  • Patent number: 6539273
Abstract: A continuous caster is controlled by a method anticipating the liquidus temperature in the mold of the caster to prevent premature solidification. The temperature in the tundish is measured and based upon the tundish temperature and the resistance time of the molten metal in the tundish, an equivalent liquidus temperature window is defined and the speed of the continuous caster is controlled to maintain this window of operation of the tundish.

  • Patent number: 6536505
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for producing slabs in a continuous casting plant preferably equipped with a vertical mold, preferably for thin slab plants for casting preferably steel having, for example, a solidification thickness of 60 mm-120 mm, for example, 80 mm, and casting speeds of up to 10 m/min. and a maximum casting output of about 3 million tons per year. In a first vertically extending first segment 0 of a strand guide, exclusive strand reduction, also called casting and rolling, is carried out. The segment 1 arranged immediately underneath the first segment 0 carries out bending of the strand through several bending points into the inner circular arc. Prior to final solidification, the strand is bent back through several return bending points into the horizontal.

  • Patent number: 6471911
Abstract: In a method for sealing a tap opening in a metallurgical container a plug with a plug sleeve and a refractory flowable material is provided having a metal rod or pipe surrounded by a protective pipe connected thereto. The plug sleeve and the protective pipe are made of a material resistant to a molten mass of metal in the metallurgical container only for a short period of time. The material is a temporarily heat-insulating material which cokes within the molten mass of metal and is cardboard or wood. The time of introduction of the plug sleeve is controlled based on measured parameters of the molten mass. The plug is introduced into the tap opening by guiding the plug with the metal rod or pipe through the molten mass in the metallurgical container. The plug sleeve changes by temperature action of the molten mass of metal such that the flowable material is distributed in the tap opening and seals the tap opening.

  • Publication number: 20010047857
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for guiding strands in a continuous casting installation, in particular an installation for producing thin slabs made of steel, having an ingot mold and a strand-guidance frame which is provided with a cooling device. In this case, heat is extracted indirectly from the strand after it leaves the ingot mold, and the strand, at least in sections, is held in shape, guided in the strand discharge direction and additionally cooled by means of a gaseous medium. Furthermore, the strand is additionally moved in a defined manner and at a predeterminable speed through the strand frame by mechanical means, the speed of the strand being accelerated or decelerated.

  • Patent number: 6327330
Abstract: A computed tomography apparatus has an apparatus that rotates during the operation off the CT apparatus, and except for a detector system for the detection of measurement data, all components that are necessary for the generation of image data from the measurement data are arranged on this apparatus part. A reduced data transmission rate results therefrom given the data transmission from the rotating apparatus part to a stationary apparatus part, with the consequence that the outlay that is expended in conjunction with the data transmission is reduced.

  • Patent number: 6308769
Abstract: A continuous casting plant suitable for casting steel slabs, wherein the partially solidified strand composed of a strand shell and a partially liquid core is guided after emerging from the mold during the further solidification between the rollers of a strand guiding unit which has a loose or movable side and a fixed side, and wherein the strand shell forms in the areas between always two rollers spaced apart from each other in the casting direction a deformation in the form of a bulge with an increase of the cross-section. For compensating for an increase of the cross-section of a respective strand portion, a counter-pressure is applied from the outside against the strand area located opposite the strand portion with the increased cross-section in order to reduce the cross-section.
