    Abstract: A method and system for operating an internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine is operable in a plurality of compression ratio operating modes. The method includes determining a relationship between a base engine threshold load where the high compression and low compression provide substantially the same engine fuel consumption and engine speed. The determined nominal relationship is modified by a factor, such factor being a function of a condition under which such engine is operating, to obtain a modified relationship. The modified relationship is a function of engine speed and the condition has an effect on knock generation in such engine. The modified relationship and engine speed are used in selecting one of the plurality of compression ratio operating modes for the engine.

When the average amplitude of the surge signal exceeds a calibrated surge threshold, the presence of high DI fuel is detected. Additionally, the method is disabled for a prescribed period following commanded load transitions associated with the air conditioning system and the automatic transmission.

The usage of high DI fuel is detected during engine cranking by measuring the time required for the engine speed to increase from a lower reference speed to an upper reference speed, provided the engine run time is less than a calibrated value. A timer is started when the lower reference speed is achieved, and the timer value is compared to a crank time threshold determined as a function of the initial engine coolant temperature. If the timer value exceeds the crank time threshold before the engine speed reaches the upper reference speed, the presence of high DI fuel is indicated, and the air/fuel ratio is temporarily enriched.

    Abstract: An improved method of diagnosing an engine cooling system through the use of a coolant temperature model based on existing sensor information. Proper operation of the engine thermostat and coolant temperature sensor is diagnosed based on an initial comparison of coolant temperature to ambient air temperature at key-on and a later comparison of coolant temperature to a predetermined regulated temperature. The coolant temperature model is used to trigger the initiation of the later comparison to ensure that the diagnostic is performed when the engine is fully warmed up. Advantageously, the modeled coolant temperature may be used for control purposes in the event that the diagnostic detects faulty operation of the coolant temperature sensor.

    Abstract: A system is disclosed for transmitting and receiving acoustic data signals in a well containing a drill string. The system includes devices for transmitting acoustic signals through the drill string, drilling mud, and formation, and further includes methods for transmitting and interpreting the acoustic signal so as to maximize accuracy of the transmission. The methods of the present invention include correlating signals transmitted along different paths or paths of different lengths, using frequency shift keying transmission, using shear waves to transmit signals through downhole equipment and using compression waves to transmit signals through the mud. The signals further give information about the frequency dependence of formation speed of sound and formation acoustic attenuation. The method also give information for imaging the locations of reflective boundaries in the material surrounding the borehole.
