  • Patent number: 5536362
Abstract: Methods of constructing a wire interconnect structure on a substrate are described. The methods broadly comprise the steps of depositing a spacer layer on a surface of the substrate, depositing a mask layer on the spacer layer, and removing a first portion of the mask layer overlying a desired area on the substrate surface to expose the spacer layer underlying the first portion of the mask layer. The methods further comprise the step of etching the structure such that a first portion of the spacer layer overlaying the desired area is removed and such that a portion of the desired area is exposed, and the step of depositing a first conductive material on the exposed portion of the desired area such that a conductive post is formed on the substrate surface and mounted to the desired area. Some of the disclosed methods comprise additional steps for forming an interconnect structure on the opposite surface of the substrate and providing an electrical interconnect means between the two interconnect structures.

  • Patent number: 5534678
Abstract: A pyrolytically cleaned oven includes an upper broil element and a lower bake element, the broil element is energized until the oven temperature reaches a trigger temperature, well below the glass transition temperature point of the oven porcelain enamel; then the bake and broil elements are alternately energized in a cyclical manner until an off temperature, somewhat above the trigger temperature but still below the transition temperature, is reached. Thereafter one or both of the elements are cycled to maintain the temperature with a range between the off temperature and a lower on temperature, also within the effective self cleaning range.

  • Patent number: 5526444
Abstract: An image decoding and recognition system and method comprising a fast heuristic algorithm using hidden Markov models (HMM). The new search algorithm, called an "iterative complete path" (ICP) algorithm, patterned after well-known branch-and-bound (B&B) methods, significantly reduces the complexity and improves the speed of HMM image decoding without sacrificing the optimality of the straightforward procedure. An advantageous form of the heuristic functions which is useful in applying the ICP algorithm to text-like images is described. The ICP algorithm is directly applicable to the separable type of finite-state source models. Also disclosed is a technique for transforming more general source models into such a separable form.

  • Patent number: 5516520
Abstract: A particulate controlled-release pesticide composition having a pesticide encapsulated in a polymer matrix of starch-borax-urea and method of preparation and use thereof is provided. The release rates and release duration of the pesticide compositions are controllable by adjusting the urea content in the compositions. The pesticide composition is preparable by admixing starch, pesticide, urea and water together to form a mixture and agitating the same at a temperature sufficient to gelatinize the mixture and to disperse the mixture. Borax is then added to the mixture in an amount effective to convert the mixture into a rubbery mass. The rubbery mass is then comminuted into small particles, in the presence of added starch, and dried.

  • Patent number: 5515657
Abstract: A winding stair for spiral ascension within a building structure. The stair includes a newel post which has a plurality of elongated slots horizontally formed around the periphery at different elevations. Each steps of the winding stair is provided with an arched end plate located along an inner narrow end of the step. With each arched end plate formed to hug the outer surface of the newel post. A curved flange portion extends upwardly along a top edge of the arched end plate. Steps are attached to the newel post as by inserting the curved flange portion within the elongated slots and allowing the arched end plate to rest against the periphery of the newel post. Aligned openings in each of the newel post and arched end plate, receive fasteners to secure the step to the newel post. The curved flange also has openings aligned with openings in the newel post receiving fasteners which serves to further secure the step to the post.

  • Patent number: 5514906
Abstract: A compact, reliable, and efficient cooling system for semiconductor chips is disclosed. In one embodiment, a plurality of semiconductor chips have their active surfaces mounted to a major substrate which provides electrical connections among the chips, and a cooling channel is formed above the major substrate and each chip for conducting a cooling fluid over the back surface of the chips. To increase cooling efficiency, heat sink arrays are formed on the back surfaces of the chips, each array including a plurality of heat conducting elements attached to the back surface. The arrays may be readily and inexpensively constructed with photo-lithography or wire bonding techniques. To control the flow of cooling fluid around the chip edges and to prevent cavitation of the cooling fluid a cavitation and flow control plate disposed at the bottom surface of the cooling channel and formed around the edges of the chips is included.

  • Patent number: 5509756
Abstract: An end connector for use with oil containment booms, wherein the connector design utilizes a stress distribution technique which avoids the need for proximal end flanges, internal cavity traction surfaces, and further avoids bolts, rivets, or other fasteners through the boom fin end. The end connector design has a smaller size than conventional end connector designs with comparable tensile strength capabilities. Further, the end connector may be fabricated faster than conventional end connectors, reduces connector cost, and reduces final boom assembly time.
