  • Publication number: 20030177168
Abstract: A storage area network has a plurality of components, such as host digital data processors and storage devices. A store, e.g., resident on a manager digital data processor, contains one or more objects (or other data constructs) that represent information gathered from the hosts, i.e., scans. Further such objects represent components in the SAN and/or relationships between and among those components. A discover engine or other functionality executing on the manager digital data processor validates information gathered from a selected host concerning a selected component or relationship based on a scan object, if any, that is associated with a component object or relationship object, respectively, corresponding to the selected component or relationship.

  • Publication number: 20030154271
Abstract: Novel storage area networks (SANs) and methods of operation thereof utilize a plurality of hosts coupled via an interconnect with one or more storage units. A manager device, process or other functionality in communication with a plurality of agent processes, devices or other functionality, each of which is associated with a host. The agents identify attributes of (i) their associated hosts, (ii) interconnect to which that host is coupled, and/or (iii) storage units to which that host is coupled via the interconnect. The manager responds to these attributes identified by the agents to manage the SAN. The manager can be implemented on a first digital data processor and the hosts on further digital data processors. These digital data processors can be coupled via a first network, e.g., an IP or other network, to support communications between the manager and the agents. A second network, e.g.

  • Publication number: 20030149769
Abstract: An improved storage area network has a manager digital data processor that includes a first element that maintains a first representation of the SAN, and a second element that maintains a second representation of the SAN. The first element generates notifications of events in the SAN, e.g., addition or removal of components or relationships between components. The second element responds to such notifications by accessing the first representation (e.g., via the first element) and updating the second representation. In the event of a discrepancy between the event notification and either representation, the second element selectively disregards the event notification or rebuilds (recovers) the second representation by copying one or more attributes of the first representation.

  • Publication number: 20030146929
Abstract: A digital data processor of the type used, e.g., in management of a storage area network (SAN), executes a process (a “manager” process) to maintain a representation of the SAN topology or at least an attribute thereof. A graphical output device displays the SAN representation. A further process (a “user interface” process) controls the output device for purposes of displaying that representation. An interface element effects retrieval of the SAN representation, for example, in response to a request from the user interface process. It transmits that representation to the user interface process for display on the graphical output device.

Abstract: An storage area network (SAN) has a manager digital data processor that includes a first element that maintains a first representation of the SAN and a second element that maintains a second representation of the SAN. The first element generates notifications of events in the SAN, e.g., addition or removal of components or relationships between components, and includes with them data pertaining to the event. The second element responds to such notifications and data by updating the second representation. That data is preferably sufficient for the second element to update the second representation without further reference to information contained in the representation.

  • Publication number: 20030149762
Abstract: Improved storage area networks (SANs) maintain a first store containing an internal representation of the SAN and a separate store identifying changes to the SAN. A process executing, for example, in the manager digital data processor of the type described above utilizes the first store to generate a display, e.g., on the operator/administrator console, of the SAN topology, its components and/or the relationships (collectively, “topology”) among those components. The manager responds to information in the second store to identify on the display changes in the SAN. The digital data processor selectively discontinues identifying changes on the topology display. This can be in response, for example, to an operator/administrator request. At the same time, or otherwise in connection therewith, the digital data processor can, moreover, remove the corresponding history information from the second store.

  • Publication number: 20030140391
Abstract: A suit garment that is typically manufactured smaller than the correct size for its intended wearer is made from stretchable material so that the suit fits snugly on the wearer. The suit is constructed from a plurality of panels woven from synthetic or naturally occurring fibers joined to one another along their respective edges, usually along seams that are effectively sealed so that the resulting suit covers the entire body of the wearer, excepting extremities, and extends across the various joints of the wearer that would commonly be expected to flex during diving. The garment is additionally provided with at least one panel in the region of one or more joints of the wearer of the same woven material as the remaining materials. However, the panel that is cut from the material on the bias as opposed to parallel to the warp or weft of the weave of that material. In this manner, an exceedingly elastic suit, at least in the region of the joints of the when the suit is correctly worn, is achieved.

  • Patent number: 6571287
Abstract: An authorizing apparatus for use with a client that connects to a first server in a network includes a second server that authorizes session requests of the client for the first server. Resource allocation data is available to the second server and indicates whether a session may be established between the client and the first server. The second server has information that associates an entity that is associated with one or more clients, and information that associates the second server to a third server that is authoritative for the second server and the associated clients. When a request to establish a session between the client and the first server is received, the second server determines, based on one of the records that is associated with the client, whether the session may be established when the client is associated with the entity. If not, the second server requests a global authorization server to determine whether a session is allowable.

  • Patent number: 6412077
Abstract: A mechanism for performing a disconnect policy involving authorizing a data communication session between a client and a first server is disclosed. The mechanism provides a failover scheme in which local servers record the number of active sessions that they have authorized for a particular user entity. Each user entity is assigned an authoritative server. The authoritative servers maintain global session information for each user entity in which they are assigned. When a local server cannot authorize a session for a particular user entity the local server communicates with the authoritative server to determine whether a session should be established for the user entity. If communication is lost between a local server and an authoritative server, the local server assumes that no other servers have authorized active sessions for the particular user entity. In a similar manner, the authoritative server assumes that the local server has not authorized any active sessions for the particular entity.

  • Patent number: 6412007
Abstract: A mechanism for authorizing a data communication session between a client and a first server is disclosed. When a request is received to establish a session with a particular entity that is associated with the client, it is determined whether authorization of the session can be performed locally at a second server. If it is determined that authorization of the session can be performed locally at the second server then, the first server is informed that the session may be established between the client and the first server for the particular entity. A third server that is associated with the particular entity is identified and once the first server is informed that the session may be established, the third server is informed that the session has been authorized to be established for the particular entity. However, if authorization of the session cannot be performed locally at the second server then, the third server is requested to authorize the session between the client and the first server.

  • Patent number: 6311533
Abstract: A method and apparatus for mechanically reshaping and/or forming textured features in the side wall of metal can bodies in which a can body is mounted on a profiled mandrel and rolled along a second mandrel or rail, which is also profiled. The tools are made from hard material but the second mandrel or rail is resiliently mounted. This mounting has been found to facilitate control of the depth of the profiled features formed in the can body. In particular, the problem of depth variability which will arise due to expansion of the machine and tooling in normal running conditions, or variability in thicknesses in the can body is avoided. Typically, the can body is clamped between complementary unformed regions on the tools during forming so as to prevent wrinkling or localised thinning of the can side wall.
