  • Patent number: 5949605
Abstract: An adaptive feedforward method of canceling and calibrating harmonic disturbances in a magnetic disk drive storage system includes expressing harmonic disturbances to the system as d(t) and expressing an output of the system as y(t). A control signal u(t) is used to cancel the harmonic disturbance d(t), where u(t) is the estimated value of d(t) such that u(t) is an estimated value of d(t). Estimated coefficients a.sub.i and b.sub.i of u(t) are updated using the derivatives of the estimated coefficients and a constant adaptation gain g.sub.i for the ith frequency component of the disturbance. The values of estimated coefficients are implemented in real time. The control signal u(t) is combined with the system output signal y(t) to cancel u(t) from y(t). The functions representing d(t), y(t), and u(t) are included in drive code for the system.

  • Patent number: 5917672
Abstract: A data recording disk file includes rotatable disks with concentric data tracks thereon. The data disk file includes servo information recorded on at least one of the disks, at least one head for reading the servo information during rotation of the disk, and a voice coil motor (VCM) attached to the head for positioning the head relative to the data tracks. A servo is driven by signals read from the head to control the VCM. The servo includes a processor employing an estimator model for estimating the parameters of the VCM and for generating, from the estimated parameters and the servo information, a digital control signal. The digital control signal is converted to an analog control signal. The control signal is applied to a power amplifier which generates an input current for use by the VCM. The processor provides solely a single estimator model which operates in both saturated mode and linear mode depending on the magnitude of the digital PES.

  • Patent number: 5875689
Abstract: A vehicle parking brake operating mechanism having an arcuately movable brake handle arcuately rotatably mounted on a pin secured to a fixed mounting bracket, a cable reel assembly having a reel section attached to the brake handle and a hub section arcuately rotated on a sleeve bushing which is received on the pin in slidable but non-rotatable relation therewith, and a cable take-up spring in the cable reel assembly reel section having one end attached to that reel section and the other end attached to the a portion of the sleeve bushing which extends through the cable reel section as well as through the cable reel assembly hub section. The bushing is of lesser specific gravity than the pin and primarily withstands only bearing loads from the hub section to the pin and torsional loads exerted by the take-up spring. The pin is subjected to cantilever loads as well as bearing loads. The pin is preferably made of steel while the bushing is made of a suitable plastic or light metal alloy or powdered metal.

  • Patent number: 5861606
Abstract: A busbar supplies current to an electrically resistant area heating device, such as an array of fine closely-spaced wires, which extends over a window, e.g. a laminated vehicle windscreen. The busbar is arranged to turn a corner, e.g. a corner of the window, by providing a separate corner piece of busbar strip which is electrically connected to adjacent lengths of straight busbar strip. This facilitates concealment of the busbar, as is desirable for vehicle windscreens, especially when the corner piece is shaped to suit the corner of the window. Electrical connection of the corner piece to the adjacent lengths of busbar strip is achieved by use of a solder of low melting point, which melts on autoclaving of the window.

  • Patent number: 5828882
Abstract: An event notification facility includes an interface by which programs register for notification of an event. When registering, each program identifies a type of event and a mechanism by which the program is to be notified if and when an event of the identified type occurs. At the program's option, it can request that it be notified "last," i.e. after all other programs have been notified of the event. The event notification facility also includes a means for storing the registration requests and for associating each registration request with a type of event. Once a program is registered to be notified of an event last, the event notification facility rejects all other requests from programs to be notified of the same event last, however preferably other programs can still register for notification of the event. Finally, the event notification facility includes a means for notifying each registered program when the event occurs.
