  • Patent number: 6970413
Abstract: A data storage unit having a data storage layer with multiple storage areas having a medium disposed thereon that changes between a plurality of states for writing and reading information thereon includes an array of light emitters, such as laser light probes or near-field light sources, spaced in close proximity to the data storage layer for selectively directing light beams to the data storage layer during write and read phases. Data is stored by directing a first light beam to the medium to change to a state representative of data. Data is read by exciting the storage areas with a second directed light beam on the medium. Alternately, the light energy beams in the write or read phases may be generated by a near-field optical system generating evanescent fields. The medium generates electron-hole pairs having substantially different activity in each storage area, depending upon its state.

  • Patent number: 6969515
Abstract: Methods of thrombolysis that allow the use of a fibrinolytic composition comprising reversibly inactivated acidified plasmin and the localized delivery of the plasmin to a vascular thrombotic occlusion are disclosed. Further disclosed is a method for administering a therapeutic dose of a fibrinolytic composition substantially free of plasminogen activator to a human or animal having a vascular thrombotic occlusion. The fibrinolytic composition includes a reversibly inactivated acidified plasmin substantially free of plasminogen activator. Intravascular catheter delivery of the fibrinolytic composition directly into or in the immediate vicinity of the thrombus is disclosed to minimize the systemic degradation of fibrin while retaining the maximum plasmin activity against the thrombus. The method is applicable to the dissolution of thrombi in artificial devices, e.g., hemodialysis grafts.

  • Publication number: 20050259242
Abstract: The invention provides automated systems and methods for measuring ORL of fibers under test. A computer-based test instrument using OTDR tests fibers with the help of a STFM having predefined characteristics that are recorded in a machine-readable memory. The information recorded in the memory is accessible to the computer-based instrument and is used to calibrate a power level of an illumination source in real time using the reflectance response of the STFM. The calibrated illumination power allows the instrument to automatically determine the ORL of the fiber being tested with precision, and without requiring the intervention of an operator. The instrument also has the capability to automatically sense the presence of a test fiber, and to automatically attenuate the reflectance signal to remove a saturation condition by controlling at least one of the illumination, the detector gain, an amplifier gain, and an optional in-line optical attenuator.
