  • Publication number: 20160075441
Abstract: A device, system, and method for facilitating aerial refueling. The device is a navigable flying unit for more precise positioning to establish a fuel-transmitting connection with a fuel inlet of a fuel-receiving plane (including a fuel inlet located on the wing of a commercial aircraft). The device comprises controllable aerodynamic surfaces for mid-air maneuvering while attached to a fuel-transmitting medium being trailed by a fuel-giving plane. The navigable unit may also comprise a means for, if necessary, moving along a surface of the fuel-receiving plane for more precise positioning, and a means for attaching to the surface of the fuel-receiving plane and/or a fuel port thereof, as well as a means for coupling with the fuel inlet in order to establish a fuel-transmitting connection. The in-air maneuvering of the device and fuel-transmitting medium may be facilitated in one embodiment, by the fuel-transmitting medium comprising aerodynamic surfaces configured for reducing drag.

  • Publication number: 20160048307
Abstract: Various techniques for dynamic localization of a client device are disclosed. In an example embodiment, a geographic location associated with a client device is determined, along with a localized language requirement associated with a geographic location. When content is received at the client device for presentation on a display, a set of definitions defining elements of a user interface are accessed. The definitions are used to resize elements to be displayed based on the content and the localized language requirement. Various additional embodiments access definitions and manage the dynamic localization in different ways.

  • Publication number: 20160040528
Abstract: A tapered magnetorheological (MR) valve includes a first fixed housing that remains in a fixed position along a central axis of the tapered MR valve. The first fixed housing defines a first surface of a MR fluid channel that is at an angle with respect to the central axis of the tapered MR valve. A second housing moves linearly along the central axis of the tapered MR valve. The second housing defines a second surface of the MR fluid channel that is at the angle with respect to the central axis of the tapered MR valve. The first fixed housing and the second housing together define a first MR fluid chamber and a second MR fluid chamber interconnected by the MR fluid channel. The second housing moves linearly between a first position and a second position along the central axis of the tapered MR valve.

  • Publication number: 20150301101
Abstract: The adaptive phasor measurement unit (PMU)-based series-compensated line (SCL) fault location method uses three different sets of pre-fault voltage and current phasor measurements at both terminals of the SCL. The three sets of local PMU measurements at each terminal are used for online calculation of a respective Thevenin Equivalent (TE). This enables representation of the power system pre-fault network with a reduced two-terminal equivalent system. The PMU measurements are also utilized for online calculation of the SCL parameters. This non-iterative method does not need knowledge of a time elapsed for the wave propagation from a fault point to a sending end and a receiving end. Two subroutines SA and SB are used for locating faults. A selection procedure is applied for indicating the valid subroutine and, hence, the actual fault location.

  • Publication number: 20150264564
Abstract: A capability for providing access control for a geo-fenced service (GFS) is presented herein. In general, a GFS is a network-hosted service having associated therewith a spatial region within which the network-hosted service may be accessed. The spatial region of the GFS may be defined based on one or more witnesses co-located at a location of the spatial region within which the GFS may be accessed, which are associated with the GFS in order to support access control for the GFS. The capability for providing access control for the GFS, based on a request by a user device to access the GFS, uses one or more co-located witnesses associated with the GFS to verify the presence of the user device within the spatial region within which the GFS may be accessed before granting access by the user device to the GFS.

  • Publication number: 20150232635
Abstract: A thermoplastic sulfur-polymer composite comprises a thermoplastic polymer, such as polyethylene and polystyrene; and a sulfur element. Such sulfur element functions as passive sulfur filler in this composite. The thermoplastic polymer is a polymer matrix; and the sulfur filler is dispersed in the polymer matrix. There is no chemical reaction occurs after the addition of the sulfur filler into the host polymer and no chemical bond formed between the polymer and the sulfur filler. The thermoplastic sulfur-polymer composite can be a nanocomposite by either adding certain nanofillers into the composite or making the sulfur filler as sulfur nanoparticles. With its similar physical properties and lower manufacturing costs, the thermoplastic sulfur-polymer composites are good alternatives of the respective pure polymers.

  • Patent number: 9045810
Abstract: A method for melting steel in an electric arc furnace (EAF). A hot heel is provided in the EAF. Metal scrap is loaded into the EAF. The metal scrap is melted in the EAF. The mass of the hot heel in relation to the mass of the metal scrap that is initially beyond the surface of the hot heel is a certain minimum. This minimum is 0.75 times the relation between the heat required to melt the metal scrap beyond the surface of the hot heel and the heat that can be taken from the hot heel without it being solidified when a theoretical heat balance calculation is applied as defined in a formula.
