  • Publication number: 20020053969
Abstract: A system is described which replaces conventional “do not disturb” and “maid service” or “housekeeping” signs in hotel guestrooms. The system comprises means for allowing a hotel guest to choose, from within the hotel room, a message to convey to hotel staff and others such as “do not disturb”. The message is expressed by indicators housed within assemblies located outside of the hotel room, which are visible to passers-by. The system may also convey such messages to a more remote location such as a housekeeping office and the switch may be activated remotely.

  • Publication number: 20020019824
Abstract: A method and system for generically describing and manipulating arbitrary data structures. The method comprises the steps of reading resource-specific information from a resource-specifying source (e.g., an XWL file); specifying the structure comprising the resources; generating hierarchical control information (for example, a tree reflecting the structure); and enabling an access to a desired resource by calling a resource access performer with a respective reference to the resource.

  • Patent number: 6318496
Abstract: A steering booster system for a motor vehicle has an electronic control unit which senses by way of force or torque sensors the amount and direction of forces and torques applied to a manual steering wheel and correspondingly controls, via a transmission arrangement, the steering-force-assisting connection of an electric motor into a steering gear line coupling the manual steering wheel and the steered vehicle wheels. The manufacture of the system is simplified and the controllability of the force transmission between the electric motor and the steering gear line is improved by providing that the transmission arrangement has an electrically switchable clutch for each steering direction, i.e., left or right. The two clutches are arranged such that, when the rotating direction is the same at the input of the transmission arrangement assigned to the electric motor, they in each case cause another rotating direction at the output of the transmission arrangement assigned to the steering gear line.

  • Patent number: 5924056
Abstract: Gravitation in three dimensions is measured using an accelerometer attached to a carrier, a satellite navigation receiver and a computer. The satellite navigation receiver determines a position and attitude, and changes in the position and attitude over time. The computer calculates complete kinematics in inertial space from the timely changes of the determined position and attitude and calculates the gravitation by subtracting the kinematic acceleration from the one observed by the accelerometer. In a preferred embodiment the accelerometer is connected tightly to the carrier. At most, damping elements may be mounted between the accelerometer and the carrier. The accelerometer can be a single accelerometer or a triplet of non-parallel accelerometers. The satellite navigation receiver may be one instrument equipped with three or more antennae or a set of three or more single instruments connected to each other.

  • Patent number: 5897756
Abstract: A device in the form of a flow cell for the chemical or electrolytic surface treatment of plate-shaped articles has first feed elements in the form of tubes with outlet openings for the directed supply of a process liquid to the articles to be treated and, in accordance with the invention, additional, second feed means in the process liquid for the directed introduction of air into the active area of guide elements, which consist of flow gratings, maintained at a distance on both sides of the articles to be treated, with small plates arranged in the manner of a shutter, which are inclined upward and downward in the direction parallel with the main plane of the flat plate articles. This principle of admixing air in connection with the design of the guide elements as flow gratings has the effect that the emerging air bubbles pass the flow gratings in an upward direction and carry the surrounding process liquid along.

  • Patent number: 5775459
Abstract: A rack-and-pinion steering system has a rack which is toothed on two sides and cooperates with two pinions. At least one of the pinions can be axially translated in dependence on forces acting between the rack and that pinion. This axial translation controls a clutch arrangement so that a servomotor continuously rotating in one direction can in each case be nonpositively coupled to one of the pinions or uncoupled from both pinions.

  • Patent number: 5762991
Abstract: A continuous process of producing beer is described. Starch-containing raw materials are disintegrated and are optionally processed to form malt, a wort is produced from the disintegrated and optionally malted raw materials, and the wort is subjected to alcoholic fermentation. In that process all process steps are performed continuously. The mash is initially heated in a reactor system to a temperature of 75.degree. to 85.degree. C. The grain residue is removed from the mash. The wort is subsequently hopped and is heated to a temperature from 105.degree. to 140.degree. C. This is succeeded by a flash evaporation, a removal of the dregs and a cooling of the wort, which is subsequently fermented at 6.degree. to 25.degree. in the presence of a biocatalyst. The fermenting process may be succeeded by a partial or full continuous de-alcoholization of the beer.

  • Patent number: 5715458
Abstract: Data processing apparatus comprises a processor and memory. The processor has a supervisor state including a first set of supervisor service routines for controlling the operation of the data processing apparatus. The memory has a first hash table accessible by the supervisor state for pointing to the first set of supervisor service routines and a second hash table also accessible by the supervisor state for pointing to a second set of supervisor service routines. The data processing apparatus provides table indicating means for indicating whether the first hash table or the second hash table is accessible by the supervisor state. The table indicating means is provided as an index into the first hash table. When this index is accessed, further code is executed which allows access to the second hash table.

  • Patent number: 5711396
Abstract: A rack-and-pinion steering or control system with a servomotor, especially an electric motor, which can be coupled to the rack by way of a mechanical transmission and runs continuously in one direction is provided. The rack is designed over a certain area as a screw which interacts with a recirculating ball sleeve which can be driven in two directions of rotation by the motor. To control the direction of rotation, use is made of normally disengaged clutches which can be controlled as a function of a small displacement of the recirculating ball sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5682959
Abstract: The invention relates to a servo-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system having a helical-toothed rack and an axially movable pinion which interacts therewith and the axial movement of which controls the servomotor. The pinion is mounted on an input shaft in such a manner as to be incapable of rotation with respect to the shaft but axially movable thereon, in order to suppress the transmission of axial forces between the input shaft and the pinion.

  • Patent number: 5655620
Abstract: A servo-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system is provided in which the rack cooperates with a rotatable pinion. The pinion is supported in an eccentrically located opening in a circular disk rotatably mounted by rolling elements on its periphery. Pivoting movement of the pinion controls an hydraulic oil actuated servo motor. The rolling contact bearing of the disk lies in the path of flow of the hydraulic oil for the servo motor. The pinion is supported in a bearing in the opening in the disk and another bearing at an opposite side of the rack and separate from the disk.
