  • Patent number: 7839599
Abstract: A weighted combining scheme exploits information from two servo channels operating in parallel. A timing-based servo module comprises two synchronous servo channels coupled respectively to receive two digital servo signals read from a data tape. Both channels have outputs for an unweighted parameter estimate and for a measure of the channel reliability. A weight computation module provides first and second weight signals using the measures of channel reliability from the servo channels. An offset computation module provides first and second offset terms which are summed with the unweighted parameter estimates. Multiplying nodes receive the unweighted parameter estimates and the weight signals and outputs offset weighted parameter estimates. A summing node receives the offset weighted parameter estimates and outputs a combined offset weighted parameter estimate to a servomechanism.

  • Patent number: 7813077
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for detecting a periodic sequence. A value detector module detects a plurality of values of a periodic sequence. In one embodiment, a transformation module transforms the plurality of values into transformed values. A confinement module confines the values to a limited set of confined values. A correlation module correlates the confined values with a plurality of instances of the periodic sequence. In addition, a selection module selects an instance of the periodic sequence with the highest correlation to the confined values as an observed periodic sequence.

Abstract: A weighted combining scheme exploits information from two servo channels operating in parallel. A timing-based servo module servo module comprises two servo channels coupled respectively to receive two digital servo signals read from a data tape. Both channels have outputs for an unweighted metric and for a measure of the channel reliability. A weight computation module provides first and second weight signals using the measures of channel reliability from the servo channels. A first multiplying node receives a first unweighted metric and a first weight signal and is operable to output a first weighted metric. A second multiplying node receives a second unweighted metric and a second weight signal and outputs a second weighted metric. A summing node receives the first and second weighted metrics and outputs a combined weighted metric to an LPOS word decoder.

  • Patent number: 7769813
Abstract: An email transmission apparatus operates to reduce mis-transmission of an email even if a mistake occurs in the check of a destination address. The email transmission apparatus for transmitting a mail to an address designated as a destination includes a counter for counting return mails which were returned with the designated address as a source in response to transmitted mails. The email transmission apparatus further includes a judging function to obtain, from the counter, a receipt frequency of the return mail with a designated address of a mail to be newly transmitted as a source, and to then judges whether the designated address is an address which may cause mis-transmission on the basis of the receipt frequency. Also provided is a notification function that is responsive to the designated address being judged to be an address which may cause mis-transmission. The counter includes a receipt frequency information database for recording a receipt frequency of the past return mails.

  • Patent number: 7605992
Abstract: A tape drive system which includes the ability to reliably reproduce LPOS information even if both of the servo channels of the tape drive system could not detect the LPOS information due to defects. The system recognizes that an LPOS sequence is sequentially incremented by one if a tape is moving in a forward direction and decremented by one if the tape is moving in a backward direction. This sequential property of the LPOS information lends itself to LPOS prediction, where the LPOS prediction is the previous LPOS value plus one if the tape is moving forward and the previous LPOS value minus one if the tape is moving backward. Even if the LPOS words from the two servo channels are both bad, but not all of the bits in the LPOS word are bad. The system uses the remaining good bits from the two servo channels to verify all of the bits of the LPOS prediction word.

  • Publication number: 20090219645
Abstract: A method to decode linear position (“LPOS”) information encoded in a sequential information storage medium, by detecting each of one or a plurality of sequential first LPOS servo patterns encoded in a first servo band using a first servo sensor in communication with a first servo channel. While detecting that one or a plurality of first LPOS servo patterns, the method fails to detect (n) second LPOS servo patterns encoded in a second servo band. The method determines a value for (n), and then syncs the first servo channel with the second servo channel using that value of (n).

  • Publication number: 20090187852
Abstract: To provide a technique for facilitating the management of an attachment file attached to an electronic mail. A client apparatus acquires attachment position information in a text of the electronic mail and stores it associated with an identifier of the electronic mail, in receiving the electronic mail with attachment file. Upon receiving an instruction for displaying the electronic mail from the user, the client apparatus arranges a graphic representing the attachment file of the electronic mail on a child screen that displays the reduced screen of a parent screen that displays the electronic mail based on the corresponding attachment position information, and displays the child screen together with the parent screen.

  • Publication number: 20090089524
Abstract: A storage area, among multiple storage areas, which meets a predetermined requirement is determined to be a target for access. In a controller for controlling a multi-tiered storage subsystem, the following components operate under the control of a file write unit and a file read unit. First, a list acquiring unit obtains a list of tiers that can meet file access requirements. A requisite energy calculating unit calculates an additional energy amount necessary to satisfy file access requirements for each tier, an allowable energy calculating unit calculates an allowable additional energy amount, and a path retrieving unit determines a path to a target tier based on the energy amounts. An identifier acquiring unit obtains a file identifier, and an access point generating unit determines a file access point based on the path and the file identifier. A method for controlling a multi-tiered storage subsystem is also described.

  • Publication number: 20080223968
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for checking tape reel motion. A control module directs a leading servo to apply torque to a leading reel and a trailing servo to apply torque to a trailing reel, wherein the control module directs the leading servo to apply an initial positive torque in a tape motion direction and directs the trailing servo to apply an initial negative torque counter to the tape motion direction. If there is no change in an angular position of the leading and trailing reels, the control module incrementally sums a first incremental positive torque to the leading torque to increase the leading torque and a second incremental positive torque to the trailing torque until there is a change in the angular position of the leading and trailing reels and/or until the torques exceed torque limits.
