  • Patent number: 9357378
Abstract: A subscriber identity module (SIM) card. The SIM card comprises a processor, a memory, and an operation object. The memory stores, in part, the operation object, an integrated circuit card identifier (ICCID), an international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI), and an authentication key. When executed by the processor, the operation object causes a browser to be executed on a mobile communication device into which the SIM card is installed, provides a uniform resource locator (URL) to the browser, wherein the URL identifies a Web site, and causes the browser to send a request to the URL to download a custom application launcher and to install the custom application launcher on the mobile communication device.

  • Patent number: 9356804
Abstract: The present disclosure introduces a layer of abstraction in the form of connection policies for applications to specify their needs for connections without having to worry about the specific details and particulars of requesting and receiving the connections. The various embodiments disclosed attempt to provide a connection in response to a request from an application wherein the application's request comprises a specified connection policy. Depending on the current state of the system/device, it can be determined whether to provide a connection that satisfies the specified connection policy or another available connection compliant with the current state of the system/device. In this way, a global optimization of the system/device and network resources can be achieved.

  • Patent number: 9356984
Abstract: A media device allows users to watch and capture portions from a media stream. Users may then share the captured media content with other users. In one embodiment, the media device receives a media stream, plays the media stream, and caches a portion of the media stream as it is being played. A user can define a media clip by selecting its boundaries in the cached portion of the media stream. The media device creates the media clip based on the user's input and enables the user to transmit the media clip to another system, such as a community website for sharing it with other users.

  • Patent number: 9354071
Abstract: Systems and methods may provide turn-by-turn directions to a group of users who wish to meet one another. The systems and methods make use of a client application running on client-side devices such as smart phones in conjunction with a server-side application running on a server. The identity of the final meeting place may not be determined until the users are in close proximity to it, as its location is subject to continuous updating using the geo-coordinates of the users as they travel. Additionally, the meeting place may be determined in part by the users' individual preferences. These preferences, along with the locations of the users, may be kept hidden from other users.

  • Patent number: 9354974
Abstract: A method includes issuing write commands to DS storage units regarding encoded data slices. A write command causes a storage unit to store an encoded data slice, but not allow access to the stored encoded data slices. The method includes receiving write acknowledgements from at least some of DS storage units to produce received write acknowledgements. The method includes, when a write threshold number of the received write acknowledgements have been received within a given time frame, issuing commit commands to the DS storage units. A commit command causes the storage unit to allow access to the stored encoded data slice. The method includes, when the write threshold number of the received write acknowledgements have not been received within the given time frame, issuing rollback commands to the DS units. A rollback command causes the storage unit to continue to not allow access to the stored encoded data slice.

  • Patent number: 9351773
Abstract: A tool is disclosed for use in distracting and compressing fractures of any of a variety of bones. In particular, the tool has a pair of engaging arms, one arm having a hook element to engage a bone plate connected to one side of a fracture, and the other arm having at least one recess for engaging a head of a bone screw or guide wire connected to the other side of the fracture. Actuation of the tool causes the opposing bone segments of the fracture to be pushed apart or drawn together, depending on whether the tool handles are squeezed together or pulled apart. The tool may have a scissors joint that allows the ends of the tool to maintain a parallel alignment during operation, thus reducing the chances for misalignment of the bone segments during operation.
