  • Publication number: 20040140585
Abstract: A catheter can be formed from an elongate shaft and a distal tip. The catheter can be formed by flaring a proximal end of the distal tip to form a flared proximal end and positioning the distal tip such that the flared proximal end of the distal tip overlaps a distal end of the outer layer. Heat and pressure are applied to melt and flow together a portion of the outer layer proximate the distal end of the shaft and the overlapped portion of the flared proximal end of the distal tip, thereby forming a joint between the elongate shaft and the distal tip.

  • Publication number: 20040104103
Abstract: The invention relates to a conveying path (1) for articles, in particular for baggage containers, having at least two spaced-apart conveyors (2) which bear the articles, run parallel in the conveying direction (F) and of which at least one has a driven, endlessly circulating conveying belt (5) guided over deflecting wheels (9) and by means of which the articles can be carried away on the top side of the top strand (7), with carrying rollers (4) arranged one behind the other, as seen in the conveying direction (F), between the deflecting wheels (9) in order to support the conveying belt (5). In order to minimize the wear of the conveying belt (5) and carrying roller (4), it is proposed that drive means are provided, and these ensure that, even if the top strand (7) is not resting on the carrying roller (4), the circumferential speed of this carrying roller (4) is equal in each case to the running speed of the conveying belt (5).

  • Publication number: 20030129657
Abstract: The invention relates to the mass-spectrometric determination of the masses of biopolymers or their fragments without the use of internal or external reference substances. The invention consists in replacing each mass measured by the nearest most probable mass for the organic substance or biopolymer measured, whereby an accuracy better than approximately 0.1 mass units is automatically achieved within a mass range up to about 3000 atomic mass units in mass spectrometers which, although capable of stable mass calibration, do not achieve particularly high mass accuracies. In the case of proteins, this accuracy leads to surprising improvements when searching protein-sequence databases.

  • Patent number: 5992364
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine with direct fuel injection, which comprises a number of operating elements each including a combustion chamber delineated by an internal wall of a cylinderhead and a piston movably disposed in a cylinder, an injector mounted in the cylinderhead has a fuel injection nozzle which injects fuel into the combustion chamber in a cone-like pattern wherein an ignitable fuel/air mixture is formed and a spark plug is mounted on the cylinderhead within a spark plug sleeve which extends into the combustion chamber and forms, adjacent the spark plug electrodes, an ignition chamber which is in communication with the interior of the cone-like fuel spray pattern so as to receive therefrom an easily ignitable relatively rich fuel mixture which, upon ignition by the spark plug, generates a flame beam igniting the fuel mixture within the cone-like spray pattern.

  • Patent number: 5938599
Abstract: The position of an object, for example a catheter, in a body to be examined is determined so as to enable monitoring of its movement through the body at the same time that information concerning the anatomy in the surroundings of the object is to be acquired. An as high as possible temporal and spatial resolution should be achieved for this purpose. To this end, the nuclear magnetization in the surrounding region of the object is determined by means of a micro-coil which is mounted on the inserted object, it being possible to determine the position of the object from the nuclear magnetization. Subsequently, an RF coil system is used to perform a line scan around this position in order to determine the nuclear magnetization in a line-shaped region.

  • Patent number: 5773227
Abstract: This invention describes bifunctional polysaccharides conjugated to both a chelating group suitable for the selective complexation of metal cations, and a targeting peptide specific for a cellular substructure. These bifunctional polysaccharides are primarily useful for the regulation, detection and quantification of metal ion levels, such as Ca.sup.2+, Mg.sup.2+, Na.sup.+, K.sup.+, or Li.sup.+, in specific cellular structures. Localization within the cellular structure is accomplished by the targeting peptide, whereupon the large, water-soluble polysaccharide prevents diffusion of the chelating group from the targeted site. When the target cell structure is the nucleus of a fertilized egg cell, the polysaccharide-chelator conjugate remains sequestered within the nucleus until the breakdown of the nuclear envelope, whereupon the reagent becomes sequestered into both daughter nuclei. This means of tracking daughter cells is practical even through several cell divisions.

  • Patent number: 5723218
Abstract: The invention is a novel fluorescently labeled microparticle, where the microparticle internally incorporates at least one dipyrrometheneboron difluoride dye. Appropriate selection of substituents results in dipyrrometheneboron difluoride derivatives that, when incorporated into polymer microparticles, give the desired excitation and emission wavelengths. The spectral characteristics of the labeling dyes in liquid are not greatly changed when the dye is incorporated into the particles, and the spectral excitation and emission wavelengths are compatible with commonly used filter sets. Other embodiments of the fluorescent microparticles include additional dyes and/or bioreactive substances.
