  • Publication number: 20160248169
Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatuses are described for wireless communication using the mmW spectrum. In particular, antenna structures may include arrays of antenna elements to deal with line-of-sight issues. Further, antenna structures may be configured to produce a beam (e.g., signal) that is relatively narrow and has a relatively high gain to deal with losses, such as mentioned above. Still further, antenna structures may be configured to provide beam steering (e.g., beamforming) capability. Such antenna structures may be designed to be relatively compact to deal with the limited real estate available on modern wireless communication devices (e.g., cellular telephones).

  • Publication number: 20160226253
Abstract: The neuro-fuzzy control system for a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system includes an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) implemented in real time. Independent active and reactive P-Q power control transfers the generated power to the grid using a voltage source inverter (VSI). The PV system includes a PV module, a buck converter, a VSI, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller for the buck converter, and a VSI controller. The MPPT controller uses irradiation and temperature as inputs. A five-layer ANFIS processes these inputs and provides a control reference voltage as input to a PI controller connected to the buck converter to maintain the output voltage of the photovoltaic array with respect to the control reference voltage.

  • Patent number: 9365525
Abstract: An organosolv process for producing bio-products by decomposing lignocellulosic materials comprises providing an initial lignin solvent with water, an acid, and a lignin dissolving chemical comprising at least one of an organic ester, butyl acetate, an organic furan, and furfural. The process also includes placing the lignin solvent in contact with a biomass to form a circulation solvent, and recycling at least a portion of the circulation solvent by circulating the circulation solvent back into contact with the biomass. The circulating of the circulation solvent occurs for a period of time, after which, the process then includes separating material such as chemicals and lignin from the circulation solvent. The chemicals can be recycled as new solvent or sold while lignin can be used as natural and renewable colorant for polymers such as poly lactic acid.

  • Patent number: 9347321
Abstract: Methods for balancing rotating machinery, such as gas turbine engines, to minimize vibrations. An optimal engine balance solution is obtained using a hybrid optimization technique based on vibration data from one or more vibration sensors and corresponding influence coefficients which quantify the change in vibration level at the vibration sensors due to a unit increase in unbalance level at unbalance source locations. More specifically, balance weight and angular position are determined based on multiple optimization methods which concurrently process the vibration data, the multiple optimization methods comprising local and global optimization algorithms.

  • Publication number: 20160140449
Abstract: The fuzzy linear programming method for optimizing charging schedules in unidirectional vehicle-to-grid systems is a computerized fuzzy linear programming method for an electric vehicle (EV) aggregator that coordinates the provision of ancillary services, such as regulation and spinning reserves, to electricity markets using unidirectional vehicle-to-grid (V2G). The fuzzy optimization incorporates uncertainties while maintaining the tractability of the problem size since, in fuzzy optimization, there is no need to represent each stochastic parameter by a number of scenarios. This allows for optimizing the charging of all EVs simultaneously, as well as taking market aspects into account, guaranteeing maximization of aggregator profits, and further considering electricity market uncertainties, such as ancillary service prices and ancillary service deployment signals.

  • Publication number: 20160116522
Abstract: The fully adaptive fault location method is based on synchronized phasor measurements obtained by Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). The method utilizes only PMU synchronized measurements and does not require any data to be provided by the electric utility. Line parameters for each section of the line and Thevenin's equivalents (TEs) of the system at each of three terminals are determined online, utilizing three independent sets of pre-fault PMU measurements. This ensures that the actual operating conditions of the system are adequately considered. Simulation results show that the present method is capable of producing reliable and very accurate solutions.

  • Publication number: 20160063659
Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a housing such as a metal housing in which a display is mounted. Control circuitry in the electronic device such as a system-on-chip integrated circuit may produce image data. A display driver integrated circuit may receive the image data from the system-on-chip integrated circuit and may display the image data on the display. In the absence of electrostatic discharge, the display driver integrated circuit may operate normally and may generate a heartbeat signal. When disrupted due to electrostatic discharge, the display driver circuitry may cease production of the heartbeat signal. The system-on-chip integrated circuit can implement a watchdog timer. If the watchdog timer times out because the heartbeat signal is not received within a timeout period, the system-on-chip integrated circuit may reset the display.
