  • Patent number: 9573843
Abstract: Described herein are various polymer-covered glass and glass-ceramic articles that exhibit improved adhesion between the polymer and the glass or glass-ceramic, along with methods for their manufacture and use. The improved articles generally include a glass or glass-ceramic substrate, a surface-roughened coating disposed on at least a portion of an edge of the glass or glass-ceramic substrate, and a polymer covering disposed on at least a portion of the surface-roughened coating. The surface-roughened coatings beneficially allow the polymer coverings to adhere better to the edge surfaces of the glass or glass-ceramic substrates relative to similar or identical articles that lack the surface-roughened coating.

  • Publication number: 20160381585
Abstract: A feeder terminal comprises backhaul communication circuitry connecting a communications network via a wireless backhaul, and providing an access base station with wireless backhaul access. Backhaul information circuitry determines congestion information relating to the wireless backhaul and communication circuitry enables communication with an access base station and provides the congestion information to the access base station. In response to a demand message from the access base station comprising quality of service requirements, the communication circuitry forwards the demand message to the communications network. Additionally, an access base station comprises communication circuitry enabling communication with a feeder terminal. The communication circuitry provides a quality of service demand message to the feeder terminal based on a quality of service requirement and receives congestion information relating to the wireless backhaul from the feeder terminal.

  • Patent number: 9529155
Abstract: Gradient index (GRIN) lens chips and associated small form factor optical arrays for optical connections, and related fiber optic connectors are disclosed. By aligning GRIN lenses within a GRIN lens chip, a more precise and reliable alignment may be achieved with respect to optical fibers than if a single conventional ferrule is utilized to align and secure both GRIN lenses and optical fibers. The GRIN lens chip may include a GRIN lens received and thereby aligned within a groove disposed between a fiber end and a terminal end of a GRIN lens holder body. The optical fibers may also be received and thereby aligned within a groove of a ferrule body. In this manner, when the GRIN lens chip containing the GRIN lenses is aligned with a ferrule body containing the optical fibers, then the GRIN lenses may be precisely located relative to the optical fibers.

  • Patent number: 9504440
Abstract: An electronic catheter stethoscope measures and analyzes acoustic fields and dynamic pressure variations in the gaseous or liquid fluid inside a conventional medical catheter that is positioned in a patient's urologic, digestive, reproductive, cardiovascular, neurological or pulmonary system. Measurement transducers are installed in a housing connectable to multiple preselected medical catheters. The transducers detect bodily functions that are transmitted to the preselected catheter from within the body. The transducers, housing, electrical interface and signal processing electronics are positioned outside the body.

  • Publication number: 20160333803
Abstract: A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a switching period module and at least one of a valve lift control module and a start-stop control module. The switching period module determines a switching period that elapses as a valve lift actuator of an engine switches between a first valve lift position and a second valve lift position that is different than the first lift position. The switching period begins when a measured position of the valve lift actuator corresponds to the first lift position and the switching period ends when the measured position of the valve lift actuator corresponds to the second lift position. The valve lift control module controls the valve lift actuator based on the switching period. The start-stop control module determines whether to automatically stop the engine based on the switching period.

  • Patent number: 9485649
Abstract: A wireless mesh network includes a plurality of wireless devices and a gateway organized in a multi hop mesh topology. Each wireless device maintains and reports radio statistics to the gateway, and also reports battery conditions of its power source. The device manager communicates with the gateway and provides an alert indicating existence of a pinch point within the mesh network based upon the radio statistics. When a low battery condition is reported by a device, the device manager determines whether loss of that device is a pinch point or will cause a pinch point, and provides a low battery alert prioritized based upon the pinch point analysis.

  • Patent number: 9470154
Abstract: A method of controlling an engine includes initiating a transition from homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) to spark ignited (SI) combustion mode of the engine under low load. The method includes commanding an exhaust valve actuator to increase lift of the exhaust valve to maximize expulsion of combustion chamber contents. The method also includes injecting into the combustion chamber sufficient amount of fuel after the lift of the exhaust valve was increased to generate substantially stoichiometric air-fuel ratio of the gas mixture contained in the chamber. The method also includes igniting the gas mixture after the fuel was injected into the combustion chamber to maximize combustion of the gas mixture. The method additionally includes commanding an intake camshaft phaser to change the position of the intake camshaft to a position configured for predetermined throttled SI combustion mode after the gas mixture was ignited to maximize operating efficiency of the engine.

  • Patent number: 9296075
Abstract: A die case extractor and method for extracting a die case from a die bed. The die case extractor is engaged with the die case which is disposed in the die bed. The die case extractor is engaged by a pulling device, such as a ram. When the pulling device is retracted from the die bed, the die case extractor pulls on the die case, thereby extracting the die case from the die bed. Preferably, the die case extractor includes a bracing piece that is engaged with the die case. The die case extractor also preferably includes a member, such as a screw, which is engaged with the bracing piece. A holder is retained on the member and is engaged by the ram. The ram is then retracted generally away from the die bed, thereby pulling on the die case and extracting the die case from the die bed. Preferably, multiple die case extractors can be used simultaneously to extract a plurality of die cases in a single pulling action of the ram.

  • Publication number: 20160024687
Abstract: There is provided a substrate with a lower growth confinement layer disposed thereon. An upper growth confinement layer is disposed above and vertically separated from the lower growth confinement layer. A planar lateral growth channel is provided between the upper and lower growth confinement layers with a vertical separation between the layers along the lateral growth channel. A germanium material growth seed of amorphous silicon is disposed at a site adjacent to the lateral growth channel. The upper growth confinement layer and the lower growth confinement layer each prohibits crystalline germanium material nucleation on the upper and lower growth confinement layers during exposure to GeH4 gas, for crystalline germanium material growth initiation in the lateral growth channel only at the growth seed site. Crystalline germanium material fills the lateral growth channel. A growth channel outlet provides formed crystalline germanium material from the lateral growth channel.
