  • Patent number: 8267839
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for resistance stretching and strengthening of the muscles of the lower leg of a human user. The device and method provide a lever arm for hinging the foot about the ankle joint for providing resistance first against a series of concentric, and preferably but optionally, isometric contractions of the muscles of the lower leg sufficient to fatigue at least one of the muscles, and then for applying force sufficient to oppose and overcome the opposite force of the user to perform an eccentric contraction of the muscles. The device includes an elongated portion that acts as a lever arm for hinging the foot about the ankle joint and a fastening means for securing the foot against the top surface of the elongated portion and allowing for manipulation of the foot to assist in the performance of the various contractions of the muscles of the lower leg.

  • Publication number: 20120081394
Abstract: A method of image augmentation for an image of a book includes capturing an image of the book, detecting at least a portion of at least one fiduciary marker of the book within the image, estimating placement of the book's spine based upon the detected portion of the fiduciary marker, hypothesising possible positions for edges of a rigid leaf being turned in the book based upon estimated placement of the spine, processing the book image to identify edges within the image, comparing elements of the identified edges with the hypothesised positions for edges of the rigid leaf, selecting one of the hypothesised positions that best coincides with the compared elements of the processed image as representative of the position of the rigid leaf being turned in the book, and augmenting the book image with a virtual graphic element arranged in accordance with the selected representative position of the rigid leaf.

  • Patent number: 8148180
Abstract: A method of forming ohmic contacts on a light emitting diode that features a surface treatment of a substrate includes exposing a surface of a p-type gallium nitride layer to an acid-containing solution and a buffered oxide etch process. A quantum well is formed in a gallium nitride substrate and a layer of p-type gallium nitride is deposited over the quantum well. The surface of the p-type gallium nitride is exposed to an acid-containing solution and then a buffered oxide etch process is performed to provide an etched surface. A metal stack including a layer of silver disposed between layers of platinum is then deposited.

  • Patent number: 8093872
Abstract: This invention relates to a method for Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) a photovoltaic cell by a power converter that provides an output current at voltages useful to operate electronics or charge batteries. This invention also relates to a method for Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) multiple photovoltaic cells by a power combiner that combines the output of the multiple photovoltaic cells into a single output. The power combiner is comprised of multiple power converters, one for each photovoltaic cell. Each power converter used in these methods has an input-regulating element that has an output wave form with a characteristic that is related to the photovoltaic cell voltage and current. As a result only the photovoltaic cell voltage is directly measured in these methods and the photovoltaic cell current is determined indirectly.

  • Publication number: 20110297091
Abstract: A feeding mechanism for animals, particularly pets, comprises a scanner, microchip and means for regulation and provision of food. An animal identification means scans animal identification implants for an identification signal indicative of an animal. When an authorised animal is identified a storage hopper is activated to dispense a predetermined amount of animal feed into a bowl for the animal, when an unauthorised animal is detected close to the feed or the bowl, a repellent, such as a puff of gas, squirt of water, loud noise or other sudden stimulus or shock is generated, so as to frighten off the unauthorised (intruder) animal. In an alternative embodiment the invention also includes an exercise device, which has a projector arranged to shine an image at random over a given area. A sensing means determines how effective an animal is at the device and a score calculated. Upon reaching a given score the animal is rewarded with a treat, which may be food.
