  • Patent number: 8951895
Abstract: Improved complementary doping methods are described herein. The complementary doping methods generally involve inducing a first and second chemical reaction in at least a first and second portion, respectively, of a dopant source, which has been disposed on a thin film of a semiconductor or semimetal material. The chemical reactions result in the introduction of an n-type dopant, a p-type dopant, or both from the dopant source to each of the first and second portions of the thin film of the semiconductor or semimetal. Ultimately, the methods produce at least one n-type and at least one p-type region in the thin film of the semiconductor or semimetal.

  • Patent number: 8919101
Abstract: An exhaust system is provided. The exhaust system includes a first sensor that senses a level of nitrous oxide (NOx) in exhaust gas and generates a first sensor signal. A second sensor senses a level of ammonia (NH3) in the exhaust gas and generates a second sensor signal. A control module receives the first sensor signal and the second sensor signal, determines a desired reductant dosage based on the first sensor signal and the second sensor signal, and generates an injector control signal based on the desired reductant dosage.

  • Publication number: 20140352655
Abstract: A method of controlling an engine includes initiating a transition from homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) to spark ignited (SI) combustion mode of the engine under low load. The method includes commanding an exhaust valve actuator to increase lift of the exhaust valve to maximize expulsion of combustion chamber contents. The method also includes injecting into the combustion chamber sufficient amount of fuel after the lift of the exhaust valve was increased to generate substantially stoichiometric air-fuel ratio of the gas mixture contained in the chamber. The method also includes igniting the gas mixture after the fuel was injected into the combustion chamber to maximize combustion of the gas mixture. The method additionally includes commanding an intake camshaft phaser to change the position of the intake camshaft to a position configured for predetermined throttled SI combustion mode after the gas mixture was ignited to maximize operating efficiency of the engine.

  • Patent number: 8904038
Abstract: An apparatus, method and system to enable dynamic replication of Web servers across a wide area in response to access patterns by Web clients as well as in response to customer requests. The method for dynamically replicating one or more parent nodes on a network in response to a user request by a policy manager. The policy manager transmits the user request to an event module. The event module transmits the user request to a data consistency module, wherein the data consistency module maintains integrity of the data on the parent node. The event system communicates with a resource management module to ensure proper utilization of network resources, and transmits the routing request to a request routing module for appropriately balancing the network load. The request routing module is capable of providing optimal routing based on the network resources.

  • Publication number: 20140297147
Abstract: Vehicle mass is estimated in a hybrid motor vehicle. Upon determination of a significant change in vehicle mass, adjustments are made to control of the regenerative braking systems and to energy storage levels to improve fuel efficiency. Upon determination of an increase in vehicle mass, the amount of braking force applied to the vehicle by the regenerative braking system in response to brake pedal movement is increased in order to capture more braking energy before friction braking is used.

  • Publication number: 20140227716
Abstract: Methods of determining levels of activity of bacteria in the lungs of patients are described, in which levels of a marker of a bacterial iron scavenging processes (for example, siderophores) and levels of a secreted bacterial protein are measured over time. Changes in the measured levels over time allow levels of bacterial activity to be determined, and exacerbations of bacterial infection to be predicted and/or monitored. Additional markers may also be used. The methods of the invention may also be used for monitoring effectiveness of antibiotic treatment of lung infection. The invention is particularly useful for monitoring P. aeruginosa levels in lungs of cystic fibrosis patients. Kits for use in the methods are also described.

  • Publication number: 20140206748
Abstract: This disclosure describes markers that can identify patients at risk of developing castration-resistant prostate cancer. The markers, and analyses that use the markers, can be used by health professionals to guide treatment decisions by, for example, helping to evaluate the likelihood that a patient will respond to or develop resistance to prostate cancer therapies targeted to the androgen receptor. Thus, in some cases, methods described herein may be used to identify subjects under treatment for prostate cancer as at risk for developing castration-resistant prostate cancer. Such an evaluation may indicate that a change in prescribed therapy is appropriate. In some of these instances, the change may involve modifying the subject's treatment regimen to include administration of a pharmaceutical composition effective for treating castration-resistant prostate cancer before resistance to androgen receptor-based treatments develops.
