  • Patent number: 6620899
Abstract: This invention pertains to olefins having a terminally disposed fluorocyclobutyl ring bearing a sulfonyl, sulfonic acid or sulfonate salt, a process for the production thereof, and polymers, especially ionomers, formed therefrom. The invention further pertains to ionically conductive compositions formed by the combination of a liquid and the ionomer of the invention, and electrochemical devices such as electrodes, sensors, and solid polymer electrolytes comprising those conductive compositions. The polymers of the invention arc useful in the formation of films and coatings with high chemical resistance and good physical properties. The ionomers of the invention are useful in electrochemical applications, particularly in lithium batteries. The polymeric compositions of the invention are useful for strong acid catalysis, such as Friedel-Crafts alkylation.

  • Patent number: 6620895
Abstract: Polyethylenes made from ethylene and a series of &agr;-olefins using a catalyst that copolymerizes ethylene and &agr;-olefins usually have excellent melt processing characteristics, especially in uses where high zero shear viscosity and low high shear viscosity are desirable. These polyethylenes are preferably made by forming the &agr;-olefins in situ from ethylene during the polymerization process. The polyethylenes are especially useful in blow molding, extrusion or extruded blown film processes.

  • Publication number: 20030162939
Abstract: Immersion precipitation of solutions having 15%-30% (w/w) and various molecular weights of the emeraldine base form of polyaniline in polar aprotic solvents are shown to form integrally skinned asymmetric membranes and fibers having skin layers <1 &mgr;m thick which exhibit improved rates of gas transport while preserving good selectivity. These membranes can be further transformed by an acid doping process after fabrication to achieve excellent permeation rates and high selectivities for particular gas separations. Prior to the use of concentrated EB solutions, the formation of integrally skinned asymmetric membranes was not possible, since films and fibers made from <5% w/w polyaniline solutions were found to disintegrate during the IP process.

  • Publication number: 20030162364
Abstract: A method of forming shallow trench isolation (STI) in a substrate. A shield layer is formed on part of the substrate. Using the shield layer as a mask, part of the substrate is removed to form a trench in the substrate. A first insulation layer is formed in part of the trench, where the trench remains an opening. The first insulation layer is partially etched back to leave a remaining first insulation layer at the bottom of the trench and to expose the sidewall of the trench above the remaining first insulation layer. The trench is filled up with a second insulation layer extending onto the shield layer. A planarization is performed on the second insulation layer, where the shield layer serves as a stop layer for the planarization. Thus, a void-free trench isolation area is formed in a substrate.

  • Publication number: 20030149182
Abstract: Blends of two or more polyethylenes are made by reacting ethylene with an oligomerization catalyst that forms &agr;-olefins, and two polymerization catalysts, one of which under the process conditions copolymerizes ethylene and &agr;-olefins, and the other of which under process conditions does not readily copolymerize ethylene and &agr;-olefins.
