    Abstract: A method of making a silicone hydrogel contact lens from a monomer mixture that includes: N-vinyl-N-methyl acetamide, N-vinyl pyrrolidone or a mixture thereof; a monofunctional polysiloxanylalkyl monomer, and a polysiloxane-containing monomer having a perfluorinated side chain on a terminal carbon. The monomer mixture is charged to a mold and then subjected to spin casting or static casting. The casted mold is exposed to visible light or UV radiation. The resulting silicone hydrogel contact lens has an oxygen permeability of at least about 120 Barrers, a water content of at least about 20 weight percent, and a modulus from 40 g/mm2 to 97 g/mm2.

    Abstract: Packaging systems for storing ophthalmic devices such as contact lenses and to methods for packaging such ophthalmic devices with solutions to improve the comfort of the lenses during wear are disclosed. A packaging system includes an ophthalmic device stored in an aqueous packaging solution comprising a substantially water-soluble silicone-containing surfactant. Such solutions are retained on the surface of an unused lens for extended periods of time, resulting in surface modification that persists in the eye, which may provide significant improvement in the wetting properties of fresh contact lenses used for the first time and, moreover, even several hours after lens insertion, preventing dryness and improving lubricity.

The method comprises irradiating select regions of the optical, polymeric material with a focused, visible or near-IR laser having a pulse energy from 0.05 nJ to 1000 nJ. The irradiation results in the formation of refractive optical structures, characterized by a change in refractive index, exhibit little or no scattering loss, and exhibit no significant differences in the Raman spectrum with respect to the non-irradiated optical, polymeric material. The method can be used to modify the refractive index of an intraocular lens following the surgical implantation of the intraocular lens in a human eye.
