  • Patent number: 6199903
Abstract: In a method for triggering a two-stage air bag generator in a motor vehicle, an acceleration signal is measured, processed and evaluated with respect to the accident severity according to a first evaluation process. As a function of the determined accident severity, a triggering decision is made at least for the triggering of a first stage of the gas generator. At least until a defined time period T1 has elapsed since the ignition of the first stage, the acceleration signal is evaluated according to a second evaluation process with respect to the accident severity before, on the basis of defined triggering conditions, as a function of the determined accident severity, a triggering decision is made for igniting the second stage of the gas generator.

  • Patent number: 6164568
Abstract: A device for applying free-flowing material to a movable substrate (1), especially for intermittent application of liquid adhesive. At least one supply channel (46) feeds free-flowing material and at least one nozzle unit (8) with at least one output channel is connected with the supply channel (46) and ends in an output orifice for delivering material. A valve mechanism interrupts the flow of material and includes a movable valve body (14) and a valve seat (44). The valve body (14) interacts with the valve seat (44) in such a way that the flow of material is interrupted by movement of the valve body (14) to a closed position and released by movement into an open position. The valve body (14) comes into contact with the valve seat (44) to interrupt the flow of material through a movement contrary to the direction of flow of the material.

  • Patent number: 6063245
Abstract: A procedure and apparatus for the application of carbon layers using reactive magnetron sputtering is described. The process includes sputtering of at least two targets made of carbon in a reactive atmosphere with a pulsed energy feed. During a pattern period of the pulses all targets (magnetrons) are once switched on as an anode and at least one target is switched as an anode at all times Various embodiments include detection and limitation of the "microarcs"; executing of regeneration processes according to fixed predetermined time intervals for at least 5 seconds. In one embodiment a microarc is detected on a magnetron and if a next pulse-off time is more than a selected time period away, then the magnetron is connected to a positive pole of the power supply.

  • Patent number: 6019876
Abstract: A method and apparatus for depositing an underlayer and/or a magnetic thin film layer on a data storage disk are described. The sputtering power is supplied in the form of pulses during the application of the underlayer and/or magnetic storage to periodically ignite the plasma and increase the charge-carrier density in the sputtering chamber. The repetition frequency and parameters for the pulses and pauses between pulses are adjusted to achieve a desired nominal value for the coercive field strength of the magnetic layer. Preferably the repetition frequency of the power switching is from 10 to 80 kHz and the ratio of pulse length to pulse pause is within 5:1 to 1:5.

  • Patent number: 5964814
Abstract: The invention relates to a steering angle adjusting device with an operating element for adjusting the steering angle as a function of a corresponding operating element actuating parameter. According to the invention, steering angle adjustment takes place as a function of the operating element actuating parameter with a sensitivity that decreases with decreasing coefficient of friction and/or the maximum adjustable value of the operating element actuating value decreases with a decreasing coefficient of friction and/or an increasing lengthwise speed of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5883253
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the prepn of ortho-sulfocarboxylic acids, which comprises: a) in a first reaction step, diazotizing an aromatic o-aminosulfonic acid in the presence of an acid and nitrite in water, in an organic solvent or in a mixture thereof, to an o-diazonium sulfonate, and, b) in a second reaction step, reacting the o-diazonium sulfonate in the presence of a palladium catalyst in water, in an organic solvent or in a mixture thereof, with carbon monoxide, under overpressure, to an aromatic o-sulfocarboxylic acid. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of sulfonylureas using o-sulfocarboxylic acids as intermediates. Thus, 4-methoxyaniline-2-sulfonic acid was diazotized and treated with CO to give 97% 4-methoxybenzoic acid 2-sulfonic acid.

  • Patent number: 5845735
Abstract: A control element arrangement is disclosed for controlling a motor vehicle without conventional pedals and steering wheel. Two control elements are provided which can be operated independently of one another, in which case at least the longitudinal speed and/or at least the steering angle can be controlled optionally by operating one or the other control element. As a result, with respect to the longitudinal and/or the lateral dynamic control, on the one hand, a redundancy is created which increases the operating reliability and, on the other hand, the control-comfort-increasing possibility is created of being able to guide the vehicle alternately by means of one or the other control element.

  • Patent number: 5836416
Abstract: Setting-element arrangement controls the longitudinal speed and/or the steering angle of a motor vehicle. More specifically, a user-actuable setting element which, during forward motion, when actuated in a respectively first actuation direction, brings about a change of the parameter controlled thereby in a first change direction and, when actuated out of the position of rest into a respectively second actuation direction which is opposite the first, brings about a change of this parameter in a second change direction opposite to the first. In such a setting-element arrangement, the assignment of the two change directions of the longitudinal speed and/or of the steering angle to the respectively first or second actuation direction of the setting element is inverted, during reverse motion, in relation to that during forward motion. The driver's intuitive association of a setting-element actuation corresponding to the desired dynamic vehicle reaction is thus maintained, even during reverse motion.

  • Patent number: 5827956
Abstract: A measuring wheel detects forces and moments between the rim and axle of a vehicle wheel with measuring sensors between the rim face and a wheel flange apparatus transmits the energy and data to a measurement evaluation and processing system on the vehicle. The wheel flange and/or the front of the rim consists of a fiber compound, while the apparatus on the wheel for transmitting energy and data are fitted on the inside of the rim bed holding the vehicle tire and extends essentially over its circumference. Thus the static properties and dynamic behavior of the measuring wheel during travel correspond to the greatest degree to the original wheel. Effects which falsify the measurements such as increased wheel weight and the like do not arise.
