  • Publication number: 20080117539
Abstract: A magnetic tape cartridge including magnetic tape with servo information is provided. The servo information comprises a plurality of parallel longitudinal servo bands that lie between a plurality of longitudinal data bands. The plurality of servo bands include odd servo bands and even servo bands, wherein each of the odd servo bands lie between each of the even servo bands. Each of the plurality servo bands include a plurality of frames, wherein each frame includes a plurality of bursts of transition stripes, and each burst having a first transition stripe. The first transition stripe of each burst of each the odd servo band is longitudinally shifted from the first transition stripe of each burst of each even servo band by a substantially equal distance, D, such that servo information of the odd servo bands is interleaved with the servo information from the even servo bands.

  • Publication number: 20080109523
Abstract: An email transmission apparatus operates to reduce mis-transmission of an email even if a mistake occurs in the check of a destination address. The email transmission apparatus for transmitting a mail to an address designated as a destination includes a counter for counting return mails which were returned with the designated address as a source in response to transmitted mails. The email transmission apparatus further includes a judging function to obtain, from the counter, a receipt frequency of the return mail with a designated address of a mail to be newly transmitted as a source, and to then judges whether the designated address is an address which may cause mis-transmission on the basis of the receipt frequency. Also provided is a notification function that is responsive to the designated address being judged to be an address which may cause mis-transmission. The counter includes a receipt frequency information database for recording a receipt frequency of the past return mails.

  • Patent number: 7364106
Abstract: Disclosed are a system, a method, and an article of manufacture to provide for the detection and compensation of tape breakage in a tape drive. The invention operates by simultaneously monitoring the tape reel rotation direction and the ratio of rotation between the tape reels. If the rotation direction is not the same for both reels, then tape breakage is indicated and reel rotation ceases. Tape breakage is also detected if the tape reel angular rotation ratio between the supply and take up reels is not within a specified tape reel ratio range. The tape reel angular rotation ratio is detected by simultaneously measuring the angular rotation of each tape reel in a specified time period and then calculating the ratio. The present invention detects the tape reel angular rotation ratio and if tape reel angular rotation ratio is outside of the specified tape reel ratio range, tape breakage is indicated and reel rotation ceases.

  • Publication number: 20080055759
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for detecting a periodic sequence. A value detector module detects a plurality of values of a periodic sequence. In one embodiment, a transformation module transforms the plurality of values into transformed values. A confinement module confines the values to a limited set of confined values. A correlation module correlates the confined values with a plurality of instances of the periodic sequence. In addition, a selection module selects an instance of the periodic sequence with the highest correlation to the confined values as an observed periodic sequence.

  • Patent number: 7280307
Abstract: A magnetic tape drive, having a compound servo actuator, reduces the possibility of overshoots of servo elements when a tape cartridge is loaded, thereby reducing servo failures. The coarse motor is activated, then deactivated when the servo elements locate a servo pattern on the tape. After initialization of a DAC offset in the servo controller to 0, the position of the fine actuator is read. The fine actuator is enabled, with a DAC input of 0 and, after a short wait, the position is again read. The new DAC offset equals the initial DAC offset plus the difference between the two positions. If the difference is less than a predetermined threshold, the servo controller may obtain a lock on the servo signals and commence tracking. If the difference is not less, the process is repeated, with the DAC offset being adjusted each time, until the difference is less than a predetermined threshold.

  • Patent number: 7187145
Abstract: Control parameters can be easily and precisely adjusted, the response of a motor controller can be highly accurately made at high speed and a vibration can be suppressed to a low level. Even when an inertia is varied during an operation or a viscous friction is high, the inertia or a viscous friction coefficient can be identified by a control parameter adjusting unit (18) for performing a calculation on the basis of a torque command Tref and the speed Vfb of a motor. As a result, control parameters can be easily and precisely adjusted and the response of a motor controller can be highly accurately carried out at high speed and a vibration can be suppressed to a low level.

  • Patent number: 7177114
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for the velocity proportional clocking of time base servo tape storage devices. The apparatus, system, and method allow the velocity of time base servo tape storage devices to be adjusted and maintained by adjusting the frequency of a clock. In one embodiment, a velocity command is received and the clock signal frequency is varied in response to the command. A feedback control signal may then be produced to control the velocity of a time base servo device in response to the clock signal frequency, the feedback control signal being used to vary the velocity of a servo motor. In one embodiment, the velocity of the servo motor varies directly proportionate to the clock signal frequency.

  • Patent number: 7102846
Abstract: In a tape having separate servo bands of patterns positioned laterally across the tape, the patterns of a separate servo band have at least one differentiating characteristic with respect to patterns of another of the separate servo bands. The differentiating characteristic allows identification of the separate servo bands. For example, the patterns of a separate servo band have differing azimuthal orientations of detectable transitions with respect to another servo band, such as being laterally inverted. In another, variations in the width of gaps of patterns are made with respect to another servo band. In another, variations are made in the number of the detectable transitions of patterns with respect to the patterns of another servo band.

  • Patent number: 7050862
Abstract: When a position/speed feedback changes while a control system for driving a feed axis uses an integration gain during a shaft stopping, the control system goes unstable to cause a torque instruction to vibrate or diverge. In addition, only a single, narrow-range feed speed can be accommodated to find an out-of-range speed to be insufficient or excessive in compensation effects. After detecting the movement reversal of a feed axis, a control loop is modeled, a virtual internal model computing unit (21) using a constant separate from a constant used in a control loop is configured, a virtual torque instruction (22) computed by this computing unit (21) is added to a torque instruction (16) for driving the feed axis, this adding is terminated when the virtual torque instruction (22) reaches a specified value, and a value (25) of an integrator in a virtual internal model at the adding termination is added to the integrator (14) corresponding to a position/speed feedback loop.
