Abstract: A method for assembling a torque-limiting driver, and the resulting drive. The method comprises the steps of providing a handle having a housing, drive assembly, and a testing assembly. The drive assembly is assembled, inserted into the testing assembly and calibrated. The drive assembly is then removed and inserted into the housing of the handle and secured to the handle.

Abstract: A method of forming a composite handle for a medical device having a first step of forming an inside section of said handle that has at least one outwardly extending protrusion, and a second step of molding an outside section around the inside section. The two sections are made from different materials.

Abstract: A torque limiting and ratcheting driver having a housing and a torque limiting assembly located within said housing. The torque limiting assembly comprises a cam member, a plunger, and a roller supported by said plunger that interacts with the cam member. The ratcheting assembly is located interiorly of the cam member.

Abstract: A clutch assembly for use with a torque limiting driver. The clutch assembly comprises two relatively roatable clutch plates, a driving plate and a camming plate, that face one another, with a plurality of rolling members housed between the two members. When the rolling members are in the override position, the recesses form individual housings for the rolling members that include a gap located between the rolling members and a respective curvilinear base area of the drive plate. The clutch assembly is secured to a drive shaft by a pin, which is supported by a pair of wheels located on opposing sides of the pin.

Abstract: An adjustable, torque-limiting driver for a tool having a radially extending handle that houses a cam member and a pair of plungers. The plungers are biased against the housing and provide variable resistance for the cam member. The arrangement of the cam member and the plungers reduces the wear on the various parts of the driver and extends the life of the driver.

Abstract: A ratcheting driver configured to rotationally drive an item or work piece is provided. The driver includes a handle and pivotal pawls engageable with a driven gear and capable of ratcheting and driving in both rotational directions. The handle and pawls have mating matched surfaces for full and flush overlying contact therebetween. A cap that is rotatable relative to the handle and that has a web for pivoting the pawls out of engagement with the gear is also provided. In addition, a stop is included. The stop is configured to assure that only a correct direction of rotation of the cap is available when assembling. Also, a method of arranging the driver is provided.

Abstract: A clutch assembly for use with a torque limiting driver. The clutch assembly comprises two relatively rotatable clutch plates, a driving plate and a camming plate, that face one another, with a plurality of rolling members housed between the two members. The driving clutch member has a face comprising a plurality of radially spaced flat areas and a plurality of recesses interposed between the flat areas, with the recesses comprising a curvilinear base area. The second camming clutch member has a face comprising a plurality of radially spaced flat areas and a plurality of opposing downwardly sloped planar surfaces interposed between said flat areas, with the planar surfaces forming an angle. The rolling members are movable from an engaged position with the clutch members to an override position. When the rolling members are in the override position, the recesses form individual housings for the rolling members that include a gap located between the rolling members and a respective curvilinear base area.

Abstract: A ratchet screwdriver and method of making same wherein there is a handle and there are a ratchet gear and pawls inside the handle. An adjuster is inside the handle and is movable by a tool extending into the handle for positioning the adjuster relative to the gear and thereby eliminating play between the gear and the handle. Ball bearings are interposed between the handle and the gear and the bearings rotatably support the gear and transmit the anti-play forces that act on the gear.

The wrench further has an adjustment mechanism slidably connected the handle. The adjustment mechanism is in slidable contact with the adjustable jaw and further has an adjustment mechanism further having a locking mechanism. A locking area is located on the handle, which has a plurality of spaced apart locking stations. The locking mechanism is releasably engageable with the locking stations to thereby secure the adjustable jaw in a plurality of fixed positions.

Abstract: An instrument for applying a tie (12) to two items (10, 110), and a method of making same. The instrument is arranged for pulling separated bones or other items together and securing them together by twisting a tie onto them. The instrument can be made of plastic and it need not include any threaded parts. It can have two handles (21, 22) with a tie gripper (24) and a tie guide (26) on respective ones of the handles which can be squeezed together for pulling on a tie to draw separated items together. The handles rotate together, and there can be a crank (27) for effecting the rotation and thereby twist the tie onto the items.
