  • Patent number: 8519298
Abstract: A dual-beam laser cutting system uses laser beam polarization to output two identical laser beams. The dual identical laser beams are spaced appropriately to simultaneously cut a water thus increasing the laser cutting system's throughput as compared to a single-laser cutting system. In one implementation, the dual-beam laser cutting system 100 utilizes a beam expander 220, two half-wave plates 224, 238, a polarizing beam splitter 228, a mirror 236, and two lenses 234, 242 to provide two identical laser beams 202, 204 from a single laser source 214. The identical laser beams 202, 204 are tuned to have the same power, cross-sectional diameter, and polarization direction. One of the half-wave plates 224 is rotated to yield laser beams with the same power. The other half-wave plate 238 is rotated to yield laser beams with the same polarization direction.

  • Publication number: 20130153494
Abstract: Described herein are methods and devices for biologically treating water and/or wastewater. The methods and devices for treating waste water may be enhanced using an air-lift device which moves water and/or solids using volumes of air. This device can provide occasional surges of water using large bubbles which are able to move great volume of liquid while minimizing dissolved oxygen transfer to the surrounding liquid. Use of the devices and processes herein provides a simple, eloquent approach to waste water treatment with less operation and maintenance costs than conventional devices and/or processes.

  • Patent number: 7916308
Abstract: An optical profiler for an ultra-smooth surface, such as a magnetic recording disk, provides for a normally incident beam deflection against the target surface to be profiled. A linearly polarized laser light of a first polarization is focused on the target surface in a normally incident direction. The beam is reflected back along its original path from the focal point. Optics are provided that change the polarization of the reflected beam to a second polarization. A reflected beam, with a second polarization, is directed onto a position sensitive detector for evaluation.

  • Publication number: 20080300902
Abstract: In the field of pharmacovigilance (monitoring of adverse events associated with the use of marketed prescription drugs), an improved method of detecting “signals” of abuse or diversion of pharmaceuticals is needed, in order to more reliably distinguish real anomalies in pharmaceutical consumption in particular locations from apparent anomalies which are statistical artifacts of high local concentrations of authorized pharmaceutical users. An improved method relies upon government statistics on adverse drug reactions and on census statistics, and employs a Poisson statistical model to adjust for both fixed effects and random effects, such as spatial relations between different locations. The more accurate “signals” provided by the improved method permit public health and law enforcement officials to allocate public resources more efficiently and effectively.

  • Publication number: 20070159281
Abstract: In accordance with certain embodiments, the present invention provides a magnetizing system. This system includes a guide channel that is configured to receive a ferromagnetic element. When in this channel, a magnetic field source of the system is operable to magnetize the ferromagnetic element. Also, the exemplary system includes an actuation mechanism that drives the ferromagnetic element through the guide channel. Because a positioning mechanism of the system has aligned the guide channel with a slot of an electromagnetic machine component, the ferromagnetic element is routed through the channel and into the slot.

  • Publication number: 20070137733
Abstract: A system and method for a permanent magnet, having boron, iron, and a rare-earth material. The rare-earth material includes neodymium, at least 50 weight percent praseodymium, 0-20 weight percent terbium, and 5-25 weight percent dysprosium, wherein the permanent magnet comprises an intrinsic coercivity of at least 17 kilo Oersteds. Due to this high intrinsic coercivity, the permanent magnet may be subjected to high-temperature (e.g., greater than 80° C.) applications (e.g., as a component of a motor, generator, and so forth). In one exemplary application, a generator within a commercial wind turbine or windmill incorporates 3 tons of the permanent-magnet material.

  • Patent number: 7092100
Abstract: An arrangement and method for reliably finding the wave form extrema of interference signals produced by a quadrature phase shift interferometer (QPSI) takes advantage of the quadrature property of I and Q signals. The zero-crossing points in the I and Q signals are determined. Peak detection is performed for peaks and valleys in the Q signal in close proximity to the zero-crossing points in the I signal, and for peaks and valleys in the I signal in close proximity to the zero-crossing points in the Q signal. These represent the maximum and minimum points of the I and Q signals. From these points, intensity envelopes are created and QPSI phase wrapping is performed to determine the phase angle and ultimately, out-of-plane displacement may be determined.

  • Patent number: 7081567
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for making a bioreactor comprising a foreign target gene, special selectable markers and Dunaliella Salina as host. It is prepared by the genetic transformation techniques that include introducing a foreign target gene into the cells of Dunaliella Salina and screening the transformed cells of Dunaliella Salina. The bioreactor of the present invention can be used as a safe and cheap production system for proteins of pharmaceutical interest including vaccines, especially oral products, in a large scale, because the cells of Dunaliella Salina are easy of genetic manipulation in preparation of the bioreactor, nontoxic and edible for humans and animals, and harmless to the environment.

  • Patent number: 7064841
Abstract: An arrangement and method of measuring head-media spacing modulation (HMS_Wq) removes the portion of out-of-plane motion caused by disk modes from the dynamic measurements of hard disk surface topography. Employing time-domain measurement techniques, circumferential surface topographical measurements are made for a hard disk surface. A boundary wavelength is determined, and a first partial HMS_Wq value is determined based upon measurements taken at a first disk rotational speed. A second partial HMS_Wq value is determined based upon measurements taken at a second disk rotational speed. The first and second partial HMS_Wq values are combined to provide a complete and accurate HMS_Wq value, taking advantage of the principle that the disk mode location in the spatial domain topography spectrum converted from the measured time-domain data shifts when the disk rotation speed is changed during the measurement.

  • Patent number: 7050617
Abstract: In a method for homogenizing the imaging obtained by a magnetic resonance measurement of a body region, wherein a local antenna of small dimensions and an antenna arrangement arranged outside the body and of larger dimensions are used for imaging, in order to obtain a combined image, a reception profile, referenced to the reception profile of the antenna arrangement of the local antenna, is determined, and the combined image is corrected with the aid of this relative reception profile of the local antenna. A homogenized combined magnetic resonance image is obtained without reducing the signal-to-noise ratio that can be achieved by the local antenna.

  • Patent number: 7050173
Abstract: A method and arrangement for measuring head-media spacing modulation (HMS_Wq) employs a profilometer to measure the surface topography of a disk. A cumulative power spectral density (PSD) distribution is generated from the measured surface topography. Discontinuities and steps are identified in the PSD distribution. The discontinuities and steps are removed to create a corrected PSD distribution. A noise free spectrum is then reconstructed from the corrected PSD distribution.
