  • Patent number: 5475781
Abstract: An optical fiber connector assembly (70) includes a duplex clip (30) having two cavities (32) and two standard SC type connectors (10) side-by-side received therein wherein one connector (10) inter-mates with an optical emitter and the other connector inter-mates with an optical detector. A loop-back optical fiber (20) is generally positioned in the rear exterior of the duplex clip (30) with two distal ends of the fiber being respectively connected to the rear ends of the corresponding two connectors (10) inside such duplex clip. A back shield (40) fixedly encloses the duplex clip (30) from the back wherein such back shield (40) further includes a rearwardly projection hermetic portion whose shape conforms to the configuration of such loop-back fiber (20) for protection. Also, for protection, two caps (48) can be optionally respectively attached to the front portions of the connectors (10) extending forwardly from the clip (30).

  • Patent number: 5474458
Abstract: Interconnect carriers for coupling integrated circuit chips to major substrates and methods for making the same are disclosed. The interconnect carrier comprises a relatively thin resilient supporting layer, a plurality of electrically conductive vias formed through the surfaces of the supporting layer, and an outer frame disposed around the periphery of the supporting layer. The supporting layer preferably comprises an electrically insulating material. The flexibility of the supporting layer enables the layer to more readily conform to the warpages of the IC chip and supporting substrate, while the outer frame provides mechanical support and prevents the supporting layer from folding, twisting, and/or stretching. The thickness of the supporting layer may be substantially reduced over that of prior art interposers to enable methods for constructing smaller diameter vias.

  • Patent number: 5474554
Abstract: A suture-wire device for fracture fixation is composed of a metal pin and a segment of wire. The anterior part of the device is a metal pin with sharp tip and a hole at the end where one segment or multiple segments of flexible wire is connected. The wire is embedded in the hole and tightly fixed by mechanical methods into one piece. An impactor is a metal cylinder with conical end having a trough which is slightly wider than the diameter of wire along the core of the impactor. After reduction of the fracture, two suture-wires are drilled across the fracture line in parallel. The impactor is applied onto a blunt end of the pin with the wire in the trough. The remaining part of the pins are then hammered into the bone by applying a force to the impactor. One of the wires of the two suture-wires is then bent and looped behind the tips of the pins which protrude from the other end of fractured bone. The two wires are then brought together and tightened, and the protruding ends of the pins are cut.

  • Patent number: 5475262
Abstract: A semiconductor device is manufactured by subdividing the chip carrier into a plurality of functional substrates, such as a signal connection substrate, a capacitor substrate, a resistor substrate and a power supply substrate. The several substrates are individually manufactured and tested before they are assembled. Advantageously, the manufacturing and testing of the substrates are carried out in parallel, so as to reduce manufacturing time of the semiconductor device. Each substrate has a top interconnect layer and a bottom interconnect layer. Each interconnect layer has a plurality of bond pads in an identical pattern. The pads are formed using the same design rules, structure, pitch, diameter and fabrication process for each layer. This identity allows the different functional substrates to be electrically interchanged without changing the interconnection layers. Although changes internal in the substrate may be required.

  • Patent number: 5472449
Abstract: A device for applying permanent pigment, such as in a tattooing procedure, which has a disposable needle coupler which couples the needle to the device. The device has a housing which is structured to allow easy user access to the internal parts that are likely to be exposed to contamination from the tattooing procedure. The needle coupler is structured to allow easy manipulation to detach it from or attach it to the device without require the use or tools. The pigment applicator device may be a manual device or an electro-mechanically driven device. In the latter, the needle coupler is detachably coupled to a drive mechanism for actuating reciprocal axial movement of the needle via the needle coupler. The drive mechanism may include a cam for translating a rotational motion into a reciprocal axial motion of the needle coupler.

  • Patent number: 5466346
Abstract: A method for synthesizing quinone from an aromatic compound is developed that employs a paired electro-oxidation method and a undivided electrochemical cell. The electrolyte solution is a combination of an aromatic solution (aqueous or nonaqueous) and a redox mediator solution, which can be V.sup.5+ /V.sup.4+, Fe.sup.3+ /Fe.sup.2+, or Cu.sup.2+ /Cu.sup.+, in an undivided electrochemical cell. The electrolyte reaction is conducted by bubbling oxygen into the bottom of the cathode, then the oxygen is reduced to hydrogen peroxide (H.sub.2 O.sub.2). Simultaneously, at the anode surface, lower valence state ions can be oxidized to higher valence states. Hydrogen peroxide then oxidizes the rest of the low valence state ions to form high valence ions, OH-free radicals, and combinations of both. These ions and radicals then react with the aromatic compound in the solution and form the resultant product, quinone.

  • Patent number: 5463471
Abstract: A method of color halftone reproduction with reduced moire patterns and simplified calculations of color densities is disclosed. The method entails dividing a reproduction surface into an array of abutting halftone cells having centers aligned at a screen angle, preferably 45.degree. , with halftone cells in adjacent rows. The halftone cells each cover an area of M abutting horizontal dots long by N abutting vertical dots wide. The various system colors are applied to the pels, as required, in color patterns centered within the halftone cells. The patterns overlap one another to adjust the hue of the reproduction at the halftone cell location to the desired hue. The method is usable with permanent reproductions, such as printed paper, or with transient reproductions, such as the image on a CRT screen.
