  • Publication number: 20040208449
Abstract: A fiber-optic tunable filter and an intensity modulator respectively includes: a fiber having a polished surface and an evanescent-field; and a photonic crystal having plural cavities and a filler filled therein and attached to the polished surface, wherein the plural cavities and the filler decide a photonic band-gap of the photonic crystal and the photonic band-gap is adjusted to reflect a light with a specific wavelength through the evanescent interaction with the photonic crystal material. Based on the fiber side-polishing technique, all kinds of fiber active and passive devices are able to be manufactured easily, especially for a high speed intensity modulator using an EO (Electro-Optic) polymer as the filler.

  • Publication number: 20040120661
Abstract: A manufacturing apparatus and method of a fiber coupler is provided. A movable electric arc is employed to fuse more than two stacked fibers for manufacturing a fiber coupler having a small size and good environment stability. It is advantageous that the fiber coupler can be used in a SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) communication system, and the method also be used to manufacture the all-fiber CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) multiplexer which covers the E-band wavelengths and the sub-components of the OADM (Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer). And, all these functions are difficult to be achieved by the conventional techniques.

  • Publication number: 20040101249
Abstract: A method for manufacturing an all-fiber device. The method comprises the following steps. First, a recess with a predetermined radius is formed on a semiconductor substrate. A first optical fiber is then fixed in the recess by an adhesive. Subsequently, a cladding layer of the first optical fiber is polished to form a first side-polished optical fiber with a first polished surface near a core region of the first optical fiber. Then, the first optical fiber is separated from the semiconductor substrate by a liquid. Like the first side-polished optical fiber, a second side-polished optical fiber with a second polished surface is formed. Finally, after the first polished surface is aligned and in contact with the second polished surface, the first side-polished optical fiber and the second side-polished optical fiber are fused to form the all-fiber device. A coupling region is formed between the first and second polished surfaces.

  • Publication number: 20040015003
Abstract: A high viscosity liquid is fed into a rotation pack bed at a position with a distance far enough from a rotation axis, creating a centrifugal force exerted on the high viscosity liquid overwhelming a drag thereof, so that it can flow radially through the rotation pack bed. A high pressure gas is introduced into the rotation pack bed peripherally and/or a suction force source is connected to a position near the rotation axis, so that a volatile component contained in the high viscosity fluid is entrained in the gas counter currently flowing through the rotation pack bed and withdrawn from the position near the rotation axis, or the volatile component exits from the position near the rotation axis in gas phase, and thus the volatile component is removed from the high viscosity liquid. A second fluid can also be fed into the rotation pack bed to react with the high viscosity liquid, so that a reaction product is formed, and a volatile side product is removed at the same time.

  • Patent number: 6665473
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a compact fiber coupler. On a semiconductor substrate, a V-groove with a radius curvature R is formed. Then, a glue is positioned at both sides of the V-groove, and the glue is absorbed from both sides of the V-groove by capillarity. A first optical fiber and a second optical fiber are respectively fixed in the V-groove so that the cladding of the first optical fiber and the second optical fiber can be polished to form a first side-polished region and a second side-polished region. Thus, the compact fiber coupler is accomplished by aligning and fusing the first side-polished region and the second side-polished region together, in which a coupling region is formed between the first side-polished region and the second side-polished region.
