representative of a result of the combining is stored in a moving picture file.

A blurring decision part classifies the received image into character blocks and background blocks, calculates an average energy ratio of the character blocks, and compares the average energy ratio with a predetermined threshold to determine whether the received image is blurred. If the received image is not blurred, an image binarization part classifies the received image into character blocks and background blocks, compares pixels in the character blocks with a pixel threshold, binarizes the pixels in the character blocks into a brightness value for a character pixel and a brightness value for a background pixel based on the comparison, and binarizes pixels in the background blocks into the brightness value for a background pixel. A character recognition part recognizes characters in the binarized image.

The image enhancement method and system are capable of improving image quality by performing gamma corrections on global and local illuminations and reflectance estimated from an input image, in consideration of dynamic range and contrast of the image, respectively. Particularly, in a case of a color image, the red, green, and blue (RGB) component images are converted into hue, saturation, and value (HSV) component images, and the global and local illuminations and reflectance estimated from the V component image. By converting the hue (H), saturation (S), and enhanced value (V) into RGB, an enhanced color image can be obtained.
