  • Publication number: 20020063983
Abstract: A data storage device includes a disc stack, a rotary actuator having an arm coupled to a transducer head, and support structure for receiving the arm with a reduced incidence of sliding contact therewith. The arm is separated from the support means, and then moved so that the head is above a disc surface for storing data. After the disc stack reaches its nominal rotation speed, the head is loaded so that it can transfer data. During periods of non-activity, the head is raised (unloaded) again and the arm is placed on the support means. This reduces a risk of damage in the presence of shocks while minimizing particle generation induced by friction.

  • Patent number: 6345549
Abstract: An actuator for adjustment of a flexible line such as a cable or rope. The actuator includes a screw threaded spindle and a cooperatively engaging adjustment member having a nut with an internal screw thread that is in threaded engagement with an external screw thread of the spindle. The adjustment member is rotatable relative to the spindle to cause axial movement of the spindle. A turning block or pulley is mounted on an end of the spindle for rotation on an axis extending transversely with respect to the axis of the spindle and the flexible line is retained in relation to the spindle. The flexible line is passed around the turning block or pulley for adjustment of the flexible line by axial movement of the spindle.

  • Publication number: 20010043352
Abstract: A flexible and extensible virtual printer architecture is provided. According to one aspect of the present invention, a mechanism is provided for driving multiple heterogeneous presentation devices. A presentation job is received on behalf of a presentation device, the presentation job includes a data stream which contains source data in the form of text, image, graphics, and/or other embedded objects. The source data is then reduced to an intermediate format. Based upon the intermediate format and control information associated with the data stream, device-specific data and device-specific control information are generated for the presentation device. Finally, the presentation device is driven by providing the device-specific data and device-specific control information to the presentation device.

  • Publication number: 20010022471
Abstract: A system for controlling air bag deployment in vehicles includes the capability of accommodating varying inductants values in the air bag circuit. Wire harnesses that couple air bag components have varying characteristics, such as length, which affect the inductants value of the circuit. The inventive arrangement utilizes charge and discharge times of at least one capacitor for measuring the inductants of a particular circuit. The system includes a controller that accommodates the inductants by introducing an appropriate delay in the firing circuit signal to operate the air bag.
