  • Publication number: 20210014667
Abstract: A user equipment (UE) includes first and second subscriber identity modules (SIMs), possibly subscribed to different carriers. When the first SIM is in a connected state and the second SIM is in an idle state, the UE may need to periodically tune away a radio from a first frequency used for communication under the first SIM to a second frequency used for idle mode activity under the second SIM. The UE may provide to the network of the first SIM the second SIMs traffic activity pattern and/or serving frequency so that the network may provide coordinated configuration and/or scheduling for the UE device, e.g., in order to make the action of tuning away (and tuning back) the radio more efficient and/or to decrease the network impact of such radio tune aways (e.g., to decrease wasted uplink scheduling and wasted downlink transmissions for the first SIM).

  • Publication number: 20210014934
Abstract: Devices and associated methods for operating a dual-subscriber identity module (SIM) dual-standby (DSDS) user equipment device (UE) configured with a first SIM and a second SIM. The UE performs communications with a first cellular network using the first SIM and a first radio resource control (RRC) connection, and receives a request to perform a higher priority communication using the second SIM. In response to the request to perform the higher priority communication, the UE transmits a request to the first network to suspend the first RRC connection. After transmission of the request to suspend the first RRC connection, the UE receives a message from the first network to place the first RRC connection in an inactive state, and initiates a timer, wherein the timer is used to determine whether the first RRC connection remains in the inactive state or transitions to an idle state.

  • Publication number: 20200389828
Abstract: Apparatuses, systems, and methods for a user equipment device (UE) to establish a connection with a core network through a base station configured with mixed core network deployment, wherein the base station is communicatively coupled to each of a LTE core network (CN) such as an evolved packet core (EPC) and a 5G CN. The UE determines a preference for establishing a connection with one of the EPC or the 5G CN based on one or more of a device type of the UE, an active data flow running on the UE, an availability of network slices or packet data unit (PDU) sessions through each core network, or historical network performance of a particular CN. The UE transmits a message to the base station indicating the determined preference. The UE subsequently receives a response from the base station establishing a connection with the indicated preferred core network.

  • Patent number: 10848996
Abstract: A device wirelessly communicating over a wireless network may adjust a threshold from a network-configured value to a new value in response to a performance characteristic of an application executing on the device not meeting a specified metric, for example in response to the application experiencing a latency greater than a specified latency value. The threshold may be associated with a measurement event configured by the wireless network, and the device may use the new value for the threshold when performing measurements on wireless channel conditions of the wireless network. When adjusting the threshold, the device may adjust the threshold once per application session of the application, and/or once per current radio resource control (RRC) connection before the wireless network releases the current RRC connection. Furthermore, the device may adjust the threshold only if the network-configured value associated with the measurement event is greater than a specified threshold value.

  • Patent number: 10827300
Abstract: Techniques are provided to initiate signal transmissions for possible opportunistic reception by a mobile device, and/or to initiate opportunistic reception of signal transmissions for use in mobile device position location estimation. For example, a mobile device may use assistance data to identify a first signal to be transmitted over a first frequency band and a second signal to be transmitted over a second frequency band during a specific period of time. At least a portion of the second frequency band may be outside of the first frequency band. The mobile device subsequently attempts to opportunistically receive at least the first signal and the second signal via a receiver tuned to a reception frequency band that encompasses at least the first frequency band and the second frequency band. The mobile device may then process the opportunistically received signals to obtain measurements corresponding to at least the first and second signals.

  • Publication number: 20200304984
Abstract: Apparatuses, systems, and methods for a dual subscriber identity module (SIM) dual standby (DSDS) capable user equipment (UE) devices to perform data operations with a first SIM that is not capable of or preferred for packet switched (PS) services and a second SIM that is capable of or preferred for PS services. A timer may be initiated upon radio frequency (RF) chain handover from the first SIM to the second SIM, whereupon a first connection associated with the first SIM is maintained in an idle state while the timer is running. Upon expiration of the timer, the UE may determine whether to send a scheduling request to maintain or release the first connection. The timer may be utilized when a call is dropped over the first connection, to increase the likelihood of successfully receiving a callback. The timer may be shortened in duration to reduce reception of spam messaging.

  • Publication number: 20200288531
Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques to enable enhanced machine type communication (s) (eMTC) and/or narrowband Internet-of-Things (NB-IoT) devices to transition to idle mode after releasing a connection, such as a radio resource control (RRC) connection, more quickly than with previously known techniques. An example method includes determining, based on an indication received in a narrowband signal on a narrowband region of a bandwidth comprising a plurality of narrowband regions, whether to wait for a delay period, determined based on a configuration received from a network entity, before releasing a radio resource control (RRC) connection and releasing the RRC connection at a time in accordance with the determination.

  • Publication number: 20200187189
Abstract: Capability exchange enhancements include filtering and/or indexing. In some aspects, a user equipment (UE) determines UE capabilities to be reported to a network based on one or more of: one or more enquiries from the network, received system information, a home operator policy, configuration associated with public land mobile network (PLMN) information of one or more networks, a user preference, or a service type. In other aspects, a UE may report a subset of UE capabilities for features used for the connection establishment. Following connection establishment, the UE may use an identifier to communicate a more complete set of modes of operation that the UE is currently capable of performing. Base stations of the network may share the reported subset so that the UE may avoid transmitting the subset to a target base station.
