  • Publication number: 20130124654
Abstract: The invention pertains to a terminal for exchanging messages by placing tokens near it. The terminal comprises communication means to exchange information with a database, detection means for identifying local tokens placed near the terminal, display means for displaying remote tokens, and proximity logic configured to assert a proximity relationship between tokens or between a token and a reference point. The terminal exchanges information about the topology of its tokens and that of tokens present at other terminals via the database. The terminal displays tokens present near remote copies of the local tokens, based on information obtained from the database.

  • Publication number: 20120310151
Abstract: Embodiments of the present technology include a micromachined implantable drug delivery devices, grippers, and syringes that are wirelessly powered and controlled by frequency tuning of external radiofrequency (RF) magnetic fields. An illustrative device can be designed and constructed with passive circuitry and microvalves that operate without batteries, e.g., through thermal actuation of hydrogel microvalves and/or shape-memory alloy members. The frequency selectivity in the device control provides not only a path to achieving reliable and safe operation of drug delivery but also potential applications for selective delivery of multiple drugs.

  • Patent number: 8315990
Abstract: A new approach for handling stream imperfections based on speculative execution involves the retraction of incorrect events facilitated using operators to remove speculatively produced incorrect output. Additionally, parameters are disclosed that define a spectrum of consistency levels. A first parameter, maximum blocking time, exposes a tradeoff between a degree of speculation and latency. A second parameter, the maximum time data is remembered before being purged from the system, exposes a tradeoff between state size and correctness. Varying these two parameters produces a spectrum of consistency levels (e.g., strong, middle, weak) which address the specific tradeoffs built into other systems. Retraction is accomplished using operators that include Select, AlterLifetime, Join, Sum, Align, and Finalize.

  • Publication number: 20120195367
Abstract: Disclosed are adaptive loop filtering techniques for video encoding and/or decoding. For a video unit, the encoder selects a set of predefined filters or generates a set of new filters, and places into the bitstream information identifying the set of predefined filters, or information defining the set of new filters. The set of filters may be used for loop filtering of at least one of the reconstructed samples of the video unit. At the decoder, a set of filters may be obtained by, decoding an index that identifies a set of predefined filters, or by decoding information related to a set of new filters. The obtained set of filters may be used for loop filtering of at least one decoded and reconstructed sample of the video unit.

  • Publication number: 20120189064
Abstract: Disclosed are adaptive loop filtering techniques in the context of video encoding and/or decoding. For each video unit, the encoder can select a filter shape, and can place into the bitstream information that identifies the filter shape. At least one filter whose shape is the selected filter shape is used to loop filter at least one sample. At the decoder, a filter shape is obtained by decoding information that identifies the filter shape. At least one filter whose shape is the obtained filter shape is used to loop filter at least one reconstructed sample. Different filter shapes are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20120134425
Abstract: Disclosed are techniques for adaptive interpolation filtering of luminance and chrominance samples in the context of motion compensation in video encoding or decoding. A two-dimensional interpolation filter of n×m coefficients may be separable, i.e., it may be separated into two one-dimensional filters with m and n coefficients, respectively. The bitstream may include, per video unit and sub-sample position, information indicating whether to use a newly-generated, a cached, or a default filter that may be a separable two-dimensional filter. The information may be structured in a way that takes advantage of the two-dimensional filter being separable. When a newly-generated filter is signalled, the bitstream may contain information pertaining to the characteristics of the newly-generated filter, such as its coefficients. A decoder may fetch this information from the bitstream to create the filters which are applied to samples of the video unit. An encoder may create a bitstream as described.

  • Publication number: 20110296922
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and system for monitoring the integrity of thick section welds during the welding process with electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMAT). Using induction coils in properly arranged and oriented magnetic fields, EMATs can generate shear horizontally polarized (SH) skimming waves in the base metal adjacent to the weld. A through transmission method is adopted where by a transmitting EMAT is used to generate SH skimming waves on side of the weld while a receiving EMAT is used to sense and assess the ultrasonic signal acquired by a receiver EMAT on the other side of the weld there by indicating the quality of the most recent weld layer applied by the welder.
