    Abstract: A coating system having a low thermal conductivity, and a method by which the low thermal conductivity of the coating system is maintained through the development of cracks within a thermal-insulating layer of the coating system. The thermal-insulating layer is a mixture of two or more materials with different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE). The materials of the thermal-insulating layer are selected and combined so that a low thermal conductivity is maintained for the coating system as the result of cracks developing and propagating from interfaces between the materials when the coating system is subjected to heating and cooling cycles.

    Abstract: A coating composition produces a protective coating to a substrate, which coating has an improved surface smoothness. The coating composition comprises a mixture of at least a first type of particles and a second type of particles that are dispersed in a liquid medium. The particles form a total population of particles having a median ESD in a range from about 1 to about 7 micrometers. The different types of particles have different median ESDs. The first type of particles has a maximum ESD of about 40 micrometers, and the second type of particles has a maximum ESD of about 20 micrometers. A method for producing a coating having an improved surface smoothness comprises applying such a coating composition on a substrate and curing the coating composition to produce a protective coating. The coating may be further densified by a burnishing process or further improved by applying another coating comprising particles having ESDs less than about 4 micrometers.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method and system for linear speed control for electric direct current motors, in which a digital to analog converter means is used for converting an 8-bit digital signal to an analog voltage for setting voltage across a motor, a digital state machine means is used for converting the duty cycle of an input signal for output to the digital to analog converter means, and a closed loop feedback means is used for monitoring and setting the voltage across the motor. An over-current sense circuit can be used for monitoring the current across or passing through the electric motor. An over/under voltage sense circuit can be used for monitoring voltage of the electric motor. The resulting 8-bit digital control signal is converted to an analog voltage for the electric motor.

    Abstract: Improved adhesion of thermal barrier coating systems to nonmetallic substrates using a layer of silica on an underlying nonmetallic substrate that includes a silicon containing material is described. The improved adhesion occurs because the improved thermal barrier system improves the temperature capability of the system by providing a layer adjacent the substrate that has improved thermal performance and that is not subject to deterioration. The application of a silica layer of predetermined thickness adjacent the substrate also forms a diffusion barrier for oxygen while eliminating the need to transform an external layer of the substrate by a pre-oxidation step. This diffusion barrier prevents any oxidizable component of the substrate from decomposing.

The T/EBC system includes an intermediate layer containing YSZ and BSAS, mullite and/or alumina, which is preferably used in combination with a mullite-containing layer that overlies the surface of the Si-containing material, a layer of BSAS between the mullite-containing layer and the intermediate layer, and a thermal-insulating top coat of YSZ overlying the intermediate layer.

    Abstract: The polishing composition of this invention is useful for chemical-mechanical polishing of substrates containing noble metals such as platinum and comprises up to about 50% by weight of a adjuvant wherein said adjuvant is selected from a group consisting of a metal-anion compound, a metal-cation compound or mixtures thereof; abrasive particles at about 0.5% to about 55% by weight of the polishing composition; and water-soluble organic additives up to about 10% by weight of the polishing composition. The abrasive particles are selected from the group consisting of alumina, ceria, silica, diamond, germania, zirconia, silicon carbide, boron nitride, boron carbide or mixtures thereof. The organic additives generally improve dispersion of the abrasive particles and also enhance metal removal rates and selectivity for metal removal by stabilizing the pH of the polishing composition and suppressing the dielectric removal rate.
