  • Publication number: 20050030661
Abstract: In a tape having separate servo bands of patterns positioned laterally across the tape, the patterns of a separate servo band have at least one differentiating characteristic with respect to patterns of another of the separate servo bands. The differentiating characteristic allows identification of the separate servo bands. For example, the patterns of a separate servo band have differing azimuthal orientations of detectable transitions with respect to another servo band, such as being laterally inverted. In another, variations in the width of gaps of patterns are made with respect to another servo band. In another, variations are made in the number of the detectable transitions of patterns with respect to the patterns of another servo band.

  • Patent number: 6822415
Abstract: A electric motor control device is provided for controlling an electric motor which actuates a movable member of a machine through a transmitting mechanism. When a torque command is given as motion command signal (9) to servo device (3), servo device (3) sends input torque signal (12) corresponding to motion command signal (9) to electric motor (5), which is energized. Movable member (7) is thus moved, producing vibrations. Servo device (3) outputs input torque signal (11) equivalent to input torque signal (12), and input torque signal (11) and rotational speed signal (10) are stored in memory device (2). Analyzing device (1) analyzes the frequencies of input torque signal (11) and rotational speed signal (10) according to an FFT, and outputs analytical result (14).

  • Publication number: 20040080849
Abstract: A method and system for rewriting data on a tape when an error occurs during an initial write operation. When the initial write error occurs, the data is rewritten at a location that is a pre-defined block gap distance from the last valid write location on the tape. By measuring the length of the pre-defined block gap distance, the cause or causes of the write error or errors are known. Thus, the pre-defined block gap not only ensures that the data is not re-written in a no-write zone of the tape, due to the zone known to be error prone, but a historical record of past write errors is logged based on the length of the block gaps.

  • Patent number: 6721126
Abstract: A method and position control for a servo system for positioning a head laterally with respect to defined servo tracks. The servo system comprises a servo sensor and detector for sensing lateral position of the head and a compound actuator having a fine actuator portion and a coarse actuator portion. The position control provides position indications for the coarse actuator portion, which may comprise a table relating predetermined nominal lateral position indications to the defined servo tracks. The position control positions the coarse actuator portion at an estimated position with respect to the defined servo tracks, and responds to the servo sensor to determine which servo track is closest to the estimated position. The position control sets the coarse actuator portion position indication to the predetermined nominal lateral position indication of the closest defined servo track, e.g., by looking it up in the table. This thereby corrects the indication of the position of the coarse actuator portion.

  • Publication number: 20030139824
Abstract: When a position/speed feedback changes while a control system for driving a feed axis uses an integration gain during a shaft stopping, the control system goes unstable to cause a torque instruction to vibrate or diverge. In addition, only a single, narrow-range feed speed can be accommodated to find an out-of-range speed to be insufficient or excessive in compensation effects. After detecting the movement reversal of a feed axis, a control loop is modeled, a virtual internal model computing unit (21) using a constant separate from a constant used in a control loop is configured, a virtual torque instruction (22) computed by this computing unit (21) is added to a torque instruction (16) for driving the feed axis, this adding is terminated when the virtual torque instruction (22) reaches a specified value, and a value (25) of an integrator in a virtual internal model at the adding termination is added to the integrator (14) corresponding to a position/speed feedback loop.

  • Patent number: 6580581
Abstract: A servo system and method position a head laterally with respect to magnetic tape longitudinal defined servo bands arranged in a longitudinally shifted pattern for identification, and separated by data tracks. A servo controller responds to a loss of lateral position, sensing an estimated longitudinal position of the magnetic tape. If the estimated longitudinal position is within a predetermined distance of an end of the tape, the servo controller operates a drive to continuously move the tape away from the sensed end. The servo controller senses a home lateral position sensor to determine whether a compound actuator is within a predetermined distance of the edge of the magnetic tape. If so, it operates the coarse actuator portion of the compound actuator to move laterally away from the edge of the magnetic tape; else, to move toward the edge.

  • Patent number: 6532128
Abstract: A system and method for precisely registering and synchronizing data sets on a recording media having a prerecorded servo pattern. The recording media is subject to continuing movement for reading and/or writing the data sets, interrupted by stopping at the end of a selected data set and restarting. During the continuing movement of the recording media, a detector coupled to the servo system continuously reads linear position registration data modulated into the prerecorded servo pattern. An interpolator interpolates the prerecorded registration data to provide precision registration information for the data sets. Upon the drive stopping the recording media, then back hitching the media and the movement restarting, selected read and interpolated registration information is provided.

  • Patent number: 6278571
Abstract: Disclosed are a method and a detector for adaptively detecting servo gaps in a timing based servo pattern prerecorded on a variable velocity media. The timing based servo pattern has groups of repeated pairs of non-parallel transition stripes arranged in bursts, the bursts separated by servo gaps whose length is variable. A servo system sensor senses the transition stripes in the longitudinal direction of the media. A group interval detector coupled to the sensor detects the timing interval between the same slope transition stripes of two sequential groups of bursts. A divider divides the detected group timing interval by a predetermined divisor to provide a divided timing interval gap detection threshold. A sequential stripe interval detector coupled to the sensor measures the timing interval between stripes, and a comparator compares the divided timing interval and the timing interval, identifying a servo gap upon the measured timing interval at least equaling the gap threshold.
