  • Patent number: 8442362
Abstract: An optical coupling structure that interfaces between optical devices mounted on a substrate and optical waveguides formed in the substrate. A manufacturing method includes preparing a wafer formed on an inorganic solid material on a dicing tape and cutting the back surface of the wafer to form substantially angled portions using a dicing blade having a point angle. The dicing tape is stripped from the wafer and the wafer is separated at the valleys between the substantially angled portions to obtain an optical coupling element. The obtained optical coupling element is a three-dimensional polyhedral light-reflecting member having a mirror surface corresponding to a surface of the wafer. The obtained optical coupling element is inserted into a trench that opens, substantially perpendicular to an optical waveguide of an optical transmission substrate, in the main surface of the optical transmission substrate to provide a structure for optical coupling with the outside.

  • Publication number: 20120314973
Abstract: An information processing apparatus, a calculation method, a program, and a storage medium for generating a uniformly distributed discrete pattern. To calculate a spatial arrangement of a plurality of elements of a discrete pattern, the plurality of elements being arranged in a spatially discrete manner, an information processing apparatus according to the present invention determines, for each of the elements, a density in an initial position given to the element from a density distribution of the elements in a region where the elements are arranged in the discrete pattern and places, for the initial position of each of the elements, a figure having a size corresponding to the density and representing a region where the element repels other elements and a movement range of the figure. The information processing apparatus minimizes an objective function, computes an optimal solution, and outputs the optimal solutions.

  • Publication number: 20120043678
Abstract: A method of forming an optical element for a color display device includes forming a lens shaped die, coating a low refractive index photo-setting resin on the lens shaped die, pasting the lens shaped die to a substrate, and irradiating the coated low refractive index photo-setting resin so as to set the low refractive index resin and form a low refractive index layer. The lens shaped die is removed from the low refractive index layer set on the substrate, a high refractive index photo-setting resin is coated on the low refractive index layer by use of a planarizing die, and the coated high refractive index photo-setting resin is irradiated so as to set the high refractive index resin and form a high refractive index layer. The planarizing die is then from the high refractive index layer set on the low refractive index layer.

  • Publication number: 20110153283
Abstract: A method and apparatus to optimally design the layout of a plurality of optical waveguides in a case where one or more crossings occur due to a planar configuration of optical waveguides. Embodiments include a plurality of default routes are set for all of a plurality of waveguides so that each of a plurality of waveguides bundled at an input end is split into two or more waveguides, one split waveguide, together with another split waveguide, forms one or more crossings, and a plurality of split waveguides are bundled at least two separate places at an output end. The number of crossings existing on each of the routes is counted. The default value (splitting ratio) of the cross section (thickness and shape) of each of one waveguide and a plurality of waveguides split from the one waveguide is set on the basis of the counted number of crossings.
